When the Devil Drives - Chapter One

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

Post-Serenity, things are getting tougher for smugglers to make a honest day's wage. Seems the Alliance is a mite peeved, for some reason...

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 4272    RATING: 9.0 (PG13)    SERIES: FIREFLY

This, if all goes well, will be a Serenity novel. It will, in fact, be the one I plotted out before I got sidetracked by my http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=8597>"Visit to a Weird 'Verse, Re-revisited" idea, but I'm all better now.

This takes place immediately after the BDM. Rated PG-13 for adult situations and language, no explicitness unless things get out of hand. Comments welcome.

Firefly, Serenity, and the characters and situations contained are the property of Mutant Enemy, Twentieth Century Fox, and Joss Whedon, and no claim against their intellectual property is being made. Honest.

"When the Devil Drives"

Prologue

The planets and the moons and the spaces in between hereabouts have been pretty well mapped out these days, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy to find things. Especially things that strive not to be found.

In a plain room behind an unmarked door, on a ship with no markings, transponder, or official existence, in a desolate area of space so far from respectable folks it may as well not exist, a small group of men were discussing the fate of the universe and their preferred place in it, which was prominent.

“I still don’t see why we can’t just bust in there. We got the surprise thing going for us, and if your boys know what they’re talkin’ about we got enough firepower to wake up God. Why sneak about?”

“Because we can’t be seen as the attackers, my friend. Public opinion will win this war, not anything we can blow up. We must be accepted, demanded, not feared. Recent events have already shaken the people’s trust, there will never be a better opening.”

“Could blow up something little...”

“All in good time, lao pung yo.”

“People get to callin’ me ‘friend’ I start watching their hands,” the first voice said. “Usually means either something I like’s about to go missin’ or something I don’t want to see is gonna show up.”

A third voice laughed. “Wise, very wise. We are not friends here, me le

An absolute gem! Excellent characterization from *all* the crew. Can't wait to read more. ;)

Oh, dear God! I don't know whether to laugh 'til I cry, or cry 'til I laugh. Here I thought I'd have a chance to recover my equilibrium after losing it to that wonderfully insane opus of opposite identities. Now you've gone and written yet *another* story that is guaranteed to earn me odd looks and edgy movements from other people who happen to be in a room with me while I read your downright side-splitting stuff.

I LOVE IT! ;)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Mal Reynolds is physically incapable of *not* being a smart-ass. Doesn't matter if he's about two seconds from getting his head blown off (actually, *especially* when he's about two seconds from getting his head blown off), he has to go and spout off a pithy comment that all but ensures that two seconds will become zero seconds. But hey, that's what we love about him.

River. Was. Brilliant! There's Mal, dangling in the air like a side of beef (or beefcake, but never mind...) and she tackles his legs and calls him Daddy. (That was actually more than a bit creepifying, but it got the job done.) And putting on that teary-eyed show for the snitty government goon was an incredible masterstroke. A cold, calculating, and utterly remorseless masterstroke, but an incredible one, nonetheless.

And you say this will hopefully be a novel? THANK YOU! I have rarely (read: once or twice before) encountered an author (of *any* kind) who has made me laugh as hard as you have. I bow to your comic genius. Keep it up! :)

This was just excellent. River's part in the first scene, calling Mal daddy and his reaction, all just so perfect.

And since it takes place after BDM, there'll be some fun S/K moments too, I hope.

I'll be looking forward to reading more.

Wow, this is an incredible start to what proves to be another great story from you. I loved River. I can just see her putting a performance like that, and I can just see it hurting her. And I loved Mal and Zoe's interaction. God, I love these characters and you breathe life into them. Thank you.

Once again, you've nailed everyone. This was fabulous! More soon, please!

And have you considered doing each of the actors as their characters, like Nathan? I loved that series!!!!

"I don't want to do dishes tonight."

BWAHAHAHAHAH!

Reminds me of Bruce Willis' line: "None of us want to pay taxes again--ever."

This was brilliant and I could *so* see River pulling off this performance. Absolutely wonderful, shiny stuff. Ali D :~)

I could go on and on forever about how incredibly good this was, but there honestly aren't enough words and my fingers would get tired and fall off from so much typing. Major kudos!

Hi!

This is really good stuff! I just wanted to take a moment and say that and to let you know about our new podcast, "Tales from the 'Verse"... It's going to be, at it's heart, readings of fanfics. Go over to http://www.talesfromtheverse.com/index.shtml to check out the particulars. There's also information on how to submit stories. I hope you do.

Thanks!

Fantastic! What a killer way to start a new series, too. The dialogue was all spot-on and, as someone pointed out, Mal's completely incapable of *not* being a smartass, even if it means sooner death.

I love that River saved the day. I loved *how* she saved the day. I adore Zoe's last line. This is already such a fun ride.

I loved River's little girl act so much I LOL so loud that my husband had to turn up the volume on the TV.

I thought her comment about not wanting to do the dishes tonight was hysterical.

Brilliant. Can't wait for the next shiny chapter.

Yep...another series has entered the BSR with all kinds of aplomb and more of my free time has gone up in smoke from wanting to read it;)

Damn...now this is some excellent stuff right here. Creepy opening gambit and hilarious first scene with the BDHs:)

River...oh how your antics both amuse and amaze me. I can just imagine both Summer's and Nathan's faces during this scenes, especially when River's head is at Mal's beltline (evil I know):D

And now I'm just embarrassed, cuz I posted an older version that was missing half of the friggin' text. It's updated, with the rest added back in. Grumble, grumble, grumble...

I mean... here's a treat! More words!

I stumbled across this one again and noticed your post about having not posted part of the chapter and I went to eagerly read what I'd missed. An advice: when you post the next chapter (soon, yes, please please please?? *doe-eyed look*), mention that the first chapter has a few more words... those who probably read this when you first posted it will not think to check back for more.

Okay, now for a little comment on the rest of the chapter that I missed on the first reading. I love, love, this sentence "That was the great thing about having professionally violent crew, they could handle the menacing part and let him do the wiseass stuff. Division of labor." It's just so... Mal! LOL.

Noted this while reading: "...settled on Jayne, who was technically he was smiling".

And wow, this little extra on the chapter makes this chapter so much better (and longer!) and gives us all a look at a Post-Miranda Broadcast universe, where the Alliance is not forgiving. This is a great start for a novel, no doubt about it, and everyone was just so in-character. Mal especially... I just love him. :)

Looking forward to reading more so... keep on writing!

From a rabid fan... :o)

Wow. Well..good luck with the novel thing. Your writing is amazing. And you bring the crew to life with every word. I find it hilarious how Simon's always absent when guns're gettin pointed at bodies 'n whatnot
