Inara meets an old friend, River learns something she already knew, and some of the crew take part in irresponsible adult activities.

Sorry for the day lateness. My kitchen is going from linoleum to ceramic tile, by my own hands. Yikes! This leaves little time for fic-finishing. Chapter 14 will likely be late too...

Lambytoes - I have some pseudo science to explain the step, in the next chapter... but hell, it just works that way! But I don't think it's three years. In fact, I could argue that Jayne was on the ship for only a year at the time of the pilot. Possibly even less... ?
Desertgirl - it's all about the wikipedia LOL! I got this battle out of there too...
BTW, folks, the battle near Breskens, Belgium in Sept 1944 was fought by the Canadian Army. That one's for Nathan. :)

Well, there it is.
Poor Kaylee.
And poor River. They could start a club. At least River's got the amusement of the "altered brain/altered brain" conversation. And I'm glad to see Zoe catch some relief with Wash, even for a second. Great scene, that. Makes perfect sense.
Jayne as usual saying speaking for the crew (even if only in his head)when he says he's sick of the situation.
And the noose tightens. Can we trust Lina?

Good gorram, the angst keeps building and at the rate Mal is forgetting and becoming irritated it will be a wonder if any of his crew wants to stay on the ship with him. While I sympathise with Kaylee I can't believe how stupid she was to instantly go and send a wave to Inara. I just hope those *tamade hundan* hunting for the Captain don't trace the wave back and find Serenity. That would be the cap on a truly screwed up week. I surely hope Mal gets help soon so our shiny crew can slip whatever noose the Alliance want to slip around their necks. Ali D :~)

This is fabulous writing, Mal4prez.
Great plot development. I didn't see Inara's suspension from the Guild coming at all. Wow! Is that self-imposed? But, then it would be called a sabbatical, so I guess not.
Loved River's momentary memory recovery
and how she's comparing herself to Inara in Mal's eyes. And all her insecurities about herself are surfacing. Inara would be a hard act to follow for anyone, let alone a traumatized young girl, wanting acceptance. I give you kudos on her character development and for making her a real girl. I just want to reach out and hug her and tell her it's OK to be River.
Kaylee, so sad... enough said.
Hopefully we won't have to wait to long for the next part, after the last chapter.

Ohh, I get the feeling Inara is going to attract the kind of attention she's trying to avoid by her rash actions. . .
And Kaylee - that woman needs help - from someone. Sometimes I think she's more stunted than Simon, and that's saying something. Sheesh, they're perfect for each other!
But the River and Jayne conversation was the best in this chapter. It was just perfect.

Wow, never saw that coming.... Inara out of the Guild so soon, or is that just a cover story? Trevor Marone a bad guy, or just misunderstood? Book's meddling good, or bad? Kaylee's new invention a distraction or a necessity? You left me with a brainfull to ponder. Flooring or fic? Screw the patient waiting - I want to know!

Yet another awesome chapter. I am so drawn into the story I am almost heartbroken when I get to the comments. Although it is probably a good thing that you are spreading the story out. Otherwise I would stay awake all night trying to find out what’s going to happen.
I am so glad that Inara is returning to Serenity. Mal needs her, even if River is going to be jealous and he’s not going to remember her. Or maybe he will. hmm???? See the wheels in my brain churning out all the possible outcomes…
I just loved Jayne and River having a coherent conversation while he was high.
Good luck with the tile, but don’t keep us waiting to long:) – Desert Girl

Ah...the reality of human frailty: we are all boobs when certain stimuli is applied;D
Utterly fantastic work here, mal4prez! I honesty can't name just one part that I loved the most because this chapter was just full of brilliant character moments. River's fantasy tripping a memory from her time at the Academy...proto-Rayne from the Stoned!Jayne-River conversation on the catwalk...Book's dilemma over wether to help Zoe look after Mal or continue his watch over River...Kaylee's struggle with her all of her pains about how she think she's losing herself! Joss is bubbling with jealousy...and he has no idea why!

Very, very nice. I love how the whole perceptive companion thing gets all turned around on Inara now that she's back at the house. Also, her rushing off has this great mix of "Yay! Go Inara! Save the day!" excitement with some "Whoa, whoa, whoa... Hold on there, 'Nara, you don't quite know whats going on there," trepidation. And I must say, it is quite fun to see how Mal spins her about, even in his absence.
Of course, I love Zoe and Wash's discussion of Mal - cuz, I just love that kind of stuff, and you always manage to give just enough, but not too much... letting the moment pass naturally. I'm always looking forward to these windows into Mal's past.
I also love the way Simon's diagram inherently portrays his personality and current disposition, or at least Kaylee's perceptions of it. It's one of those truisms that can be easily overlooked - the way a character will be consistent through all forms of their expression - speech patterns, dress, sexual relations, reactions to pot... I've always delighted in your consistency with them in this way.
But boy, you just don't let up on these poor characters!
Oh, and, point of interest... Oprah (don't ask) just had some guy on who had this weird amnesia episode. He mentioned something about having a 'dissociative' coping mechanism or some such. I grinned.

Ahttp://www...When Kaylee finally tries to contact Inara, seh's left the House. But I'm glad that Inara's finally going, but how will Mal react to her if she finds them before, or even after eh gets all fixed up?
I guess we don't actually know how early or late Jayne and Kaylee got on the ship...I just kinda assumed that it was around a year after Mal bought Serenity.
Are you planning on continuing this in another series? or will The next chapter be it? I'll be sad if it is, this is great fic!

I WAS gonna say that you'd only see such a Jayne-River conversation when Jayne is stoned - but then I realised a similar moment in Easy Tickets was referenced. Would have sounded stupid when it was mentioned right there!
It's all coming across as ominous to me. Seems like River has to learn to be unhappy for rather a long time. Maybe longer. (as long as you don't break the first rule of fanfic it will be ok: River Tam must not die! Say it like the rules of Fight Club.)
As to the arc coming to bite in a different way than I expect - I doubt it. Can't happen when I have no idea where this is going. :P
