I thought I should comment first, seeing as you gave me the honor of crediting me with beta reading when I only read maybe a few lines or so.
Dinner was adorable, and River's conversation with Ip well written. I also enjoyed her recoil at seeing a primal scene with ship-based mom and dad... I myself have long thought that she watched Simon and Kaylee more just to weird Simon out than any particular or abnormal interest, which this would go along with.
After reading this chapter though, I think I ought to be careful about that rating after all.

If the consensus is that the scene is too graphic for an R rating, I will edit it.

eb …..I really liked this chapter of the story. Seems as though the Captain , AND Inara did some cookin this time round…
“ Ya mean ya bagged it out of season?”
You have me laughing with Jayne’s comment here. Happy to see the big merc recovered by telling Mal how good it was and shoveling a ton of food down the ‘ol gullet. Actually you made me a very hungry with what must have been almost a banquet setting at the galley table. The meal sounded as if was a hit.
I’m a bit curious who Mr. Holden is, and what’s his agenda? And I’m hoping Kaylee is all right, could there be a little Kaylee-Bell on the way?
Really fun read eb, enjoyed it!

Ah, right, NSFW. Anyway, I'll continue reading at home.
It's good, don't worry.

I think it is fine. I think I would just add a not safe for work at the top so people know.
So I am wondering which is the big shoe, Holden call, river's fever or Kaylee's "problem" :)

I've added a "may be NSFW" in the header. You all can decide for yourselves if you want to read it at work or at home. Thanks to folks for weighing in with opinions on that. I'm free-lance and work from home, so I never have to worry about that particular problem. :-)
Nutluck: By the time we're done with this 10-part, 45,000-word story, it'll be pretty clear that the shoe has dropped! Meanwhile, I have foreshadowed many of the "drop-ables" in this section.
BPZ: Yep, Inara's cooking, too. Glad that Jayne's words and antics made you laugh. As for Mr Buck Holden, he's appeared in my stories before, and if you'd like a refresher on who he is, you can skim over "Adventures in Sitting" where they met him and he gave them a job, and "Sparks Fly" where the consequences of that job became apparent. Links in the header.
Bytemite: I agree that River was just trying to weird Simon out, before; she never would have opened the connection to the shuttle if she knew what she was going to find in there! Glad you enjoyed the feast.

I think River enjoys playing the bratty sister to straight laced Simon's too-easy-to-fluster propriety and awkwardness.

Mal is such a sweetie here...I think I've had Kaylee's symptoms before, usually in the morning, though.
hmmm...who is this man waving for Mal and River's mishap had me thinking how much Mal's embracing the physical side of his relationship with Inara…. lucky man.
looking forward to more

Thanks, Platonist. Mal's been feeling lucky lately, an unusual state for him. Simon will be diagnosing Kaylee's symptoms soon, though I could tell him what they mean, as I've felt exactly the same way.
