River glided up the stairs to her new bunk in the crew quarters, where she had been moved after proving to the captain that she could effectively pilot the ship. Granted, she couldn’t do it with the style and verve that Hoban Washburn had, but her technical precision was spot on. Piloting a space vessel had been to Wash what dancing was to her, a physical expression of the soul. The combination of her enhanced psychic abilities and knowledge came close, but she was still trying to get a sense of the “Love” that Mal had spoken of. In a way, she did love the ship. She understood the ship. They were alike, she and Serenity. They were both machines, of a sort. They had both been “tinkered” with, although Kaylees’ repairs of Serenity had been done with love, at times being the only thing to keep the majestic, yet quirky ship in the sky.

The so called improvements on River had been done with a clinical eye to enhance her beyond humanity. Her emotional filters had been ripped away to sharpen her natural psychic abilities. Her mind had been broken so that they could fit the pieces back together in a different configuration, rearranging the data to be more efficient for their purposes. There were moments in time when she hated Simon for rescuing her when he did, before they could complete the rebuild, before they could return some form of order to her mind. Those flashes passed in microseconds because, even as fractured as she still was, she understood that any order, any control that she would have had was someone else’s.

With a sigh, she thought, “Another cycle passed.” She no longer thought in days, as planetary rotation around a solar body was no longer an accurate way to express the passing of time. Serenity’s cycle was just over 24 hours long, 1456 minutes. None of her shipmates had noticed the sixteen minutes she had added to the time spent during their sleep cycle. The change had gone unnoticed because they had to adjust to the current local time on every plant or moon that they landed on, but

Sam, you haven't let me down. This is wonderful, so full of River calculating statistics, formulating plots upon plots, much like a human mentat from Dune. She is well-played here, well thought out. Loved the whole thing. Fave line: "Piloting a space vessel had been to Wash what dancing was to her, a physical expression of the soul." Nice tribute to Wash, and apt expression of how River feels about the job.

I can't wait to see how River handles Jayne and his feelings for her.

Proud that you say I'm your muse, samafin. 'Tis an honor.

Please keep these parts coming, love. We need more writers like you, but since those are few and far between, we need more parts from you!

I really loved this, especially the way River is looking after the crew's mental welfare while Simon looks after the physical and her determination to make sure the crew include Jayne into the family is wonderful. Ali D :~)

awwww!!! you have me sniffling here sam!: "Piloting a space vessel had been to Wash what dancing was to her, a physical expression of the soul." i miss my wash!! and that line is so eloquent.

wow, love the whole explanation bout river's brain and mind and what happened to her.

oooooo@ "it had increased the stamina by twenty three percent. It had also reduced the number of arguments by nine and a half percent." love how you had her do the calculations and stuff,

awww @ river wanting jayne to feel all good and part of the family again. can't WAIT ot see how that plays out!!! :P

you really understand river. this is good characterzation although, i think maybe a little TOO calculative, there needs to be some fun there deep down, some childlike thing, cause she still is one. and it kind of makes river seem kind of machine like.

but good writing! love your way with words and i can't wait to see where this goes! this is totally a 10! keep flying!

Well you definitly have my attention, I so want to read more of this. Rayne(River/Jayne is my absolute favorite pairing, with Mayne<Mal/Jayne) right behind it. And this promises to be a very good fic indeed. Plus the writing is great!

wow, interesting. not much of a rayne shipper but this reads as more than plausible! the tie in to the 'hero' shot of the movie (in part 1) was wonderful, and so Jayne.

very enjoyable to read. can't wait for more!

Hey!
SameErtia here. Too tired to log in. But I wanted to say how much I enjoyed this, and the first piece too. Do you have more planned? Or do we have to imagine the rest?

I will be writing more on this as I have time, but probably not until later in the week.

I have some ideas percolating about where to take things.

I actually wrote this thanks to my muse, ItsaWash, during a time that I was supposed to be writing a ten page psych paper, a four to six page english paper, and doing two stats assignments...what can I say, when the muse calls, you answer.

I *knew* there was going to be more! *bounce, bounce, bouce*

"She felt an indefinable emotion wash over her, a tangled mix, like a wild amusement park ride, flashes of lust, anger, resentment, worship, desperation, wanting."

WONDERFUL imagery. *sigh*

Rayne-fics can't help but be frought with turmoil and emotional upheaval, and equating what she felt to a roller coaster is the MOST PERFECT symbolism, ever.

(and I must remember to bookmark this, 'cause that little bit was quite inspiring--and I am a FIRM believer in giving credit where its due!)

Loved the last paragraph, River's going to look after Jayne.

This is a lovely story. I like that Inara & Mal are just sleeping together, not jumping into things.

I love this! You have River down pat. I mean, the care for the crew, it is her family now. Her being so into everyone, she can't help but treat them as family.
Beautiful! Keep with this.

"Mal had been giving her time and space. Well, time and space other than the stealthy kiss attacks he’d been bombing her with intermittently."
that's our cap'n...can i just say that i love this series??? rayne always rocks my 'verse...
