I imagine Kaylee read the manual once (Mal had one in the engine room (came with the (very) used ship), and Kaylee figured she'd get some book learnin' to offset his 'prarie harpie' comment and how could she live it down if she missed something that was in bold type in the manual?) but quickly decided that it was written by trained apes. Only without the training.
Knowing the part number, and the torque spec are great, but they don't tell you what the ship sounds/feels like when a part's about to let go.
