Disclaimer: It belongs to Joss and all those business people. I’m just playing.
Rating: PG to NC17. I will not put warnings on each chapter, because I don’t want to give things away. In general, don’t be getting into any of this if you’re not prepared for adult storylines, violence, explicit sexual content, and - oh my - bad words.
Many thanks: to several fireflyfans.net members: and for hours of beta reading and entertaining discussions of many random things. , , and provided additional beta time on the early chapters. The talented did the lovely Mal artwork. (Ain’t it nice?) and http://www.chinesetools.com provided many colorful Chinese phrases. One of fine fics provided a useful plot bunny. (I won’t tell which yet!) Finally, kudos to for her inspirational fic . Links: Prequels: The Fish Job (Comments
You covered all of the characters very nicely. Of course, you know me, I particularly liked the tension between Simon and Kaylee.
The flashbacks were nicely done too! And of course River would be good at crime and her turning to the man after everyone else got away and asking him if he was free was both funny and - odd, because she didn't flinch at the store being robbed! Won't that be suspicious?
Ok, now that I have that out of my system...
You are at your usual brilliance creating new characters, I liked Bradford. Loved Wash's daydreaming, Mal's unicorn, Zoe's disguise, Jayne's trim, River's whining about a boyfriend. All good to balance out the fright of Mal's state of mind. The scene at Badger's was wonderfully tense, I was feeling awful for Zoe. And am worried for Kaylee. Many thanks for showing us what happened directly after the conclusion of ET. So happy to be reading more from you! :)
Here I go... *happily* =D
I loved the image of Mal and Jayne being defeated by the stuff in a future version of a Sharper Image. Too bad Kaylee didn't get to go, she'd have loved it.
Looks like Simon has his work cut out for him...the "emotionally troubled" complement on the ship just jumped from one to three. I'm certainly interested to see how you play that one out.
It's all in the details, and you have them down. Keep up the good work.

This is such a great set-up - from River's temper tantrum, to the knowledge that Mal has no ruttin' idea who Inara is, to Kaylee's introverted nature, you are setting us up for 14 chapters of mischief, mayhem, angst and I'm hoping, a bit of love!
*sigh* Let the fun begin!
"Suspicious? What day is it? What month is it?"
"Today is the day when the first chapter of Backstories was released!"
"Wahey!"
Leiasky - yeah, River certainly isn't being smart. I like to think she sets her own priorities, and she's just good enough to get away with it. Most of the time. :)
Your attention to detail is exceptional. The voices are spot on too.
Well done!
Mike
I like your Wash and his pondering on being the pilot.
And Mal, Wow!, definitely gone and staying in that AU.
I have the feeling things are going to get mighty twisted.
Very enjoyable opening. I saw at the end of ET how much resolution would be needed to tie up the whole story, and hope - your views on pairings etc. notwithstanding - you'll show us a whole parcel of it, particularly for Mal.
It's...it's...HERE! Oh hallelujah it's here!
;D
Completely and utterly fabulous work here, mal4prez! From start to finish, I was totally absorbed in the story...especially when River goes into her temper tantrum;D
Really gotta give you props for the flashback to the post-ET moment of Zoe trying to talk sense into Mal before realizing his brain has just done a partial reboot and trying to get the missing part back will probably kill Mal unless it's done slowly. Be proud, mal4prez...you have taken up the mantle of Our Fearful Leader and have once again managed to uphold the level of quality and twisty goodness Joss is want to do:D

I'm so glad to see this fic up... and am so looking forward to the rest. And
River's closing line was perfect.
Mmmmm... Mal4Prez and MPhillips... Two great tastes that taste great together.
Oh, and I like your compromise on the ratings and stuff. Well played.
Although I think it has been so long since I read The Osiris Run that I have forgotten all the details of the ending, I guess I'll just have to read it again. I'm sooooo bummed:)not.
You can't take the sky from me
