Mindful of what had happened during the last spacewalk he’d made with Kaylee when the navsats failed, Mal was on the lookout for signs of sabotage or booby trap, but none was evident. “You’re talkin’ wild, Albatross.”
She gave him a brilliant smile, like he’d just got the right answer to a riddle. “Technically, I’m quoting Wilde,” she said, “but I’ll give you full credit.”
This left him shaking his head in earnest. No telling what went on in that brain of hers. His albatross.
Mal is at his best when one on one with his crew and lets his guard down a little. Good chapter.

Epic pun war! Always fun to see Mal settle into his cool-older-than-older-brother role.
Also, really funny to hear Ip call River out her (this time intentional) use of quirky language parsing. He came just short of hypocritically telling her not to sew on purple patches, didn't he? Of course, subverted to hell and back when he finds out what really happened to her, and yet, somehow, still entirely hilarious.
It's also nice to see River kinda almost coming to terms with what was done to her, and say it on her own (even though obviously it'll always be traumatic). Simon's right, she is healing, and that really comes across here.

So…..the mysterious object is a tracking device! Made me smile the unspoken exchange between Mal & River (who would want to track us?)
Ip Neumann is clearly an interesting fellow. Don’t think I’d have told so much about myself (and my sister) if I were Simon though. Guess the doc is more of a trusting soul than I am.
Excellent chapter EB. Almost think Janice coulda put it there to keep track of Jayne…ha…ha if it hadn’t been there already.
Looking forward to the next….BPZ

Thanks, folks. Glad you liked this chapter. You all have beta reader and reader feedback to thank for the highlights of this chapter. First, my beta reader, who said, “Really? That’s what you’re planning to do with that tracking beacon? No, no, no!” and caused me to re-write most of this chapter. And also, RionaEire, who wanted to see River get a chance to go on a spacewalk. And you all, who gave me such a hard time about Mal’s conversation with Book-in-his-head that you provoked the Oscar Wilde quotations, which led naturally to Douglas Adams referencing Wilde, which formed the substance of the scene you all seem to have liked. I’m glad you liked River standing up to Mal, and the other River and Mal exchanges as well. Bytemite—yes, Ip came very close to following Sidonius’s lead himself! Because let’s face it, it’s just SO tempting to fall into the Sidonius trap. BPZ—I tend to agree with you that Simon shouldn’t have told Ip so much about himself and River. But River kind of took control of the conversation, didn’t she? And she seems to trust Ip. Ip seems to engender more trust than he has earned. Even Mal has difficulty mistrusting Ip, even if perhaps he should. Don’t give up hope, BPZ, I may bring Janice back in to the story again ☺….

"Brigadoon" huh? Hmmm...come to think of it there is a bit of a Brigadoon-ish quality to this particular story. I'm including an author note on the story title in the next posting, with cool links, so maybe you'll be able to shake the Brigadoon image. :-)

Thanks, Platonist. Glad you liked the focus on River this time. Mal may rant about it, but he knows it's good to be questioned. He's enough of a self-doubter to know that he's not always right.

Douglas Adams, the famous 20th century philosopher! Well, his works really were philosophical, in a way. I really liked that line.
I also liked it that finally someone (Ip) called River on her obscure speech references. She's running around giving people the impression that she is crazy, when at least half the time it is not really crazy, just overly nerdy. Maybe in Ip she has finally found someone who can keep up with her thought processes.

ZM, it's always fun to include a few Douglas Adams references. You and Ali D have expressed frustration with River's obscurity at times...Ip wasn't going to put up with it!
