Mal revisits some good old times, then – a day in the increasingly complicated life of Simon Tam.

Thanks for the comments all! One thing I've gotten to like about LiveJournal is how easy it is to turn comments into chat, with mail notifications sent when I reply. None of that here - so I'm trying to respond in the following chapter. That way you don't have to check back.
nosadseven - I really hadn't realized I went straight from Mal torture to science in ET! You're so right! That must have sucked for you guys LOL! As for whiskey brand name-dropping... I like how you think ;)
platonist - re the Mal/Zoe bond... I'll be getting there. But not for a long while. :)
tamsibling - oh yes, Mal's deal effects Zoe, and will lead her interesting places... but maybe not in the way you think.

Thoroughly enjoyable, Mal4Prez. You have a wonderful way of displaying emotion. And I very much appreciate your attention to detail. Still working on reading your earlier stuff, but I'm glad to be reading this one.

Ok, first thing. I really like the art. I'm not a fan of line/art cartoony stuff, but this style was good:)
I like how you're focussing each chapter on one member of the crew while at the same time moving the plot along.
Poor Simon, being pulled in so many directions. Med school no doubt didn't teach him how to handle all of this. And certainly his provledged upbringing didn't either.
River is turning into a big brother's nightmare, Zoe wants to damage him if he can't fix Mal, he can't get Kaylee out of his head, AND he's missing the one constant, calming person he's had since he arrived - who happens to be avoiding him. . .
Poor guy needs someone to talk to. Badly.

Simon's feelings of helplessness are spot on. He has not been in the driving seat since the moment he arrived on Serenity.

This is some great insight into Simon and how he thinks. He is quickly going to lose his grasp on reality if he doesn't find either someone to talk to or some way to help his comrades. I wish he could speak with Kaylee - that maybe they could heal each other, but I don't know if either of them is capable at the moment.
Each interaction with River was absolutely perfect! I loved the snarkiness of Simon and River's plaintive attempt to make him understand that it's her choice and not his. Brava! Can't wait for more!

I think I've finally seen enough hints as to where you're taking this story and it is absolutely brilliant!. Now I understand why it's going to take so long to get there. I think I know your Amdobell hint too, and I've often wondered about that too. So Inara will get her wish.
Talk about frustration for Simon! Poor guy is cornered from everyone. What an opportunity to stretch him as a character. Your ability to write a character in 3 dimensions is a sheer delight. Can't wait till Thursday! You are evil but in the best way.

Utterly fabulous work here, mal4prez! Serious surprised Simon isn't completely mental by this point;D
Much as it's ironic...I really think Inara's presence is needed badly. Kaylee needs her big sister back (in order to help her start dealing with killing a man in anger), Simon needs some advice from someone divorced from the goings on at the moment and who can help him figure out his priorities...and River needs some sex-talk advice from Inara, since I am concerned she is not quite as in-control as she would like to be of her faculties. Much as I like Rayne...it has to come from honest and believable desires to start a relationship.
Really do feel for Zoe right now. The whole "Mal's losing his marbles" scenario is pushing her to a limit she's only been to rarely, and she's starting to realize her command skills are a lot more finite than I think she wants them to be. Much as Simon needs motivation to find a treatment...she's using too much iron fist and not enough velvet to gain results:(

P.S. Oh..and I was really drawn into this chapter by the flashback to Simon trying to make it a whore on Persephone. Mainly because this new knowledge shows Simon is more than capable of satisfying primal needs...but he won't use someone like that just because he can. I hope River does "read" this and take some wisdom from this...if only to confirm her decision. She needs to stand and fall on her own.

Another exemplary chapter mal4prez.
This is a great explanation on Simon's reluctance to start an intimate relationship with Kaylee. I never buy into the reasoning that he has River "to worry on" as a sole reason that they are apart.
His attitudes about gratuitous sex are as strong as Mal's. It ain't gonna happen until he is ready and it means something.
I'm thinking the ship is missing their Companion about right now...reassuring, lending compassion, and understanding, IS Inara.

You know, I'd been considering just how much Mal did remember in the previous chapter - especially when he asked about being a danger to the crew, I was kind of like, OK, so he definately remembers at least the non-Inara stuff from the Fish Job... And the release of tention in at least his awareness of

...and the release of tension in at least his awareness of the problem put me to great ease. But now with it clear that he is regressing... I feel so much for Zoe. She put out so much, and the way it has all disappeared is devastating. I am very much looking forward to seeing where this takes her. We all understand the way Mal and Zoe depend upon one another, but losing him this way is so heartbreaking - for her to have to essentially mutiny... I liked the way you illustrated the toll this is taking on her... her loss of that steady control that Simon observes... good reading.
And Simon. Poor Simon, with the weight of the world(s) on his shoulders. He's one of those people that takes things so seriously, as Kaylee once pointed out, he's an easy mark. You may not be taking the story this way, but I can't help but feel River's attention to Jayne is at least in part for Simon's benefit. (poison berries, and all...)

Love this and so glad that the crew are finally trying to get a better handle on Mal's condition and how it can best be treated. And poor Simon, so much pressure. The loss of Kaylee's friendship and presence, the constant worrying over his sister and the concern that he can't do anything to help the Captain when as a doctor that is his job. Hopefully the scan will provide some answers and everyone can move forward. Another truly excellent part! Bravo, Ali D :~)
