3 months post BDM. Mal and Zoe go to Badger's looking for work. Badger explains to them the recent events surounding the Miranda Broadwave. Afterwards Mal talks to Zoe about her harsh treatment of Kaylee. Rated PG for adult language and content. Word count = lots (but they're all worth it).

Chapter 3: Long Time, No Piss Off

Mal and Zoe made their way to the dirt hole where Badger based his operations. Usually along the way they saw the same bums wrapped in blankets. These bums were Badger’s lookouts and armed to the teeth under their covers. However they were nowhere in sight. The pair made their way around a fuel pump station to a scrap yard where they ducked into a cargo container that served as the tunnel to Badger’s place. Still no guards were to be seen. They finally came to the last door. The dark skinned guard sporting dreadlocks and a rifle with an under slung grenade launcher standing at the entrance was the only familiar sight so far. “Badger will see you,” he said. The guard unlatched the locking lever, swung it open, and pulled open the squealing heavy metal door.

Badger stood just beyond the door shaking his head, “Where in bloody hell have you been? Never mind that. You want a job?” Gone were the thread bare jackets, stained pants, tank top shirts, and rags for ascots. Badger had undergone a complete makeover. His shoes were real leather polished to a high gloss. His trousers were obviously finely tailored with the break placed just below the knee where it should be. The matching blazer was a double breasted six button jacket that

Lots of potential futures for the Alliance in this story and some very interesting political insights. Kind of reminds me of the 1960's. Loved Zoe's declaration at the end - very interesting insight into her character and her survival instincts. You've obviously put a lot of thought and effort into this 'verse - I'll really enjoy reading more!

ohh, I really love where you're taking this story. You've definitely put a lot of thought into the plot and it shows.

This is my favorite chapter by far and the end was just so sad - but very believable.

Thanks everybody. I was really surprised at what became of 2 lines in my orginal outline. 13 plus pages of text, almost all of it exposition. It was really draining to complete. A lot of things had to be arranged here. But its done and I'm quite proud of it.

OK, that explains everything. Pretty good job, keep it up. I really liked that insurrection bit from the last chapter and the college "anarchists" rising up. Brings back shades of "The Terrible Year".

Only thing is that while a lot of the actual veterans of the wars might not want to fight, what about the kids who were ten or eleven when the war stopped and had been raised since even earlier with the war? Now they're seventeen or eighteen, I'd expect more resistance to this from them; they've never smelt gun powder and this kind of thing seems like a spark that could get a bunch of young hot heads up in arms in the Rim as well as the Core. Just my opinion; anyway I'll be keeping tabs-keep on trucking.
