Booted footsteps sounded on the grated steel deck.

“That was quick.”

“Yeah, Zoe,” Malcolm Reynolds told his first officer as they exited the piloting section of the ship. It also headed up communications, “It was. Practically snatched it up, I’d say. But at this low a score, he’d be a stupid not to.”

“Low score all around it seems, even for our new contact,” Zoe Warren told him, “So the plan is as we laid out then. He offered a little more in the end, not much, but a little more…” she said hopefully…

The two were a study in contrasts. The captain had a tall sturdy frame, a light complexion, and an ordinarily handsome face crowned with fine brown flyaway hair. Zoe’s skin was much darker, her frame feminine and strong, her face exotically beautiful set with large dark eyes. They had a depth of history that their friendship was built on. Nothing suggestive, only a war that they happened to be on the losing side of.

“Honest work for honest pay,” The captain said, “And it’s still not enough to fill Serenity for the trip, fuel costs money, as much as I wish it were otherwise.” Mal paused, “And we already had this discussion, didn’t we?”

“And I reckon we’ll have it a few more times before you leave, captain,” Zoe said without flinching, “Your plan needs work. I’d go so far to say that it…”

“It what?” Mal asked suddenly, “It sucks?” he feigned a little hurt in his voice, but Zoe knew him too good to even register it.

Her dark arms crossed her chest, “You could say that, sir,” but it might as well as been her saying that very same thing.

“We’ve had worst,” He stood with her, stretching his suspenders with his thumbs, “All I’m doing is substituting a little more lonesomeness for a little fuel. Kaylee and Wash think that the shuttle can do it. They said so last night when we talked…”

“Think is a might far from will, captain. Kaylee and my husband don’t have the responsibility of looking after you,” She folded her arms, “Nor the experience to do so…”

“Carried me on your back the whole war did you?”

Oh this was hi-larious fun and so very shiny! I can't wait to read the next part and find out just why Zoe is so dead set against this little job. Love the way you depicted all the characters and that bit of fun from Wash at the end with him and Kaylee kissing the Captain on the cheek had me falling about in stitches! Ali D :~)

That was great! i can't wait for the next instalment.

Characterisations were excellent, if a bit too funny (no one got mad or shot anyone :)

Well that was darned good fun! I really enjoyed this--thanks for sharing. Your Mal/Zoe dialog was especially good, but they were all well done with so much good humor throughout. Favorite line, though, was Inara's:
"You like Jayne because he’s Jayne, he says whatever he wants whenever he wants. And he says it in the crudest way possible" Yup, that's Jayne.

Praise of the praiseworthy, thanks all.

I wish I could spoil some details on the next installment, but other than direction, I've got nothing.

Careful, next one might be serious.

*wink*

Keep flyin'

Loved this fic. Really wonderful characterization. Especially the Mal and Simon conversation. It was dead on.
Fabulous job on all the relationships. The double kiss made me laugh out loud. Can't wait for more!

Okay went back to find this after finding your latest. Too funny. Nice set up. Started off just right with plenty of tension. You really do have all the interactions and voices down...almost found myself taking characterization notes;) Great Great Job..!!! I so hope that this continues for a long time:)

Loving this series so far. Have read this one twice. Many laugh out loud moments - particularly all of Wash's lines. Loved the 'Brutus' scenes. You get the relationships down really well - Mal and Zoe, Zoe and Wash, Mal and Simon. And your Jayne is spot on - can hear him saying the lines. Some priceless dialogue - 'Read my mind' and so many more. Keep 'em coming! Please!!

There are several places in this fic where you've done
a good job with the character's voices. One of my
favorites is the scene where Jayne and Mal are moving
crates. I especially like the Wash/Zoe interaction.
And Wash was great when he had to help move a crate.
Very amusing.

The scene where Brutus is return to Wash is also
great. I couldn't stop grinning.

I don't quite understand why River would need to go
off her medication. If Simon prepared it before he
left couldn't someone else adminster it? (I think
she's been taking her shots without a fit since not
long after "Ariel." I know she said the medication
made her feel like a girl again.) Oh well, we'll
probably get the reason later.

“Be good.” River mimicked his smile, “Big day. Head
up.” Nice line.
