Ace, all the way through. Both of their introspective moments, hoping and worrying whether Mal would be able to stop her and apologize before he lost her, Zoe's words, and then finally their conversation.
I was just as surprised by the passenger brides as Mal was, though, I don't necessarily think it was wrong to be wary about what he was getting into. But they needed the money, and that was their only option and nothing else, then Zoe probably was right to make the call regardless. And at least if the women were in a bad way, they could then try to help them in some small ways.

At last! I was beginning to think Zoe was going to have to knock their heads together and lock them in the shuttle - except she did, just a lot more subtly.

Wow. It's been a long time since I've read a better summary of the twist inside Mal's heart that makes him act - like Mal. You did a magnificent job of detailing the Mal, Zoe relationship and why it works so well in the way Joss constructed it. I am blown away by the honesty that surfaced as Mal contemplated losing Inara and any chance of regaining a meaningful life. But what was really his surrender was really all his gain. Beautifully done and a wonderful chapter in this story. I found myself reading faster and faster to find out if it was going to have a happy ending or another cliffhanger. So happy it's not a cliffhanger.
And kudos to your sounding boards also. They did a wonderful job seeing and listening to you through this chapter - one of your very best ever! Your hard work was definitely worth it!

Bytemite: That situation with Mal and Zoe and the women was a difficult one. I think they were both right and both wrong about some things, it certainly wasn't a clear cut situation, and could easily have gone the other way. And there may yet be repercussions to this job in the future...
Jane0904: I don't think Zoe 'interferes' in Mal's personal life too often, but she makes it count when she has an opinion to offer, doesn't she?

Eep - I'm late! But, in mitigation, I did re-read the whole series from the first chapter in order to re-capture the fluffiness and the flow. Not so fluffy here though, and rightly so: Wash's death, the brides, Mal and Inara's demons and insecurities. I have to say that I was nearly as astonished as Inara by Mal!apology. It all reads so effortlessly, but yes, I can see that a chapter dealing with this much can't have been anywhere near as easy as the quality of the writing suggests. Hopefully you've got some momentum going now to update the fluffy-angst soon...

(I did that too, as a matter of face ;o) I`m so pleased it flowed and felt effortless, that`s wonderful, and so rewarding to know my hard work paid off. Thank you! Your description of a hangover gives me sympathy pain, and nearly makes me want never to drink again.

I loved this whole thing - the conversation with Zoe is one of the deepest, truest, most beautiful exchanges I can recall between them anywhere. I know how hard you worked on it, and it's just gorgeous. And Mal and Inara, I feel for them both, their despair and heartbreak, the fragile hope at the end.
