Could Have Been

After his mercenary’s betrayal of the two newest members of his crew, Malcolm Reynolds kept an eye out when they were on jobs. Just in case the money got good, and Jayne got stupid again. But there weren’t any more such episodes, and gradually he let that guard down; not all the way, but lowered. Jayne seemed to be proving his worth, showing some loyalty. Stopped being so mean to the doc and his li’l sis, even. So Mal let his guard down, and that was, he reflected later, one of his more stupid life moves.

No one knew why Jayne was late to breakfast that morning. It wasn’t like him to be last in line for food. He slid into his chair and didn’t explain anything, and after a few curious glances everyone forgot about it. Except remembering, Mal thought River had been very small in her chair that day, quiet, and didn’t eat much. He didn’t remark it at the time, because that was how River frequently was. Even now, he wasn’t sure; maybe he was just latching unto insignificant things and making them seem big.

But everyone knew what Jayne really was; the man didn’t ever try to hide it. And everyone, except maybe Kaylee, knew people rarely change. So why they’d all been stupid enough to be surprised at what happened, Mal couldn’t figure . . .

No one knew why, climbing unto the mule for the ride to the job, River had chosen to get in on the side Jayne already occupied, crawling over him and then hovering mid-crawl with her serious face inches from his annoyed one. When she spoke it sounded like she was choking on tears.

“Seemingly insignificant choices can damn your soul or lift you to atonement,” she said, and they all heard it, and even then no one’d had their mental lights on bright enough to know something was up. Jayne had shoved her off him and over into the corner of the seat with a snarl. Girl’d

I liked it. It is a different take on Jayne than I've read most in fanfics

ARRRRGGGHHHH

How dare Mal. Leavin' Jayne. Never been so gorram angry in my life. Could be because I've been doin alot of Jayne character exploring lately, and i'm getting to love Jayne more and more as I do, but...just leaving him...leaving him to the birds...

However, don't take that as a negative review, the story is well written, and I loved it, just, Mal makes me so angry sometimes.

One of things I like about this story is the way Mal acts. Besides being heroic, Mal is tough and hard. I am sure he had to leave the corpses of braver, more honorable men than Jayne on the battlefield during the war.

Ah, Mal, I like him I really do . . . but I just can't seem to write him 'nice'. He's had to do too many hard things in his life, I think, to suffer fools (or those he regards as such -- I don't consider Jayne one) gladly. Wouldn't he make people angry, because he's not a comfortable sort of guy?

Oh...wow...definitely got a shock out of this...though I gotta wonder why River didn't refuse to fly the ship till his corpse had been recovered? Yeah...Mal probably had justification in being a hundan...but River allowing Mal to just leave the corpse to rot? I dunno...

Still loved this to bits though, icebreather:D

"gotta wonder why River didn't refuse to fly the ship till his corpse had been recovered" . . . hi, BEB!
In my head, I imagine River not being lucid enough, from the trauma, (if she cared about Jayne as much as I'm implying here) to try to make Mal do anything. They drag her back to the ship and Simon drugs her up or she just conks out.
But actually I've made her quite cognizant here, so maybe I have a continuity issue . . .?
Anyway, thanks for the read&review!

Wow. You do a great angst. I'm a big Jayne fan --and I totally didn't see his death coming--but I enjoyed reading this. You nailed it. great job.

First shot at angst huh? Well, it worked - I feel like crying my eyes out! Could be because I'm a massive Jayne and Rayne fan, so it hits twice as hard. Really well written.
