Disclaimer: It belongs to Joss and all those business people. I’m just playing.
Rating: PG to NC17. I will not put warnings on each chapter, because I don’t want to give things away. In general, don’t be getting into any of this if you’re not prepared for adult storylines, violence, explicit sexual content, and - oh my - bad words.
Many thanks: to several fireflyfans.net members: and for hours of beta reading and entertaining discussions of many things. , , and provided additional beta time on the early chapters. The talented did the lovely artwork. (Ain’t it nice?) and http://www.chinesetools.com provided many colorful Chinese phrases. One of fine fics provided a useful plot bunny. (I won’t tell which yet!) Finally – kudos to for her inspirational fic . Links: Prequels: The Fish Job () () and Easy Tickets () (). Timing, pairings, and canon blurbs are in my .
Leiasky - the angst is brought, huh? Poor Kaylee!
Amdobell - Jayne? Do something stupid? Never! ;)
nbz - other story arc coming to bite... LOL! Excellent way to put it. And yes, of course that will happen, though maybe not in the way you think. *evil cackle*
>I must say, that went pretty fast, though. He went from when he got the original job from Badger, to, like, 3 years ago in one short sleep.
Lambytoes - I have some pseudo science to explain the step, in the next chapter... but hell, it just works that way! But I don't think it's three years. In fact, I could argue that Jayne was on the ship for only a year at the time of the pilot. Possibly even less... ?
Desertgirl - it's all about the wikipedia LOL! I got this battle out of there too...
BTW, folks, the battle near Breskens, Belgium in Sept 1944 was fought by the Canadian Army. That one's for Nathan. :)
> Congratulations to you and Wikipedia for explaining Neurology 101 so well. It may be pseudoscience, but it was well planned and gave you a lot of plausible leeway in the future.
Katesfriend - I get the feeling you actually know the science... If I got this past you all right, then wa-hooo! :) I'm very curious about your list of loose ends... (I could be in trouble LOL!)
BEB - science-y exposition - what could be better? LOL! I guess adding a big dose of angst helps the pill go down, huh?
>OK, somehow I came away with the feeling that Zoe may not want some of the events of Mal's long term memory restored
Platonist - Oh yeah. That feeling may be stronger now, huh?
>Oh, and the beginning wasn't confusing at all. In fact, I think you've come up with a plausible explanation for River's bizarre appearance on the Serenity DVD art: it was from a cut scene of her imagining herself as some glowing eyed goth queen, ruling over her evil minions...duh
LOL! River as a goth queen, with eyes magically changed to blue - too funny! But wait till the last chapter...
Poor Kaylee.
And poor River. They could start a club. At least River's got the amusement of the "altered brain/altered brain" conversation. And I'm glad to see Zoe catch some relief with Wash, even for a second. Great scene, that. Makes perfect sense.
Jayne as usual saying speaking for the crew (even if only in his head)when he says he's sick of the situation.
And the noose tightens. Can we trust Lina?
(I think that's it - I lost my comment and am re-creating.)
Fabulous as always, thanks for spoiling us.
You can't take the sky from me
Great plot development. I didn't see Inara's suspension from the Guild coming at all. Wow! Is that self-imposed? But, then it would be called a sabbatical, so I guess not.
Loved River's momentary memory recovery
and how she's comparing herself to Inara in Mal's eyes. And all her insecurities about herself are surfacing. Inara would be a hard act to follow for anyone, let alone a traumatized young girl, wanting acceptance. I give you kudos on her character development and for making her a real girl. I just want to reach out and hug her and tell her it's OK to be River.
Kaylee, so sad... enough said.
Hopefully we won't have to wait to long for the next part, after the last chapter.
There is only you and a few other authors that have kept my interest this long.
And Kaylee - that woman needs help - from someone. Sometimes I think she's more stunted than Simon, and that's saying something. Sheesh, they're perfect for each other!
But the River and Jayne conversation was the best in this chapter. It was just perfect.
I am so glad that Inara is returning to Serenity. Mal needs her, even if River is going to be jealous and he’s not going to remember her. Or maybe he will. hmm???? See the wheels in my brain churning out all the possible outcomes…
I just loved Jayne and River having a coherent conversation while he was high.
Good luck with the tile, but don’t keep us waiting to long:) – Desert Girl
This is amazing. I actually dont have words to jusitfy how awesome this is.
And I agree with Leiasky... Kaylee, Kaylee, Kaylee....deary me.

Utterly fantastic work here, mal4prez! I honesty can't name just one part that I loved the most because this chapter was just full of brilliant character moments. River's fantasy tripping a memory from her time at the Academy...proto-Rayne from the Stoned!Jayne-River conversation on the catwalk...Book's dilemma over wether to help Zoe look after Mal or continue his watch over River...Kaylee's struggle with her all of her pains about how she think she's losing herself! Joss is bubbling with jealousy...and he has no idea why!
;D
BEB
Of course, I love Zoe and Wash's discussion of Mal - cuz, I just love that kind of stuff, and you always manage to give just enough, but not too much... letting the moment pass naturally. I'm always looking forward to these windows into Mal's past.
I also love the way Simon's diagram inherently portrays his personality and current disposition, or at least Kaylee's perceptions of it. It's one of those truisms that can be easily overlooked - the way a character will be consistent through all forms of their expression - speech patterns, dress, sexual relations, reactions to pot... I've always delighted in your consistency with them in this way.
But boy, you just don't let up on these poor characters!
Oh, and, point of interest... Oprah (don't ask) just had some guy on who had this weird amnesia episode. He mentioned something about having a 'dissociative' coping mechanism or some such. I grinned.
I guess we don't actually know how early or late Jayne and Kaylee got on the ship...I just kinda assumed that it was around a year after Mal bought Serenity.
Are you planning on continuing this in another series? or will The next chapter be it? I'll be sad if it is, this is great fic!
It's all coming across as ominous to me. Seems like River has to learn to be unhappy for rather a long time. Maybe longer. (as long as you don't break the first rule of fanfic it will be ok: River Tam must not die! Say it like the rules of Fight Club.)
As to the arc coming to bite in a different way than I expect - I doubt it. Can't happen when I have no idea where this is going. :P
It's like a game of chess atm. Never had the attention span to do anything more than just learn the rules.
@ Lambytoes I think "Back Stories" has been divided into three stories.
