Blue Sun Room FICTION - GENERAL

Aw, I really hope that Zoe doesn't lose this kid.

Also, yay Beylix! You've got all the world information right, as usual. :)

(Sometimes I wonder if Kaylee might not have been born on Beylix, it would explain a lot. All we know is the name of her hometown from the Serenity Blue Ray, Kowlonshi. But maybe it's more likely she was born in the Georgia system).

I think I like Juju Kamara. Something about the way she holds herself, and the way she's found herself in a cattle ranching lifestyle, leads me to think she and Inara might hit it off. Might be some good conversations between those two. Inara could use maybe some encouragement, I imagine she might feel a little overwhelmed with Mal's background being so different from hers. This might be a chance to ask some questions, and figure out a way to fit into Mal's world a little without compromising her identity.

Unless Inara gets jealous or something, which is possible.

Forgot to comment on Shadow, duh me. That explains a lot...

It's hard for me to envision a romance between Mal and anyone...but, yes, if it were anyone, it would be Inara.

You're a good writer, and I liked this story. Have you written stories that aren't fan-based?––I bet you'd be really good at that.

I love the Simon-Kaylee thing...wish the show had continued to show how their romance bloomed. ;/

I agree with Bytemite about Juju Kamara, I can hear what she would sound like in my head, it's great.

I also really like the baby scene.

I'm back! Been away for work and revisions on this story had to take a back seat for while. Should be regular postings through the end of this story (6 parts).

Bytemite: I picked out Beylix as the destination when I was looking for some place for them to take the cattle, because it fit the profile. I read that despite the place being the system's garbage dump, there were many farming communities and thought, aha! Bingo! and took the story from there.

I, too, would like Kaylee to be from the Georgia system, because it would go a ways to explain why Kaylee seems to "get" Mal from a background perspective. Maybe it's just that they're both from mostly rural worlds. There seems to be a tradition (fan-derived?) that Kaylee is from a place called Harvest in the Red Sun system, and I've mentioned that in a previous story of mine.

Byte and m52, I'm glad you like Juju Kamara. I like her, too. You'll see a bit more of her before long. I like Byte's idea of Juju maybe having a talk with Inara...may have to do something about that.

t1g3rl1ly, welcome to the party and thanks for commenting. Mal has a hard time expressing his feelings toward anybody, but I agree that if he could express them at all, it would be his feelings for Inara that get expressed. If you haven't read my fic Adventures in Sitting, that's where I show how they first got together (in my version of the verse, anyway ;-) ). In any case, their relationship is, and always will be...COMPLICATED.

Simon and Kaylee...there's some interesting Simon and Kaylee stuff coming up in this story. Hope you like it.

m52, thanks, glad you liked the baby scene :-)

No, I haven't ever written other fiction. I write some non-fiction in the course of real life, and have been a hobby essayist since I was a teenager, so grammar, spelling, constructing paragraphs and such don't scare me. But while some of the non-fiction I write might be entertaining, writing fiction is a whole new world, as I have never before dealt with characters, dialog, and plot. I've had fun with the characters and dialog, but to be honest, plot still really scares me.

"I, too, would like Kaylee to be from the Georgia system, because it would go a ways to explain why Kaylee seems to get Mal from a background perspective."

o.0 Holy cats. That's pretty much my reasoning too. I can't recall right now if Beylix is in the Georgia system, but I always thought one of those seemed right. Harvest is fine for Kaylee, but it's a farming world, so while it might explain Mal's Prairie Harpy comment, it doesn't explain how Kaylee has so much experience already with machines.

I guess really the only consideration for Kaylee's homeworld that would be canonical is that it has to be within the same system as Paquin, because that's where they're headed when they have to land around there for Bester to try to fix the engine one last time.

At times I've considered putting Jayne in there too, but I've never been sure if that's too much.

And after all, some other worlds outside the Georgia system have the clear rustic twang as well, like Lilac (Blue Sun System, which apparently has a Guild training house as well?).

There's a lot of thinking that Wash might have been from Beaumonde, and I kinda agree with that.

Yay, conversations. :)

You do really well with plot, BTW. Your episodes seem like Joss episodes. Nice little twists and surprises, with a western-future vibe.

Ok that went way to smooth, now I am waiting on the other 2 ton metal spike covered shoe to drop.

"He chuckled to himself, picturing the Companion showing up for cow duty in a watered silk kimono and high heels."

Yeah, that IS a funny picture!

And I can just hear the sound track that goes with "Juju Kamara strode up the ramp like the Queen of Sheba entering the court of Solomon". Perfect.

Really loved this, your observations of Mal and the cattle tending through Ip's eyes was nicely done and I am glad the two are able to be on a friendly footing. Very interesting to discover what those ships were carrying and kind of chilling that even after everything the rotten Alliance did to Shadow they still come back to rape the land of anything still useful. I can't imagine how much it all hurts Mal and the fact he still functions and cares for his crew says a lot. I don't think Zoe will lose this baby and absolutely loved how she dropped her pregnancy into the conversation. Lovely all round and I really am liking JuJu, a smart practical woman who seems to have her head on straight. Did wince though at that list of parts Kaylee told the Captain they need. Hope they have enough funds left for some food... Ali D :~)

Nutluck--"2 ton metal spike-covered shoe"--yikes! I'd better run! No, wait. Yeah, there'll be some shoe-dropping, but I think you'll find it's unexpected.

ZoesMom--glad you liked the picture of Inara with cows. "Green Acres" with Inara as Eva Gabor. And if you had in mind Handel's music from the oratorio Solomon, you got it.

Ali D--We're not done with the Shadow plotline, not at all. Yes, it's really, really rotten and slimy what's been going on there. We will eventually find out more. I'm very glad you liked how Zoe announced her pregnancy. And, oh yes, Kaylee's parts list is long and financially painful. We'll see how they deal with that.

"Green Acres with Inara as Eva Gabor."

Have you been reading my mind again? Tsk.

Great story so far EB… Sorry that I’m running a little behind on my comments. Been a while since I’ve actually had time to sit down and read so many good browncoat stories on FFF.net. I really enjoyed this one and will move on to the other chapters very soon.

Sounds as if the last time Serenity delivered cattle for Sir Warrick wasn’t so bad after all. That or either Mal’s had enough time to forget about the aggravation.

Also Kaylee’s maintenance list is a bit overwhelming. Makes me kinda think that Zoe’s initial observation when she first entered the cargo bay with Mal, all that time ago, may not have been too far off the mark. Don’t get me wrong, I love Serinity, but she does take so much looking after…(smile)
