JOB SATISFACTION - Chapter Two

Thursday, June 7, 2007

The crew decide to hide while figuring out their next move. Sun, sea and sand … all Kaylee is missing is her boyfriend. Simon is torn and River plays ‘I Spy.’ A good healthy mix of fluff and angst.

Job Satisfaction

A/N: Thanks for all the shiny comments for Chapter One! And thanks again to my beta Mavourneen. Nice to see a little speculation on the Tams. And yes, BEB, I was sober when I wrote this… it’s been a long time brewing! Anyway, enjoy. Point of interest, Tasnim is Arabic for ‘springs of paradise.’

Chapter Two – Trouble in Paradise

“Look, I generally try to keep my mouth shut when it comes to discussing your plans…”

“Doc…”

“…Because, generally, your plans are le se, and I don’t like to cause arguments…”

“Doc, you might wanna…”

“…But, as your plans go, this is really taking the niao.”

“Simon!” Mal snapped. “Bizui!”

Simon folded his arms and managed to stay silent for a further five seconds as they all stood on the bridge, watching the small moon draw closer.

“But, captain…” he started again, well aware he was beginning to sound like a whiny teenager. “We’re …hiding?”

“Until we can think of somethin’ better, yes.” Mal confirmed.

Simon glanced over at Kaylee, who quickly hid her amusement and shrugged sympathetically at him.

“And you really think we’ll be safe here?” Simon pressed.

“For a spell,” Mal told him, relieved the doctor had stopped ranting. “Hardly anyone lives round here.”

Simon glanced at the approaching terrain.

“Er… why?” he asked.

The reason for his confusion was clear to anyone. They were landing on a large expanse of sand, a few hundred metres away from a glittering ocean. The sun was bright and the heat had hit them all the moment they’d hit atmo. Despite his reservations, Simon had to admit the place looked like paradise.

“Because this is all it is for the whole southern hemisphere of Tasnim,” Zoe said, indicating the ground. “Mile after mile of sand. Nowhere for cattle to

I'm really looking forward to seeing where this is going. I'm usually a smut whore, but I'm hooked. Good job!

>“Right. I’ll try to fit in some water sports between sedating my sister and power-napping.”

>Simon shifted, feeling increasingly useless. “Let me guess… Freakishly Small Crack In The Ceiling Only You Can See?”

Oh, how I love sarcastic Simon! He was especially well done in this chapter.

>'Excuse me while I think of an inappropriate joke.'

So very Wash.

Nicely done! I liked all the reflections on Simon and Kaylee's part.

I too loved Simon's snarkiness in this chapter, it was right on the money for him. Absolutely perfect, especially during his game of I-Spy with River.

And I also feel for him with the whole Kaylee/River struggle. It is so incredibly hard to find balance, regardless of whether or not you're sister is psychotic.

Oh, and I really hate Gabriel. Just thought I'd share!

I'm really starting to enjoy this. I hope to see more chapters soon, I agree with the others... Simon is funny! ^^

Now what would really be intresting is if Gabrial was the good guy and was trying to save Simon and River from the Alliance and Regan was the badguy.. or girl.

But don't mind my rambleing... ;p

I'm enjoying the series and good work.

Update soon please.

Was that a pun in your story/chapter summary up top, Chazzer? Cuz it's a good pun;)

Gotta say...I am all kinds of overjoyed you had Kaylee think on Simon's devotion to River being one of the things that attracted him to her, so getting all indignant is not the best thing she can do; it's something that doesn't really get looked at as much as it should in Silee-oriented flanfics...the paradox of Kaylee's attraction to Simon. However, I do feel for her...knowing that your boyfriend is the primary caregiver to a traumatized 17-year old psychic with instilled/unleashed violent tendencies? Not exactly something you can easily seek advice over:(

Still...Silee smoohcies! Definitely all kinds of happy about that:D
