“Qingwa cao de liumang!” Wash swore. The scanner screen showed an Alliance freighter hovering over Oeneus near Atalanta station. Further out, a cruiser kept watch while lines of blocky shuttles ran supplies from the freighter down to the planet’s surface. Mal and Zoe studied the screen over Wash’s shoulder.

“What is it?” Inara asked. She stood just inside the hatch, still holding the tea she’d just finished brewing when Wash had called Mal and Zoe to the bridge.

“Gorram hundan are settin’ up a base here,” Mal said. “And who wants to lay odds that Big Ricky knew about this when he hired us? I guarantee they’ve been here longer than two days.” Just what Mal needed, another complication. The whole crew had been walking soft around him since they left New Melbourne. Book and Inara had hardly spoken to him.

“Why would he send a shipment of his own goods right into this?” Wash asked Mal.

“Maybe to test out the situation, see if the Feds are searchin’ inbound ships and whether they’re lettin’ his chow hit the market. Not like we got any friends to give him payback if we get humped.”

“To heck with it then!” Wash said. “It only took two days to get here from New Melbourne, let’s go back and return the goods. And let Jayne take the cost of the fuel out of Ricky’s hide.”

“Most like the Feds have been trackin’ us for some time,” Zoe said. “They see us turn tail now, they’ll be after us and sure as gui they’ll do a search.”

“We’ll be hailed soon,” Wash said. “They’ll want to know where we’re headed.”

“We’re gonna get searched in any case,” Mal said. “I ain’t worried ‘bout the cargo, but it won’t work so good hangin’ Simon and River out the window this time. That station’s got too much traffic, someone’s bound to see ‘em.” He put a hand over his mouth while he thought, then turned to the system chart on the control board. “I re

Another part so soon? Molto bene!!

River rediscovers life. Today's subject: Vanity! :D
Hilarious and more than a tad unsettling, that. I feel for Simon.

Inara's plan and her stubborn stance in confronting Mal were spot on. She has a smart mind and the guts to take on Mal's Frown Of Doom. I much enjoyed the entire dialogue of that scene, Zoe, Wash... just for the rhythm of it.

The original characters, Mal's deal-gone-medium-well, the plot, all of it great. Like said before, it's exactly like an episode.

Great great work! I can't believe this is your first fanfic!

Oh wow, loved this! That *tamade hundan* Kamath set the Captain up again, must have tame purplebellies at his beck and call. Loved the quip at the end about it being *awful bright* then Zoe and Jayne shooting the gorram lights out! Way to go! Ali D :~)

I loved seeing a bit of inara's life her job through the eyes of river. Probibly not with the same mind set but still beautiful and revealing i love you inara, you do her so well. and i don't mean the dramatic almost annoying part that most people seem to see but the strong smart business woman. The one that has a tendency to be the voice of reason and wont mind confronting mal to be it. though i know inara also is suposed to have some feelings even tiny ones for the captain, and i love to read about it. But its fine with out the angst and UST, Inara's character is so much more then that, she is a business woman and an artist. and you capture it, not many do capture this side of her.

Great work here, and the set up for the next chapter has me wondering what's going to happen next?

DAMN
What is going on here? Poor Mal. It never goes smooth.

:Jayne,” Mal found Jayne polishing his knife at the table. “We got a complication in plans.”

“Wouldn’t know what to do with myself if we didn’t,” Jayne replied.

I love that line. It was so perfectly Jayne.

I'm with RinnyPJ--you just nail Jayne. It's so much fun, the way you get his voice and the humor of the situation.

Mal is so pig-headed and stubborn (about Inara's plan) and I hope it all works out so she can give him one of those I-told-you-so looks. You write him very well, and from what I can tell, this series is going to center on him, which is a very good thing. :)

“We got a complication in plans.”
“Wouldn’t know what to do with myself if we didn’t,” Jayne replied.

LOL.

I loved the scene in Inara's shuttle when River was talking about sex and watching Inara with the client and Simon was just so flustered.

Uh oh, the Alliance is after Mal (again), time for some thrilling heroics.
