After watching Serenity for the 3rd time, this little scene came across as a private discussion between Mal and Zoe rather than about the ship.

“Sir, we have a green light. Inspection’s pos, and we’re clear for up thrust.”

Mal assimilated this information as he strode up to Zoe.

Staring her straight in the eye he asked, “Think she’ll hold together?”

With his eyes, Mal let Zoe know he wasn’t talking about Serenity. He needed to know how she was doing and didn’t want to get all touchy, feely on her. He’d heard from Jayne about her actions back in Mr. Universe’s complex and knew she’d had a death wish at that point.

Zoe stared back for a few minutes and then answered.

“She’s tore up plenty, but she’ll fly true.”

Relieved at her response, he went back to business.

“Make sure everything’s secure. Could be bumpy.” He said as he walked out of the cargo bay.

“Always is.” She replied to his departing back.

'Ain’t that the truth', Mal thought as he headed to the bridge.

I agree with you that this little exchange is really Mal asking how Zoe is. And she tells him. I love the line that "she's tore up plenty, but she'll fly true."

Thanks for pointing out this subtlety.

Thanks. It just struck me that it was so easy to take it as a ship discussion at first viewing and by the third it had become this.

I like it, but you might wanna take a look at this line and maybe correct it:

"With his eyes, Mal let him know he wasn’t talking about Serenity."

not good at all... and it's quite obvious that mal wasn't talking about the ship. by explaining it, all of the subtlety and emotion is lost. it's meant to show that they understand one another and care about one another even though they maintain their captain-subordinate relationship

Thanks for the shiny feedback everyone. And I fixed that line, thanks for pointing it out.

To anonymous:
I'm glad that you thought that it was obvious what was being said their but I personally didn't catch it until the 3rd watching of the DVD, so I posted this in the hopes that people who hadn't seen it already would see what I and obviously you had already seen.
