“What was the stop this morning?” Alex asked Simon groggily. He had upped her pain medication enough that she’d slept most of the day; but the stop at the training house registered.

“We dropped Inara off,” Simon answered, and at that Alex came fully awake.

“Huh? Dropped Inara off where?”

She tried to rise up on her elbows, and winced as she did. Simon pushed her gently back down.

“She left...to work at a Companion training house, or somesuch.” He answered almost absently as he pushed buttons on the IV pump to adjust the flow rate.

Alex frowned, an uneasy feeling coming over her. “What prompted that?”

Simon shrugged and gave her an odd look. “Not sure. Why?”

Alex decided not to pursue it. “It’s nothing,” she murmured. She recalled her conversation with Kaylee, during her transport to the prison, about Inara and Mal. Kaylee had been concerned that Mal’s encounter with Alex might further complicate things. Alex tried to assure her she was only a blip on the radar, and wouldn’t mean anything in the grand scheme. Now she wasn’t so sure.

“When did she decide to leave?” she asked, opting to pursue it after all.

Simon looked at her curiously.

“A few weeks ago. I’m not sure exactly.”

Alex hesitated.

“You sure you don’t know why?”

“No, sorry. I don’t.” He checked the connections on her IV line and smiled at her. “Good news,” he said.

“What?”

“I’m pulling your feeding tube—you get to try some real food today.”

Alex felt her stomach roll. She made a face.

“Sounds yucky right now.” She patted her stomach and smiled a small smile. “’Course, the critter here would prob’ly disagree.”

I really have been enjoying this story. Got caught up in it. You have written Alex well, and continue to write true to the characters. The ripple comment from River in paticular seemed timely, true, and just plain right. Though I'm not certain if one can actually talk with a feeding tube in, especially if they are to gag while taking it out. Probably not there "B's" in paticular. Then again, I'm nitpicky, AND I'm not a Doctor.

I really am enjoying your story. You have great skill. Your prompt. Very much so. And you seem to enjoy writing it. As long as you continue with that, I'll continue enjoying reading it.

I started reading your story from the beginning this afternoon (your's is the first fan fiction I have read on this site) and now my butt is numb from being glued to my seat! lol I feel like I am actually watching episodes of FF while I am reading. You have truly captured all of the characters....including the one that you have created. Keep 'em comin'!!

Absolutely loving this as always though this part seems a little short. Maybe that is just me craving a bigger fix - LOL. River's hint at the end about Alex not being able to hide the ripples from Mal should coalesce into coherence in Alex's brain as she slowly unravels what the girl means. Couple that with finding out that Inara left and she should have a pretty clear picture. Can't wait to see what happens next, this is just so shiny. Ali D :~)

Oh...I sense some lovely moments of tension and angsty coming soon, cuz Mal and Alex are gonna have to hash out some big topics...and Mal's invovlement in the baby's life is only gonna fill up part of that discussion;)

Keep up the great work, ShinyTrinket!
