A/N: First, many thanks to Kispexi2 for all the wonderful help betaing this! It's a better story thanks to you! Any errors that remain are strictly mine. Second, this is my first attempt at fanfiction in any genre. It's been fun writing it, and I hope everyone enjoys reading it. Last, feedback is much appreciated!

Oh, yea, DISCLAIMER--don't own it, never did, never will, just having fun playing.

MEMORIES

In the moment between sleeping and waking, he knows he is content--more content than he has ever been--but he doesn't know why. As the shroud of sleep lifts, and he feels the warmth of another body radiating on his back and the weight of an arm across his waist, he remembers and wonders how he could ever have forgotten. In no hurry to leave the warmth of their bed, he smiles as he remembers.

He remembers the first time he saw this man who now means so much to him. As he'd watched his belongings and River's cryo-chamber being loaded on the ship, he'd wondered if he'd made the worst mistake of his life when the captain came swaggering up to his ship. In that brown duster of his, with the pistol on his hip, he'd looked like one of those disreputable outlaws portrayed in old vids from Earth-that-was. They took an immediate dislike to each other. A situation that wasn't improved when it was discovered that he was a wanted man, nor when he'd used Kaylee as a pawn in his desire to escape the Feds. It had taken him a long time to live that down, but eventually everyone had understood his reasons and forgiven him.

He remembers when River came out of her cryo-chamber too soon, and how the captain thought she'd been sold into slavery. It's funny now, but then--no, absolutely not. His sister had always been the one shining light in his life, and what the Alliance had done to her had been almost more than he could bear at times. But every time he'd been at his most despondent, the captain had been there encouraging him. Of course, sometimes that encouragement had taken on the form of shouting, but it had worke

Hm, let me start by saying three words:

YOU DID GOOD.

On the other hand, you shocked the pants right off me. This is left-fieldism at it's best. This is a story I do not want to imagine.

But it's well told. The parallel kept me interested throughout.

But I thought Kaylee was going to have 10 000 of Simon's babies!

Hm. Typos, nothing really. Details. The sentence with -putting him on a pedestal- doesn't work for me. Rephrase it if you're going to print it. Like I said. Details.

I'm laughing and yet I wonder: Why would you do this to my favorite caracters?

I guess that's what you're smiling about...

Forgot to say, I did have fun reading it because it's a smart story. I lived it with shock and a bit of anger but that's my problem.

I had to think about this for a moment. I was hoping for the kind of love between men that doesn't involve the warmth of the other's arms. I could have believed that, but waking up in bed, that took me right out of the story.

And when can I read the next one?

Gedeon,

Glad you liked it, even if it did go where you didn't want it to!

Hmm, I like that thought about "love between men that doesn't involve the warmth of the other's arms." I'll have to think on it for a bit, and see what I can come up with.

Be warned, though, I like M/S as a slash pair, so that's where my next story goes as well. Look for it in a week or so, depends on how badly my beta reader picks it apart. LOL

You're a very good writer, to put it mildly. Your writing is lush and evocative, and you have a great attention to detail. And, of course, everything's structurally and grammatically sound. I'm assuming you know all of that already.

I'm not an M/S "shipper," but that doesn't really affect my enjoyment of a story when the portrayal of the characters and their logic rings true, and it does here.

I know the concept (and even the title) of this particular piece say otherwise, but I really wouldn't have minded a little less reflection and a little more immediacy. It seems obvious that pensive discoveries, relationship stories, and internal narrative are your strength, but I'd love to see what happens when you break out of that. It would be interesting to see you tell a fast-paced story heavy on dialogue and physicality. And I don't (necessarily) mean sex.

I look forward to reading more of your work. As I said, you're quite a talent.

Where's the hot sex?

Huh. I mean... this was really beautifully written. I disagree with Gedeon that it was total left-fieldism; especially when you tied it with that moment on Higgin's Moon when Mal finds Kaylee and Simon all cuddled up and Simon makes an ass out of himself. :D

I liked it. I can't see that first kiss being sweet, tender and passionate, though. I think their first kiss would be more tentative, awkward, complicated- just because NOTHING those two do is simple!

Cub, thank you so much! Such compliments! (Blush) I'll see what I can do in the future re fast-paced with dialog & phyiscality. You're right, it's not my strength, but it's something I hope to try.

SameErtia, this is my FIRST fanfic, give me some time. :-) I'll write sex eventually, just got to get comfortable with the idea first! LOL Ooh, I hadn't thought of tentative and awkard...would have put a whole different spin on the ending!

Glad you both enjoyed it and thanks for all the kind words.
