Job Satisfaction

A/N: Well, here it is. Please don’t kill me! Remember, sequel on the wayyyyyyyyyyyy….. And, apologies for the formatting, which has all of a sudden messed itself up on ALL my fics (but apparently, no one else’s, thanks FFF.net!) So if it’s messed up on this one… sorry. LOL.

Epilogue

He found her on the beach, sitting with her toes in the waves, gazing out to sea. He approached her softly, not wanting to scare or disturb her. Her hair was whipping round her head in the strong wind, and he could see silent tears forming rivers down her face. He coughed softly.

“Kaylee?”

At his voice, she frantically wiped her face on her sleeve before turning to look up at him.

“What d’ya want, Simon?”

There was no anger in her voice, just disappointment and sadness, and Simon found himself wishing she would shout at him, punch him, even. Anything but that disappointment.

“Kaylee,” he said again, “We… we need to talk.”

She turned away again, watching the waves. “Ain’t nothing to talk about.”

He knelt at her side, and she flinched visibly, but undeterred, he reached out and took her arm.

“Kaylee, please, you have to let me explain…”

“Explain what?” she snapped. “That you think everything that happened was my fault? That you’re just gonna toss me aside every time River needs you?”

“No!” Simon said, panicking. “It’s not like that!”

She snorted disbelievingly, and tore her arm from his grip.

“Please,” Simon said. “Kaylee, I am so sorry. What I said was unforgivable, I know, but you have to believe me, I didn’t mean it.”

More tears spilled from her eyes. “Yes you did. It’s probably the most honest thing you’ve ever said to me.”

“How can you say that? Kaylee, I screwed up, I know, but I will make it up to you.”

She shook her head. “Too late, Simon.”

“No,” he choked, “No, don’t say that

Wow, Blackbeanie is going to kill you.

I'm not going to get angry, only because there is a sequel. Apart from the sad, this was still a really good chapter. Fantastically written.

While I do love Simon and Kaylee together, this is a nice change where it doesn't always end up with Simon saying he's sorry and Kaylee falling into his arms. Simon's gonna have to work extra hard to win Kaylee back.

Can't wait to read the sequel!

A very good story, but I wanted Simon and Kaylee to get together again. Of course.
Really good but I'm gonna go cry to myself now.

Not sure I really buy Kylee's overreaction here. If she's not mature enough to deal with an arguement/misunderstanding, she shouldn't be in any kind of relationship. Seems a bit overdramatic. But, of course, that tends to be Kaylee's MO with regards to Simon.

The sequel should be appropriately tense, that's for sure.

Something tells me Kaylee's reasoning is just a load of hogwash - she's doing this because of what Regan said. If I'm not mistaken, the Tam matriarch did imply that Simon and Kaylee would never work.

While I agree it's a bit immature on her part, if she's determined to leave Simon alone for his own good, there is a bit of nobility in that.

But the boy was going to confess his love for her ... that's gotta count for something.

I know it woulda shut me up!

Wow...blackbeanie had mercy on ya. 'Tis a day to be noted on the calendars;D

Really, this was an awesome series and I will be damned to Book's Special Hell if this epilogue didn't have the plot twist that Joss & Co. would have pulled: Kaylee forgiving Simon of his trespasses but not forgetting...and walking away from their relationship. The reasoning is complete bullshit and totally motivated by Regan's damaging words to Kaylee, but Kaylee makes a valid point when she notes Simon is still too focused on River and her mental health to be able to give enough of himself over to her...or allow Kaylee in deep enough to see his pain and "uselessness." I do hope, however, that the eventual sequel will get this matter solved by the end;)

I know this is a few years old, but sequel? Please? Where Simon makes it up to Kaylee?
