Why would Mal have a problem with that? Actually I could see where he’d have a big problem. What if the rolls were reversed? I like that he took option “B”. Don’t know how Inara will feel about being played? And I don’t know what the crew would do if and when they find out. What they should do though is fasten down all the furniture and lock up all dishes. There may be one angry she-demon aboard.
Excellent spin for the first three pages eb….it was so extreme and off character for the boss to be acting as such that I finally realized something was up!

That was really interesting. Though I think Inara's work is going to eventually become a real issue between them in time.

Have to say, slightly amused too that Inara happened to get a bit of her best case scenario WHILE Mal is being in character and still kinda grumpy about some things.

Yep, it was the carrying all the packages that did it for me - no way Mal would offer! He'd still do it, but he'd probably complain. A lot. Nice opening(s), and the options were interesting. I've never seen Mal as being the kind of character who would ever be able to accept Inara's choice of work, and you show her as just childish enough to stamp her foot and be stubborn. Interesting. Very interesting!

Well... I'm not sure it's being stubborn about work is the problem. They both are stubborn. Mal hasn't made any of his decisions about taking safer jobs because of Inara, and here, he's asking her to make a decision about her work JUST because of him. It's not really a fair trade. And Inara DOES have the right to pursue her work so long as it's not hurting anyone (Mal doesn't necessarily even do that).
My issue here was more that Inara still isn't being entirely truthful.
For me it was when Mal offered to take her to Londinium. Never ever.

Need I mention just how much FUN it was to write this chapter? It was one of the first I wrote for Two by Two by Two, and I've had to sit on this thing for *months* before being able to post it! I'm so enjoying your feedback about just when the OOC-ness began to get to you. Interesting typo, ZBP, about Mal and Inara exchanging...er..."rolls." ;-)
If anyone would like to refresh on the past events referred to in this scene, the last time Inara came onto the bridge and asked Mal to take her to a civilized planet for "secret Guild business" (her medical treatments...she still hasn't told Mal about her illness, all she's told him is that the "secret business" is not seeing clients) was in <a href="http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=23536"Break Out, Part 2</a>. That's when he enacted Plan A (get angry, get slapped in the face, etc.). The chapter where Mal told Inara that she should have just asked him straightforwardly was <a href="http://www.fireflyfans.net/bluesun.aspx?bid=23582"Shadow, Part 1</a>. (I've tried to put in links here.) Mal's got a big motivation to try Plan B here--he asked her to marry him and even though she didn't say yes, things are "going well" as Kaylee would put it.
Yes, the way it actually went was a bit better than Inara's imagined "realistic" scenario. Of course, she didn't actually ask Mal the same question, did she? They will have to confront the issue of Inara's work sooner or later. It's the elephant in their relationship living room.

That little paragraph of wishful thinking at the end left me feeling neither Inara nor Mal have actually played out their chosen scenario yet. Ali D :~)
