I changed my mind, there will actually be 19 chapters. (It’s about how to cut it up, not a matter of content.) I’ll still try to get through them by Friday.
Cheers!

Doughnuts being lobbed at you even as we speak!
Excellent chapter.

Oh man, you have me in tears this time. The pain of Mal facing his weaknesses, of not being in control, then the goodness of reconciling with Book, the conversation with Zoe.
And - yay- I did the happy dance when Zoe pulled out the bag, because I knew it, and it made me so happy! This continues to be a wonderful story, thanks so much, and kudos to your betas.

Ohh I bow to your genius,
this is an awesome creation that should go down in fan-fic history.
I can't wait for the next installment, but as much as I can't wait I don't want it to end.
You are so talented m4p

No wonder sales for Apple Grenades has dipped! People have figured out my cunning plan. I wonder if I can stick grenades into strawberries...
The story is even better the second time round! :D

Well that was fine!! Why is it I always feel like I have been a good girl and I am getting a present when I read one of your installments?
I have a question (warning - might be nit-picky) about one phrase. When Zoe is speaking to Mal about not being pregnant, she says "We ain't agreed on it yet" followed by "I am not leavin' this ship." Did you have her not say "ain't" the second time to make the statement is more emphatic? It just reads a tad inconsistent.
That out of the way.... - WOW - I loved dinner with Mad Mal. In the series and movie, I thought those communal dining scenes were very strong and you really caught the flavor (okay, bad pun) of the mealtime gathering. The transitions were excellent. I particularly liked that Mal could not shoot his gun.
Thanks so much for sharing your work with all of us!

Yes on the emphatic - I saw it as being "I am NOT leavin' ..."
hmm, maybe I'll edit.

Brilliant story, but wow do I want to weep for what Mal is going through and River is just amazing in this, understanding with such keen insight and certitude and doing her best to try to anchor what little sanity the Captain has left to ship and crew. I surely hope he will turn the corner soon and his crew can then help him back along that rocky road. Fabulous work, I am in awe. Ali D :~)

Good job!
It's nice to see Mal fighting his crazies. It seems like a very logical progression. He knows what's up now, but he's having problems dealing with it. And River's still helping. And the rest of the crew are trying, if not necessarily succeeding in helping. People are always uncomfortable around crazy people, and people who've just had something bad happen to them.
Anyway, to wrap up the ramble, I thought this was cool. Hope to see the next bit soon!

Absolutely phenomenal stuff! Your ability to shift from delusion to reality doesn't leave the reader behind at all. I'm completely able to keep up with you no matter whether Mal's sane or not. Beautifully done!
Mal's struggle to reconcile what is real with what is not is painfully poignant, and I can't tell you how much it makes my heart hurt to think of him, all alone in his bunk with his pain and fear, trying to face it alone.
I'm surprised at Simon's willingness to trust River so completely without skepticism, but based on that acceptance, I see a tremendous opportunity for healing for River in her helping Mal.
I love how River's become Mal's anchor, and that he accepts comfort from her (her wiping the sweat from his forehead) without realizing it.
It makes me ache to think how well she understands what Mal is going through and how she yearns to help him, but knows she can't - at least not yet (I hope *g*).
Book's ability to cut through Mal's pain by pointing out that none of it truly was done by the crew was well timed, and I loved the well described moment of Mal accepting his hand up in assistance. Healing! Yeay! ;-)
It was wonderful to see Zoe in action in her new effort to reach out to Mal, even if she had to struggle with her normal tendencies to walk away and allow him his privacy. Thank goodness she was able to see quickly what Mal's issues with her were, and cut to the chase and reassure him. Go Zoe! *g*
Poor Kaylee! I can't help but think she's right that Mal shouldn't be alone facing all of this. I must say I bow to your capacity to torture Mal. Wow!
As for Inara, I really feel bad for her. She has no idea how much hurt she's going to get directed at her, and she's just sincerely glad to have him back. I don't envy her the upcoming conversations she'll be having with Mal, especially with his capacity to wound her. Yikes.
All in all, fantastic stuff. I'm a total addict, and am completely and utterly hooked on this fic!!! Thank you for a marvelous piece of work! I can't wait for the next intallment!

That was me gushing previously. I forgot to mention how much I love that through all that's happened, Simon is getting a tremendous amount of insight into his sister, and more specifically just how much of his sister's ramblings *aren't*. Okay. I'll quit now. Thanks again!

The thing I like the most is the 'voice' of your characters. I've seen the episodes enough (too much some might say) that I can 'hear' each character in your writing. It is very visual in my mind and I can 'watch' the episode unfold. It takes no effort at all to fall into this and it almost suprises me to realize that I'm reading it and not actually watching it. Funny that.

I'm really enjoying the way you've been playing with ontology in this series (what is reality?).
Do you read Philip K. Dick, or are you influenced by the people he influenced (like the Matrix)?
Thanks for writing thought provoking stories while still staying true to the characters.

Damn and damn again. I was expecting a wind-down, but you just keep coming with your lovely Mal-angst.
Favorite lines this time:
“Because if you were, or you were trying, and, say, you wanted to leave the ship, I would understand.”
“That’s very… understanding of you, Captain.”
How you manage to balance humor and the grimmest of psychological characterization is just blowing me away. And doing it all so quickly, while apparently actually doing a job you are paid for somewhere. . . .
I say, mal4prez for prez!
Can't wait for the final installments, except then it will be over and that will suck.

Everybody said all the things I wanted to say.
Still .... wonderful chapter. I liked how the crew were trying to cope with something they don't quiet understand.
I love how Mal makes the model ship to calm himself down.

This is great. Disturbing but great.
I especially like how you've continued to use River throughout the chapters. In this chapter particularly I love the interaction between Simon and River at the end. Really well written - not overdone.

This was definately the most intense chapter. I liked how River was the only one to reflect Mal's sanity in the midst of his hallucinations. I was also struck by Mal's immediate willingness to eliminate himself as a threat to others. Excellent.

*the options they had for dinner didn’t help: brown gunk and green gunk*
-Mmmmm, protein.
“Sarge! Stand down! Sarge!”
-Good quick Zoe thinking.
“I guess you’re prepared for the dreaded bunk siege, sir.”
-BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!
You have written Mal's demetia very well here, and I know his road to recovery will be a long one.
