Jo, how did it get so bad that Hillary Clinton losing - to Donald Trump of all people - was even a possibility?
On the face of it, Clinton should have been able to win against Trump without even campaigning. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but not that far off the mark. OBVIOUSLY there was a MAJOR miscalculation about Clinton's actual standing across the country.
What signals were being missed? What misperceptions went unnoticed?
Hillary eroded her own chances with the piling on of lies on top of evasions on top of manipulations, including her private unsecured email server AND the scrubbed supposedly private files AND the shifting stories she used to explain it all, the Goldman Sachs speeches AND the fact that she wouldn't make the contents public, the way she and the DNC preassigned delegates AND manipulated the debate schedule AND fraudulently manipulated delegate votes because of entrenched bias (proven by DNC emails), the constant presence of The Clinton Foundation AND its shady benefactors ... even Bill's little stunt visiting Lynch in her plane ...
... But then, she also ran as the candidate of more of the same. Her historic support for 'free' trade agreements and her non-recognition of how severely wage earners were hurting garnered some antipathy and moved other potential supporters to non-voting or third party status. (Her non-recognition of how STRONG a primary opponent Sanders was, and why that was so, was a fatal blind spot, imo.)
Each one of these things cost her a few percentage points here and there, over a multitude of states - and before you know it, you're talking real numbers.
Hillary incrementally moved herself from 'winner' to 'marginal' column, over time. By that time she was ready for a fall, and by focusing on Hillary's well-known weaknesses, Trump took her down. And yes, it was close. It could have gone the other way. But it wouldn't have even been possible without Hillary REPEATEDLY, PERSISTENTLY undermining herself regarding a wide range of topics.
