Chapter 22: Into the void.

Scorpion walked down the dreary corridor with the armed boarding crew to her holding cell. It was actually a nicely furnished officer’s room. The Congressman wanted her to travel in style, so he sent an Alliance heavy cruiser to meet her. The doors whooshed closed behind her and she knew that she was in custody.

Maybe they would execute her. She hoped for the best but didn’t hold her breath.

“I feel it coming apart, well at least I tried.” She said to herself.

There was a buzz at her door. And the handsomely dapper Captain McGovern walked in.

“There you are Maria!” he said as he walked in and hugged her. “You must be so happy to be going home once more!” he said. She didn’t understand.

“Captain!” she said and they exchanged kisses on each cheek.

What in the wild blue yonder is going on? She thought.

“I mean, Councilmen West- What a catch! Congrats on your impending marriage,” he said once more.

She tried to keep her composure. So they wouldn’t kill her- just marry her off.

She gave a sheepishly confused look: “Yes. Lucky,” she said, smiling. It was a false smile. One she had used many times before. Old habits die hard.

He sensed her hesitation: “What’s wrong?”

“I’m nervous,” she blatantly lied to him. For all his faults and what he represented- he was still a nice guy. And blond. And we all know blonds are not known for their intelligence.

“Ah, it is to be expected, it’s only a day away from Bellerophon, so don’t worry your pretty little head. There are some clothes in a drawer over there and plenty of books and movies on the cortex. I would like you to stay in here though; you’re on a military ship
