The people who are really worried about radiation are the Chinese who live right across the border. Not that the Chinese government seems to listen to the people all that well - though you could say the same about Japan's government and Fukushima.
If China had taken the lead in moderating NK's nuclear weapons development and testing, this could have been avoided. But you can't un-ring the bell. My feeling is that the physical situation is unstable. It's only a matter of time before the roof collapses and radiation is released, unless something can be done to stabilize the site. But even if there was a fix that could be jiggered, I don't think NK has the equipment and expertise to do it. Someone - perhaps China, or Russia, or both - is going to have to help out.

I don't quite get the picture, but it sounds bad* for NK, and
the timing with Trump's Asia visit is interesting-coincidental.

So, the only thing that all of this bluster, sanctions, and steaming up and down the coast of N Korea did was convince KJU to develop his weapons faster.
I don't know if I posted about this or just thought about posting about it, but the last missile test send the missile up 4500 km. If aimed for maximum distance, it could reach the USA, including Wash DC. But what I thought was interesting was that they aimed it into the exclusive economic zone of Japan. I could be wrong, but when you shoot up into the air like that, I feel that there's a bit of I shot an arrow into the air ... and that your targeting needs to be pretty good if you don't want to accidentally hit anything!
Also, why weren't those USA-THAAD missiles launched to intercept the test missile? (HINT: It would not be good to be seen to fail.)
According to the experts, NK has everything it needs to make a nuclear ICBM. According to experts N Korea only wants a few things:
To be negotiated with as an equal. (Gee, that's simple!)
To reach a peace deal. (Korea is not at "peace", only a cessation of hostilities)
So with all that, the best action for the USA might be to change direction.
