Hmm....
Sunday, 01 August 2004 00:07:56

This seems to be far more than just a messageboard. Nice little blog built in. Well I guess for now I'll talk about my Kaylee costume I'm working on. My hair is blond so that's been an issue, but I'm trying to work out some ideas on making it a bit darker for Dragon Con (something that'll wash out because I have to be a blond for most of my other costumes!). I already had coveralls, from their short lived blip on the fashionable radar. When I first decided to do the costume I already had a shirt in mind and this was only after watching the show all the way through once, so I went and looked again and sure enough she wore a shirt in "Bushwhacked" while playing 'space basketball' as my friends have come to call it. The only difference is the color of the embroidery on hers is oranges and reds and my shirt has blues on it. The sleeves are even very very similar, so I'm pleased with that. I have two pairs of boots, and I'm not sure which I'll wear yet, but both would work. So as it stands at the moment, that's the costume status. Shirt - check, coveralls - check, boots - check, brown hair - a work in progress, engine grease? - probably going to use chocolate syrup, it's a pretty tasty substitute. Now if only I could meet a Simon cosplayer......

Don't get something about what River said?
Monday, 02 August 2004 02:33:33

In the 'Train Job' River says something about Mal that I don't get. She says "Mal is bad...in the Latin". What does she mean by that?

Why did Mal let them stay?
Monday, 02 August 2004 03:09:50

Why did Mal let Simon and River stay on Serenity? The two could get everyone in troble and ruin their lives if they get caught. And still Mal let's them stay.

Claire Wolfe Column on Firefly in Backwoods Home
Monday, 02 August 2004 11:06:31

Claire Wolfe, notorious libertarian author and blogger, has been a Browncoat for some while now. She just produced a column for Backwoods Home magazine with a review of Firefly and references to Serenity.

It's a raining day and I am listening to a little Firefly on my DVD and was coming up with a fun drinking game those of age could play, I know there are already a few out there, but I figured it would be great to get you the fans in on it! respond back to me with a few suggestions and I will compile a list and post it up...it will be the official FireFly Drinking Game, for fans, created by fans...can't wait to hear from you all!!!

back like a heart attack
Tuesday, 03 August 2004 08:23:28

Yep, here I am. Been back for awhile, trying to get myself on my feet. Nothing to special I suppose. Just been working and watching firefly all over again, trying to make up for so much lost time!

"Las Vegas": Spanish for "The Meadows"... Huh...
Tuesday, 03 August 2004 22:43:06

Elvis had it right... "Viva Las Vegas"... I swear that town is exhausting... But ain't nothin' better than partyin' in a city that never sleeps... Seriously, NYC has nothing on the level of excitement that Vegas has... Whoa... Must sleep for a week now to recuperate...

Where's the love....nothing from UHF?
Wednesday, 04 August 2004 04:09:37

So i am messing around online, desperatly trying to forget about this weekend and I come across this. Now I don't want to knock any classics here, God knows I love them, but where's the greats. "May the Force be with you," Ben Kenobi "I'll Be Back," the Governator "Alien Love. Whatchu talkin about Alien Love," Kit Ramsey "I'm your huckleberry," Doc Holiday "With great power comes great responsibility," Uncle Ben "Do you understand the concept of the tooth fairy?," Christopher Walken INSERT ANY LINE FROM ARMY OF DARKNESS "I'll be in my bunk," the hero of Canton Here are the 12 picks by Entertainment Weekly readers: 1. "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." --Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) in "The Princess Bride" 2. "Inconceivable!" "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." --Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) in "The Princess Bride" 3. "Have fun storming the castle." --Miracle Max (Bill Crystal) in "The Princess Bride" 4. "As you wish." --Westley (Cary Elwes) in "The Princess Bride" 5. "I'll have what she's having." --Female diner (Estelle Reiner) in "When Harry Met Sally" 6. "You had me at hello." --Dorothy Boyd (Reneé Zellweger) in "Jerry Maguire" 7. "Fasten your seat belts--It's going to be a bumpy night." --Margo Channing (Bette Davis) in "All About Eve" 8. "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together...and blow." --Marie Browning (Lauren Bacall) in "To Have and Have Not" 9. "If I'd been a ranch, they would've named me Bar Nothin'." --Gilda (Rita Hayworth) in "Gilda" 10. "Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea: They eat their young." --Ida Corwin (Eve Arden) in "Mildred Pierce" 11. "You're not too smart, are you? I like that in a man. --Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner) in "Body Heat" 12. "Get outta here! And don't come back for five to seven days!" --Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) in "My Girl" Entertainment Weekly editors didn't want the readers to have all the fun. So they picked 50 more great movie quotes from the last half century. Here are the top five: 1. "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it." --Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) in "On the Waterfront" 2. "We all go a little mad sometimes." --Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) in "Psycho" 3. "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me." --Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) in "The Graduate" 4. "Hey, don't knock masturbation. It's sex with someone I love." --Alvy Singer (Woody Allen) in "Annie Hall" 5. "She's my daughter! She's my sister! She's my daughter! My sister, my daughter. She's my sister and my daughter." --Evelyn Cross Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) in "Chinatown"

So far the feed back has been good for the firefly drinking game, but I am still looking for a few more fun suggestions, keep them flying!

Wow. So THAT'S what a good day is like.
Thursday, 05 August 2004 05:02:28

S'funny how life can reach a point where you don't even remember what having a good day feels like. Your soul doesn't even recall what wanting to smile feels like. But today I had a good day. None of that "You're a racist because you're white and I'm black and I don't like you. So that makes you a racist. And don't you dare call me a racist for thinking that, because if you do, I'll call you a racist and I'll win because you're a white male from the South, and everyone knows that all the white guys in North Carolina are racists." crap I've had to deal with at work today. And I spent seven hours with an amazing and beautiful girl, and listening to her play guitar and sing, and spend time with her listening to other people play guitar and sing. And suddenly, my soul remembers what smiling is like. I remember what wanting to smile feels like. And it makes me want to smile. So I am. PS. "Gee, it sounds like you love that girl." Why yes, yes I do. I am aware of that. I've loved her for a long, long time. Well, five years seems a long time when you're only 22. She's amazing and I love that girl. One of the best friend's I've ever had. But that's a rambling for another time.

What Do You Do When An Echo Won't Answer?
Thursday, 05 August 2004 06:10:38

57 days left... Picked up a friend at the airport who was returning from Chicago this weekend. We waited for about 20mins at the baggage claim for luggage that never showed up. There were about 15 others in the same boat. After someone finally went to the airline baggage counter, we found out that the bags had been put on another flight that had already arrived and were sitting on the floor not far from the carousel we were waiting at. I had to laugh about it because I've seen worse. (Like having my luggage arrive six days after I'd landed. My suitcase is better traveled than I am!). Then this guy next to us starts loudly spouting off to his wife about the idiots who work at the airline and how they are incompetent and didn't give a damn about doing their jobs. There were just two employees behind the counter who looked at each other as if to say "Oh crap, here it comes," but the blowhard and his wife took their bags and walked away. :disappointed: Now, I don't blame the guy for being ticked, (especially since the flight was over an hour and a half late to arrive), but just what did he expect out of these two people? There were over a hundred bags in front of their counter area from different flights. Personally I wanted to get in his face and tell him off :bash:, but the more I thought about it, the more it was obvious that the less said, the better. (Sometimes I have moments of clarity that astound even me.) No point to that, I just wanted to remember the moment. That said...I started this blog on the 29th of June, 2004 making this 8th entry in 36 days. At the time I started, this was a way to pass time and plumb the depths of my internal dialogue for perspective on the world and my raison d'etre. Time had been fairly, and maddeningly, accomodating, seeming to plod on only if unwatched. Now, with a deadline, things are moving like that old clock you always see in the movies. The minute hand is beginning to sweep across the dial like some supercharged propeller winding up for take off(and devil take the poor little spring). I'm in almost daily touch with my buddy Rod down south who has been working and researching the needs for our project. I feel somewhat guilty about still being here while he does the lion's share of the work, but from our conversations, I know that there will still be plenty for me to do once I get down there. Speaking of which, in about three weeks, I'm heading south for a week's vacation in order to look at a couple of apartments and meet with some people he knows down there. Afterwards we're going to sequester ourselves away (his wife and daughter will be visiting her folks that week) and start really brainstorming and problem solving while getting some creative work done. I keep thinking that I should be doing something now, but all I feel is empty and restless. It's 11pm and I haven't had dinner, but I'm not hungry. I'm actually still at work because I've been researching stuff on the net and paying bills and doing everything I could think of to avoid going home. (Why I chose to stay here, I really don't know...I'm certainly not going to miss this place that much.) I'm here in a dark building sitting in a pool of light, listening to music and wondering why I feel no resonance, no echo returning my thoughts with thoughts of their own. I should leave now...should...something... My spirit is sitting on a dock next to some dark mountain lake under a star-lit sky listening to crickets sing. It's in shirtsleeves on a summer night bathing in drifting pockets of cool air that my feverish skin drinks like water. It's on the top of a mountain overlooking a brightly-lit city wondering if a salve exists that might calm the ripples from my impatient heartbeat. Wherever it is, it's not here. That part hurts a little, but I don't know why. Why Can't I Breathe? -Liz Phair

Oh. Right. Karmic Backlash.

I have a good day yesterday, and what happens today? A lady gets pissed because I let her know that she pulled in the wrong way, and BOOM. No job for me. Know I remember why I don't let myself have good days. The next day always sucks ass.

The Movie and Such. No Spoilers.
Friday, 06 August 2004 01:03:27

Okay, recently I noticed that there was a thread about the end of the movie. Okay, I haven't read this, because I'd like to see the end. Sure, it'd be cool to know, but... I'd rather wait. Just, I find it odd that people want to tell off the secret. Okay, just my 2 cents. And such....uh, the movie will end with cool music and credits.

cat HELP needed
Friday, 06 August 2004 06:29:48

Okay, never had to introduce one cat to another. It's not going as well as I hoped. So....help? tips? suggestions? Landry had very good suggestions, but we kinda forgot to talk about what happens AFTER having them sniff each other while both are being held by people. I did that, they sniffed and my cat hissed, she hissed, blah..So day 2, they spend the night apart (geez they're beginning to sound like a married couple ). Now I put her in a carrier, like robinhood suggested. Seems to work 'cos at least they can't fight. Well my big furry beast Nemo (the cat, the cat!) seems more social than I thought. He's lying next to the carrier as we speak (or type and read), but she (less than half his size) is seriously growling and hissing, now what? She even lashed out at him. I don't want to keep them apart for ever, but don't want them fight like..uhm..well like cats I guess. Does anyone know if this is normal? am I doing it wrong? will they ever get along?....and so on.. HELP!!!!! :crap:

A Friend, a Cat, a Sorrow and Search for Meaning
Friday, 06 August 2004 20:42:23

This is not about me for once. Normally I cringe at my blogs because I feel a little self-conscious and narcissistic about always being my own main subject. Yeah, yeah, I know all the arguments about why that's a kind of idiotic way to feel, but feelings don't ask for explanations... I think that's why I enjoy reading everyone else's blogs so much. It's nice to be outside the faint guilt of looking at myself in a textual mirror. Besides, I like knowing that others have the same kinds of feelings and issues and trials and tribulations and events and worries and blinding moments of happines and....well, you get the picture. *twang!* (The sound of a guilty conscience being plucked like a nearly naked chicken.) WARNING! The subject of this entry is going to be very sad and painful. If you find it hard to read about the euthanization of pets, then please skip this and I'll write something more upbeat later. I promise. (I'll need to do that if only for myself. I'm feeling a little heartsick at the moment.) First let me say that the author of the following letter is a friend of mine. She's one of the most fantastic people I've had the pleasure of knowing and, if you follow the thread of her "live-journal" blog, you'll also see that she's one of the best writers you'll ever read. (When I finally get back to who I thought I wanted to be when I was growing up, I sincerely hope that that version of me can write as well as she does.) For those of you who want an inside view of this person, here's the link to her journal:

Catch up post
Saturday, 07 August 2004 00:51:57

So, it's been a week and there's not much to post of any significance. Visited my good friends last night and got to see their overly cute kids. Been a while since I saw them... wow, both (girls ) are gonna grow up to be honnies. Days count down till Serenity flys again.... 259 to be exact. DragonCon is 1 month away, and I'm still not sure how it'll work out, schedule wise. There's work on Friday, a possible football game to attend on Saturday, and then Sunday? Hmm... must figure out an itenary. For some odd reason, it don't feel like a Friday. Go figure. Watching Tomb Raider now, but I'm thinking about watching OoG later on. Been thinking far too much about politics. It's gotten beyond ridiculous. The left just lies and lies and lies..and the willing press never calls them on it. Oh well, life goes on. Keep telling myself that I need to try and make as much $ now so that if the unthinkable happens and JK gets in , I can try to out run the tax hikes. Gas will go up a lot more, but hey... gotta keep pluggin away. That's enough of that.

grr...
Saturday, 07 August 2004 05:39:58

Okay... Sometimes being the only one is cool... you don't have to woory about anyone else or follow anybody's rules... but sometimes it sucks! Sometimes I feel like the only serious (as in obsessed) Buffy/ANGEL/Firefly fan in Tucson... It's just irksome... okay, I'm done...

Not so Shiny moments in life
Saturday, 07 August 2004 10:21:04

THis hAs been oNe of thosE wEEks. If you don't like to read depressing blogs just ignore this one.... I just felt the need to write it all down. My grandpa died on Sunday. Happens all the time everywhere right?... sick, hurting people die. I guess he hadn't really been "living" per se for the last few years. He went from an active, never-slow-down-for-a-minute, a world war II hero,a tree hugging... nature loving, wood crafting, just plain wonderful man to being stuck. Stuck with needles, stuck in a chair watching the history channel and trying to sleep through the pain of knowing he had to rely on others for nearly everything. I have never really been that close to this side of my family, I always let issues with another member of it keep me away. Not that I can blame anyone else, it was all my doing, my decision to stay away as much as I could. I just can't wrap my brain around his sudden goneness... how can someone be there and then not. It really shouldn't be so hard, I saw it coming, my grandma even admitted that she knew deep inside his last days were coming for some time now. Now she's alone. Now she has ramble about the house that he planned out and built himself brick by brick. She said at the wake the morticians made him look so good, like he did five or so years ago before, she just wished he could come home. I wish that too. I wish I knew how to talk to her. I wish I could do more, say more between the awkward small talk and silence. I just kept getting lost in my own head, trying to remember him how he was when I was a little girl. He knew everything! He always took me on walks through the forest of their backyard to point out all the plants, trees, and animal tracks. Let me watch him hard at work at his sawmill till I got scared of the big noise and ran to the house in tears... no matter how much he reassured me he wouldn't hurt himself with the those huge teeth on the saw. When I was 9 or so he made me my very own desk complete with cubby holes and hidden slots in the drawers. I never could fathom how someone could make such beautiful furniture and things with their hands. There is so much more but for some reason I can't remember it all... so many years of him that I can't unlock. At the funeral they folded a flag and handed it to my grandma, played Taps, and a gun salute. The minister talked, although I don't think anyone was listening. After that everyone milled around talking... "sure is a shame... sorry for your loss... at least he is at peace..." I know funerals are all about ceremony and tradition, but it seemed everyone kind of forgets that their actually for the living. I just don't want to forget. I don't want time to heal. I just want to be five again... sitting on grandpa's lap while he rubs my back till I fall asleep.

Con-version 2004: Day 1
Sunday, 08 August 2004 08:41:38

Okay, so Con-version ain't exactly something big like Comic-Con, but I actually got to meet some other Browncoats so I think it's damn shiny. I didn't spend the whole day there, I was solely interested in the Firefly Shindig, but it was well worth the $32 I paid for the weekend. So the day started off at 7:30 in the morning as I had to catch the train to the downtown. When I finally got to the hotel at 9:30, registration wasn't set up so I was late for my first session. Not that it matter since it wasn't any good... After lunch I was off to IFWA's (don't ask me what it stands for since I don't know) Once More With Feeling thing. I think the best way to describe it is a sing along. They handed out the lyrics to people, not that many joined in. IFWA's people sung the characters' parts and they had a band to play the music. For people who aren't professional singers, it wasn't half bad; they probably sounded better than me. My only gripe with the performance was the lady who was doing the narrating between songs. She kept pronouncing Anya's name wrong. En-ya rather than Ahn-ya. Yes, that's rather picky of me but she should be thankful she didn't mispronounce Giles. I would have decked her... So I got lazy after the Buffy Musical and went home to eat. My friend and I headed back to Con-version around 8:00 pm. The Firefly Shindig was definitely the highlight of my night. I didn't think that there were other Browncoats in the city but I was proven wrong when I got inside the room. There weren't that many of us, but there were plenty more people than I expected. I even got to meet Saint Jayne from our very own posting board. The night was basically a big DVD fest. Got through Jaynestown and Our Mrs. Renyolds before the hotel staff kicked us out of the room. But it was great before that. When The Hero of Canton started to play, everyone was singing along, even if they didn't know the lyrics. Of course, we all sang along to the theme song. It was so great seeing our Big Damn Heroes on a slightly larger screen; it was almost like I was watching the movie. How many days left until April? There was also a raffle with a bunch of prizes, including a couple of signed photos from cast members, DVD sets, and a custom Mal figurine. I curse you Saint Jayne for winning Summer. At least an autographed picture of her anyway. Of course, I shouldn't be one to complain since I won the trivia contest. Was apparently the only one who got all of the questions right and won a parasol for my brain knowledge. Doesn't look like Kaylee's but I'm probably still bringing it to the BDM. It was all for a good cause anyway. Plus I swiped a handful of Blue Sun stickers and a Firefly golf tee that they were handing out. So that was my wanna-be Comic-Con day. I may have even gotten a photo for the official movie board's Comic-Con challenge so here's to a possible 500 points. Tomorrow's the last day of Con-version and the Firefly discussion panel. More on that later.

Con-version 2004: Day 2
Monday, 09 August 2004 00:55:57

Firefly discussion day turned more into listen to one Firefly fan rant happily about the show. A couple of other people got their say too, but the one fan just kept on talking. There wasn't really a point to the discussion; we sorta just hopped from one topic to the other, talking about the movie and what made the show so great. At one point we kinda wandered into Buffy and practically ruined the ending of the show for one lady who was still working on watching all of the DVDs. The one thing that bothered me was the way the happily ranting fan kept mentioning the official board. For whatever reason I just couldn't care. I like it here; I don't care if none of the actors visits this site daily or that Joss or Chris don't post messages to the fans here. I mean, should that really matter? Plus happily ranting fan called FFF.net "stodgy" last night. Whatever, dude. :disappointed: All in all, it was nice to spend more time with fellow Browncoats. There was unanimous agreement among all the female fans that there should be more "Captain No Pants" in the movie. Mention was also made of how the characters are actual people and not cardboard cut outs and I totally agree that's what makes Firefly such a great concept. The show may have been labelled a sci-fi western, but there was little focus on the science part. Sigh. How many days left? And an interesting concept was brought up. When Star Wars Episode III comes out, buy a ticket for Serenity and just sneak in to Star Wars. Hey, I'm just planning to sneak in food like Nathan told me to.

I have so much to say. But I need to gather my thoughts more. Should I go back and attempt to relay the foundation. I am conflicted. Part of me feels as if there is no real point, at this junction. I should gather my thoughts. I love this site. I love the people. I love it when it's down. It's amazing to me how much of a staple this world has become to me. Although I disagree with with many of the "political" views expressed herewithin, I do find the consanguinity more than just appealing. Being an only child has taught me to value friendships in whatever capacity they are given. I have been blessed with this site and those that frequent it. Thank you. Thank all of you. Whether you know it your not you have touched my life and for that I am eternally grateful. And one day I will give back with more than just words. In adoration Haslinger

1st Blog
Wednesday, 11 August 2004 01:03:13

Okay then. This is my first time posting, or blogging I guess, on this site. I registered on this site awhile back, but forgot I was registered plus I haven't been using a computer for about four or five months. Don't ask. I am big fan of Firefly! Am dragging everyone I know to it the day the movie opens! Heck, I'll even stop and ask complete strangers if they want to go! Hope I can have some fun times on this board. Til later.

1st Blog, Wish It Were For Different Reason
Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:49:09

I visit this site several times in a usual day. Right now I do not have internet access at home, so I am always at work when I visit with all of you good people. I manage a small business. I'm usually by myself and when I'm not helping customers I tend to surf the net. I tell you all of this because just a few days ago I was afraid that my life was going to end just feet away from my monitor that still had fireflyfans.net still displayed. This past saturday (we open half a day) about 11AM I was about to go get lunch, business was slow so I figured I would break the monotony and have an early lunch. So there I am sitting at my desk surfing this site about to go to lunch. I get up to run to the bathroom real quick before I left, and I hear the chime go off on the front office door. I come back in, ask the man if I can help him, and he responds by brandishing a 9mm handgun and demanding all my money. That's the image I cannot get out of my mind. The one where I see him standing there, I see his right hand slowly moving toward his left hip and I know what is about to happen but was helpless to stop it because he was not moving slowly like he does in my mind. The fact is he was upon me before I could hardly even react. Long story not quite as long, I give him all the store's money then I give him all of my money, then he gets the security tape, and he tells me to go to the very back room and lay face down on the floor. This is the second moment that stands out in my mind. When he ordered me to go to the back and lay down FACE FIRST, I knew it was over. I just had a feeling that I was done for, so I pleaded for my life. Begging for my life, it's a strange new sensation that I'm neither proud of or care to ever experience again. Well, obviously since I'm typing this to you now, you know he did not pull the trigger. He handcuffed me behind my back and maced the hell out of me. I could not see anything, my hands were useless, but I was able to get the sink faucet to turn on with my nose. So after about 10 or 15 minutes of holding my face under the water I was able to see a little bit. I was still very scared because I had no way to tell if he was still in the store, but I had to do something. Once I could see again I slowly checked the office to make sure no one was in the store. It was empty, but there was a piece of mail on my desk that had not been there before. The mailman had come in while I was writhing around in the back, but we did not hear each other. I finally got out and had someone call the cops. I was in those cuffs about 45minutes. All in all not the best weekend I've ever had. This is my first day back at work. I like having this online community to share with, epecially now since I was afraid that I would never be able to log on here again much less enjoy the BDM next april with all my fellow Browncoats. I will end here by saying that this is one Browncoat that is really happy to be here with you good people. Be Safe.

I just saw "I, Robot" and thought it rocked!!!

All she wants to do is dance, dance...
Friday, 13 August 2004 22:41:08

So I actually danced last night. It was great. Because I can actually dance, a trait not usually observed in the 6'3" 250+ crowd. But that's my little secret. Big white lug can dance. Be afraid.

Jayne Cobb - Piece of work
Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:17:28

I was gonna post this on the message board, but figured it was just too much a me thing for others to get as I intended. I mean, who could find any sort of comparison between Jimmy Buffett and Firefly? Well, prob more than a few on here  ================================================= Just how in the world does one go from a Jimmy Buffett song to thinking of Jayne Cobb? Easy! ( for me, that is ) Just by listening to the lyrics of one of Jimmy's latest song.. Piece of work. Don't know what it was about that tune, but its bracy (it features Toby Keith )gritty tone just spoke to me... 'Jayne'. I'm a piece of work I'm an angels fiend Bathed in lavender and gasoline Scared brave, shallow in an ink black well Lightly browned in the fires of hell Wicked, holy, full on fake *Best known for my big mistake I'm zen wise, peaceful, gone berserk Good God almighty, What a piece of work * Big mistake? 1st thing I thought of when I heard this was - Ariel. Yeah Jayne, you got stupid. I'm a piece of work, I'm a love sick boy Cloth cap, caviar, and corduroy *All over the map, justa lost in space With a filthy mind and a choirboy's face Heels up, head down, straight on through Watch out woman, I'm a get to you I'm a gladiator with a mind to irk I'm a see you later, I'm a piece of work. *Jayne and them do get about a good bit. Lost in space, not knowing where they'll end up next, as the jobs take them here or there.

Music and Star Wars
Saturday, 14 August 2004 18:41:28

I’m listening to my Star Wars soundtrack that I rediscovered recently under a stack of papers that’s been cluttering my desk for the past month. Damn, John Williams is good! All of his music is excellent, but he really did a remarkable job on the Original Trilogy soundtrack. He captures the emotions of the scenes so beautifully. Not just anyone could see an ugly, little, green puppet and create the amazing ‘Yoda’s Theme.’ Few soundtrack conductors can spawn such moving pieces, though Howard Shore came close in the FotR CD, as have a handful of others. For some reason, every now and then my music obsession with rear it’s ugly head and force me to spend the next few days glued to my walkman. While I don’t consider myself a music maker of any sort (that would require both skill and talent), I do have a rather strong - and perhaps unhealthy - addiction to it. At this moment, I have about five different songs playing in my head, and half a dozen different song fic plot bunnies fighting for attention. To listen or not to listen, that is the question. A day without music is like a day without sunshine: dark, depressing, and leaving me very pale.

Unrequited
Sunday, 15 August 2004 10:57:43

BLEEP BLEEP BLEEP!!!!!!!!! who ever invented the alarm clock should be hanged by their pinky toes on a raw steak covered, chain above a barely out of reach shark tank. actually, i suppose i cant blame the alarm-making fools of the world. whoever decided that work should begin before 5 am or anytime in the middle of the freakin' night should be ... well, i don't know what, but somethin' really bad should happen to 'em. i am soooooooooooooooooooooo tired. between jobs and one very uncomfortable like mattress i think i have managed about 3 hours of sleep in the last 48ish hours. for goddess sake i love sleep! just turns out sleep doesn't love me back. we have what you might call an unrequited relationship... anyone have a nice frying pan they can bash over my head so i can get in a little nap?

Feds bust illegal cricket fight club.
Monday, 16 August 2004 22:51:03

Yeah, I can see this happening in the Firefly universe.
HK feds bust illegal cricket fighting ring By Lester Haines Published Monday 16th August 2004 11:55 GMT Hong Kong punters with a penchant for the unusual will have to get their gambling jollies without the participation of giant insects after local police busted an illegal cricket fighting syndicate. Feds slapped the cuffs on 115 miscreants at what was apparently a sort of entomological Fight Club between belligerent crickets from Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou. The raid - in Kowloon's Monkok district - netted 200 crickets, $HK8,000 (around $1,000), "small baskets that were used to house the insects and bamboo sticks used to agitate them". Monkok police inspector Angus Yeung Fu-yin explained that while gambling on dogfights and clashes between birds is commonplace, "Gambling of this type is very rare here although it was very popular in the old days, so we were very surprised when we first heard about it." The South China Morning Post points out that the venerable sport of cricket fighting "can be traced back to the Tang dynasty of 618-907 and had long been confined to aristocrats, senior officials and wealthy merchants. Winning brought honour while losing meant shame". The paper adds that cricket coaches hunt down the stroppiest insects and devote much time and energy turning them into six-legged Mike Tysons. A champion cricket can secure up two thousand dollars for a KO and transfer fee of 20,000 yuan ($2,600). Mercifully, police confirmed that the busted betters did not have any known connections to organised crime. Presumably, the triads are too busy organising dogfights where a winning pooch can scamper off with a $HK1,000,000 (about $128,000) purse. ®
The Sci Fi Channel, Crazy or Clouded?
Tuesday, 17 August 2004 01:30:39

Don’t get me wrong now, I subscribe to the Channel, I buy the magazine, and I watch some of the shows. Even so, I’ll be one of the first to admit Sci Fi has really gone down hill over the last few years. First Wave, The Invisible Man, Farscape, those are just a few of the shows that have seen Skiffy’s ax. The first two I could live with. I really liked them, but I wasn’t completely broken hearted when they went off the air. Farscape, however, was going too far. Farscape is one of the best shows Sci Fi television has to offer. It’s got SFX that blow your mind; great actors, brilliant writers, and make up and set designers that put ST to shame. Canceling FS was one of the worst moves Skiffy could have made. I might have been able to curb some of the anger caused by the cancelation if Sci Fi had given me something equally as amazing to fill the void. Instead, what do I get? Andromeda, a show that’s been going steadily down hill since season two. Stargate: Atlantis which may or may not prove to be worthy of it’s namesake. All of this topped off by a string of genetically engineered killer bug made for TV movies that seem to consist of the same five cookie cutter characters and poorly constructed foam bugs refilmed over and over again. (Let’s not forget Sci Fi’s foray into the reality TV world with shows such as ‘Scare Tactics’ and ‘Mad, Mad House.’) I’m sick of watching B movies and shows that leave me feeling like something's missing. One of the things that’s made science fiction and fantasy television so great is that it forces you to think. It makes you look at possibilities you’ve never considered before. It makes you consider the answers to questions you’ve never asked. I’m tried of being force fed mindless television. I’m tired of recycled plot lines, two dimensional characters, and contrived tech. I want more shows like Farscape and Firefly. Television that grips you and drags you into it’s world kicking and screaming. That’s what makes people watch. That’s what heightens their curiosity and pulls them into a show. The Sci Fi Channel used to understand this. They used to see what the fans wanted and give it to them, unlike so many other TV stations out there. That’s why I have to wonder, have they gone crazy or has soaring popularity clouded their thinking? I know I'm ranting, but I've spent all day browsing through Farscape web sites, mourning for my canceled show.

Already Missing Friends but Savoring a New Stride
Tuesday, 17 August 2004 03:20:27

46 days left... Happy Monday!

my computer will not let me post a new thread! GRR!!
Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:14:54

I was going through the blogs and new threads when I saw one about a Firefly comic. If Fox and Universal won't let a Firefly TV series out, is it possiable for a cartoon series with the voices from the real Cast? The could have everything done in computer anni or maybe (judging but some of the wonderful good fan art I've seen) they could have cartoonist? I want Firefly back on TV!

Is this a Blog?
Tuesday, 17 August 2004 22:33:37

A new word to me, "Blog". I'd guess it's just musings, a journal entry of sorts. A public journal seems a bit awkward. Most, I'd say, write in a journal to try to attain a deeper meaning. They organize their thoughts and banish them from their head. Once the surface thoughts are spent the more reliable thoughts from intuition come to the surface. I'd further speculate that people post on forums to exchange ideas. Some perform, others just want to be heard and still others have questions. The composition of these writings have an audience in mind. They are not usually for the self, but for the benefit of others. So where does that leave blogs? Those with a mixture of courage and indifference to the opinions of others this will be another forum for journal entries. It takes a lot to show 'the real me' for those of us who tend toward the introspective. I guess after writing down the surface thoughts and seeing what dwells beneth I discover this entry has wandered far deeper than I expected. Further, I have no better ability to articulate 'what is a blog' however my own impression of what a blog should be has never the less been defined. Wacky. This is a far cry from my usual goof-ball self, others may begin to take me seriously if I keep this up. Musn't have that. Clear skys, DM

Thought for the Day
Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:41:41

Usually I get all ... wordy when writing these things, but then a month passed and I had nothing to say. Finding out you've inadvertendly ticked off Alan Tudyk will do that to a guy. Anyway, here's a quick Thought for the Day: Thinking about "Firefly," I realize there really ARE no other ways colonists will eventually live on new planets, except by dumping them there and making them farm. It's pretty expensive to haul raw materials for an Apartment Complex across the galaxy, I'd wager. Life will be hard, and will very much resemble early colonists of the Americas, or Australia, or any other land colonized in historical times. Ergo, the people who are hatin' on "Firefly," who think horses in the future are stupid, or think six-shooters in 2517 a.d. are ridiculous.............. Those people are actually with the Alliance, and are not to be trusted. Pass it on.

Rainy Days

It's raining outside. Got me to thinking. Did we ever see any rain on Firefly? :stupid: Ian

So I finally got around to seeing The Village...
Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:33:34

I guess it was okay. The only problem with going to see a M. Night Shyamalan movie is that you're expecting the big twist so you spend the whole hour and a half waiting for it to happen. Or you just start to over analyze everything, like my friend did for the first half of the movie. But I have to admit I was actually freaked out. There were points where I was like "Okay, it's coming towards me, it's broad daylight, so why am I cringing?" When I first saw The Sixth Sense the only time I jumped was when a cop lit a flare towards the end of the movie. I kid you not. It caught me off guard more than the kid with the back of his head blown off. I don't know what made The Village so different. With the way the shots are set up, you know something is suddenly going to appear, you just don't know what. I also made the mistake of letting my friend hold the popcorn during some of those scenes; I'm not sure how much popcorn ended up on the floor before I took the bag back. Oh, and regarding "the twist":
Or rather, "twists", since there were two. I sorta suspected the first one where we find out the creatures are made up by the elders so people don't want to leave the village. There was definitely a whole "they're all hiding something" vibe. Which leads into the next twist which I totally didn't see. When Walker opened that chest and pulled out that photo, the first thought to pop into my head was "They're from the future?" Then I actually listened to what the characters were saying and I finally got it. Not a colony in the 1800s but just a village set in a modern wildlife preserve. Apparently my friend guessed the twist during the movie. I figured something didn't feel right when one of the elders started talking about her dead sister. So if her sister wasn't killed in the village then it must have happened before she came to the colony, right?. If that's the case, how come this woman doesn't have an accent? I watched Colonial House, I know how things work. Plus there was the matter of M. Night Shyamalan's cameo. How was he going to work himself in?
Anyway... I really liked the character of Ivy. A strong female charater. No wonder I liked her  She's damn resourceful for a blind lady. Joaquin Phoenix's character was useless and boy did William Hurt and Sigourney Weaver have nothing to do. I figure The Village was worth the $10.95 I paid. When I got home afterwards I had to go downstairs and turn my computer off. Turned on all of the lights just to do that. Now if that isn't the sign of a decent horror film then I don't know what is.

Being River Tam
Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:43:11

Just a random thought I had today. River has her good days and her not so good days. She can offer up creepifying facts and segue off into comments on quantem physics. Other days..she can barely get out of bed. I'm thinking .. " hey, don't we ALL go through various stages of lucidity and cloudyness ? " Anyone ? Eh, ok, so it's not to the severe extent that River has,but then we didn't have our brains cut on multiple times by secret Gov't scientist. But the point is, River is someone I think many can relate to, even if they aren't so willing to fess up to it. We, like River, do a balancing act... one moment..we are getting sick in our brothers bed, the next..well, there's no power in the 'verse that can stop us. If I find myself not having the best of days...I can just think of River, and some how work out a smile. Just another, but totally unrelated thought on River. She's the only crew member to NOT be shot. Ain't that somethin? I hope it stays that way with Serenity. ***Correction*** Inara hasn't been shot either. How could I forget HER! But my comment still stands, and I hope Inara AND River both stay clear from being shot or hurt in Serenity.

liking to hear your own voice
Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:48:11

Question. Who in the world speaks just to hear themselves talk? I don't open my mouth unless I have something to say, on the other hand my fingers do an awful lot o'typin' I don't know. Maybe I'm being a hypocrite.

Cooking and the Food Network
Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:40:54

It started off simply enough. I was up late one night, attacked with another bout of insomnia, when I ran across the Food Channel. Correction Food Network. A channel, I discovered, dedicated entirely to food. I had heard of it in passing. Mostly in conversation between my grandmother or great-aunt followed by an engrossing dialogue about Martha Stuart or the latest issue of Good Housekeeping. Consider the context in which I had learned about the channel, I had already decided that it was, obviously, not for me. I am no Martha Stuart. Lace doilies have no place in my home. Four course meals, silk window treatments imported from France, hand-knitted scarves, and wine tastings are foreign concepts to me. At least, that’s what I thought. Finding nothing else on television, and desperate for anything to entertain my sleep deprived brain at two o’clock in the morning, I turned on Food Network. A Cook’s Tour was the program du jour that night. Needless to say, that was when the first sparks came to life. I was puzzled at first by the foul mouthed, chain smoking, New York chef who hosted the show. There he was in the middle of Cambodia, flies swarming around the him all the while he talked about demiglace and osetra caviar. I blame the events that followed on that one show. Naturally, seeing natives in dilapidated shacks whipping up delicious meals peaked my curiosity. As did the sudden revelation that not everyone who enjoyed cooking wore hand-sewn aprons and threw things together in spotless kitchens with matching dish wear. So, I decided to do a little research into this whole cooking phenomenon. It seemed everyone was doing it. Men, women, young people, old people. Obviously, I had missed the bandwagon. Eager to catch up, and recently addicted to shows like Iron Chef and Good Eats, I wasn’t about to let the annoyingly peppy Rachel Ray out cook me! It began with a soup or two, followed by a failed attempt at homemade pasta. I skirted around steak and chicken, slowly making my way into pies and pasties. At last, I worked my way up to baking, which proved to be a success as shown by the three tiered chocolate cake that disappeared in five minutes flat at my aunt’s birthday. Even as I write this, I have a loaf of bread rising on the stove just waiting to be popped into the oven. Have I changed since I discovered The Network? Yes and no. I do have a new found appreciation for four course meals. And I do find myself linger in the whole foods section of the grocery store a little longer than usual, but I don’t expect me to break out the knitting needle or pull out the thread basket to sew up that hem on my favorite skirt. I may spend a lot more time in the kitchen now days, but I haven’t turned into a Stepford Wife. I’m still a punk rock listening, Firefly watching, sci fi junkie. Don’t believe me? That’s alright. I know I haven’t lost it. What ever it is. Why have I written this? To rub people’s noses into my new found cookdom? No. I’ve written this to encourage all of you others who were once perplexed by the whole cooking thing. To let you know that you too can tackle that recipe book that’s been sitting on your book shelve for the last three years collecting dust. To let you know it’s alright to embrace the cooking monster inside of you that’s been begging to get a hold of that potato ricer. I’m no expert in the kitchen, but I sure have a lot of fun getting my hands dirty. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think Emeril just came on.

Friday, 20 August 2004 02:17:30

I am nervous about the movie. I have faith in Joss and his crew and cast. I love the series and have converted many to the cause. I wait impatiently. I think I may someday buy Nathan Fillion a beer.

The journey of 1000 words begins with the 1st...
Friday, 20 August 2004 05:34:05

Okay so here's a rundown of things that have happened and will happen... have happened -bros started school, been taking youngest to school in the morning -paid for my 1st semester tuition... -dad put fear of god into me by threatening to kick out and cut off if I get below a B in any class... how's that for pressure -saw "Collateral"... damn! -best friend came back from CA... have yet to see her... -paid for my books... I miss free public education -colored my hair... it looks the same... -watched a 3 hour block of TV everyday beginning at noon with back to back "Queer Eye For the Straight Guy" eps then ANGEL will happen -start college -Party with my two bestest buds before we must succumb to growing up -set VCR for TV shows... yes, my life does tend to revolve around the box -"Dead Zone" and "Monk", season finales... -hang out with my other friends because we can never seem to get together... -apply at local Olive Garden (don't ask...) Okay now the reason for the title for this blog entry is because during an ep of "Queer Eye" I saw this little tag for a deal called "Sit:Com" I went on the website and found out about this like contest they're having on the BRAVO network for a sitcom script, so I started thinking of ideas for sitcoms and have discovered it's pretty damn hard to create a show (huh, who knew?)... well I'm down to two ideas that I think have some merit into turning out a decent funny pilot script... Problem is, I'm having trouble just beginning to write for them... nice thime to get Writer's Block, eh? Oh well... just gotta buckle down and get ready for some hardcore brainstorming...

Woo!
Saturday, 21 August 2004 03:57:52

Hubby's Hospital Adventure
Sunday, 22 August 2004 04:52:42

Hello, As you may have heard by now, I took my husband (Meoriar) to the ER on Thursday night for some abdominal pain and a fever over 100 degrees. He was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and admitted for surgery to remove the offending organ. He went into surgery yesterday (Friday) morning at 7:30 and came through very well. The surgery was done by laproscope, so it was much less invasive and will heal much more quickly. Actually, I was able to bring him home today, and he is resting and recovering better than expected already. He's on some pretty hefty antibiotics and pain relievers, but is doing well. He should be out and about again quite soon. To those of you who found out about it through strange and unusual means (i.e., I didn't call you), I apologize. I spent Thursday evening getting Meoriar to the ER and then getting him admitted and ended up not going to be at all Thursday night, since his surgery was scheduled so early. I spent all day Friday keeping his brother and sister informed and cancelling plans that he and I had for the weekend - since I didn't know when he'd be coming home - between bouts of being present for him and waiting for the doc to show up and give us the post-op run-down. With all this, by the time I actually got home Friday night and had the time (and a couple of brain cells free for e-mail writing), it was incredibly late and the roomies were down for the night, leaving me with no access to my e-mail. (Thank you to Mercury in Retrograde for "helping" me out in the comms department this weekend... *note sarcasm dripping from that last*) To everyone who has offered their love and support, thanks ever so much. (And please keep it coming... he's still got a little ways to go...) My posting/e-mailing/communicating via computer is likely to be highly erratic until he gets a little more settled into a routine and is well on the road to healing, so if you write and don't get response as fast as normal, please bear with me. Thanks again for all your thoughts and well-wishes. ~Astri~

Still no Firefly DVD's @ Target....
Monday, 23 August 2004 22:39:49

I looked, once again, just out of curiosity. Nodda. There was the new Northern Exposure DVD box... looked pretty cool too. But no Firefly. And it wasn't just one day either. I checked back 2 different times. There were various other box sets too. Anyway, I was looking at the Chinese translations and it dawned on me that there's a missing word. From TRASH, when Mal and Inara are discussing the great bobble headed Geisha doll caper, Inara blurts out that Mal is a *petty theif. *Suo SHEE? Near enough w/ out getting up now and verifying it off the DVD. I know, it's probably there, but I looked on that Translation list several times.

I own a computer store! UPDATE!

Those blasted kids....
Tuesday, 24 August 2004 05:20:41

What happens that shapes us? I can see the thousands of tiny strands of fate which comprise the yarn which makes the quilt of our lives. My metaphors are getting weak. So work just sucks. Not the act of working, I am just sadistic enough to like it, but the overall feeling that I am again not where I should be. But where is that? Back to L.A. I hate that place [no offense angelians, i am a southern boy]. Ahhh here come the stereotypes. Focus and Perserverence. I've got to remember my mantra. Focus is gained only by perservering. Perserverence is only obtained through focus. I am too tired to spell check. Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon make me cry. Grumpier Old Men is on the tube. It's sad to think generations will never know their talent, but that comes with age I guess. Looking back at what I know that the younger kids don't. It already happens all the time with music. Nobody knows who Page Hamilton is. All they know of Henry Rollins is he is a stand up comedian and that Black Flag is a pesticide. Of course I know nothing of screamo emo. I just raise my cane in the air and shake it at those darn kids. I had an epiphany the other day. You see my goal in life isn't sucess, wealth, fame, or possessions. All I want is a family. Wife, couple of kids, may be a dog. Point is my entire life has been driven behind the concept of a family. I now know why. I only want what I no longer have. The older I get the less of a family I am. I have just grown up. The joy of birthdays has faded, along with that restless christmas eve, but I get it all back. We all do. That's family. I wrote too much.

Wow, I neglect this awfully.
Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:41:08

So, uh, yeah. My search for a browncoat cotinues. Need a browncoat. Muti wont let me wear blue gloves to the premier, so browncoat it is! Tried to donload the trailer but it timed out :pissed:. And thus ends another blog entry!

Browncoat Uniform
Wednesday, 25 August 2004 03:20:52

So here's the run down: - Army green M41 Army Helmet with various Browncoat logos painted on it - Army green t-shirt - Brown/khaki suspenders - 1:1 scale replica airsoft G36 rifle, black finish - Brown/khaki trousers - Brown suede/leather western style vest  So its not 100% accurate to the show missing the notable [silver finish G36, red vest, fringe shirt, chainmail arm guards]...but hey its an "Inspired By" costume...well either that or I'm lazy. So if you see an asian guy with glasses in that garb, you'll have sighted yourself a browncoat. See ya'll at Dragon-Con

Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:55:43

In anwser to my insane ramblings, my computer wouldn't post a new thread because my computer is sick, it is now getting fixed up in the hospital. Soon I will return to my emails and e-news letters of ElfQuest *sigh* :D on another note, I got one of the locals to borrow my Firefly disk one but he wouldn't watch it. I mean why get my hopes up if you aren't even going to try it. On the plus side I have gotten his sister interested in seeing at least one because of my wild and crazy spacemonkey/firefly/song/qoutes tee-shirts! whahahahaha!!!

Goodbye Mandy

Amanda was a terribly nice little girly. She was inquisitive, trusting and immediately friendly with anyone. I'd see her scooting around the neighborhood with her brother Stevie in tow. Often she'd wave at me from across the street when I'd come home from work. She'd bedevil Matt, the other neighbor kid, something fierce. I always thought that when those two became teenagers their childhood arguments would turn to flirting, then to dating. One day she'd break his heart, she being the more adventurous and more likely to leave town in pursuit of other dreams. Just this spring she helped my wife and I plant flowers in our front porch planters. She thought we were cool even though we are adults. I recall my wife and I discussing having a Harry Potter party for our nieces and the children of our friends. Mandy was to be invited. She went to bed on Monday, excited for school the next day. Too excited? I don't know, it's just hard for me to imagine her excitement caused this. It is still confused, but complications from an asthma attack either led to her stopping breathing or to a heart attack. She's gone now. I guess my feeling is confusion. Monday she was a healthy 10 year old girl. It is unheard of for something to happen this fast. To those reading, sorry for the downer. The Firefly fan site is where I have been spending my free time and interest, it now happens to be where I am trying to organize my thoughts. Real life circumstance has forced its way into my attention. All the dreaming, discussion, excitement and good natured argument that I have found here has been removed from my thoughts. "Normal" will return later, for the moment please accept good wishes from the wellspring of grief. Clear skys

Peacekeeper Wars Trailer at Apple.com!!
Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:30:35

It’s here! It’s really here! I usually check Apple’s trailer section in the vain hope that some unannounced Serenity teaser will be posted, but today I made a special effort to check the site. In fact, I’ve been checking it three and four times an hour since I woke up this morning, waiting for the Farscape: Peacekeeper War trailer to be put up. Needless to say, when I finally saw it, a beautiful PKW ‘movie poster’ icon right up there at the top, I was ecstatic. I’ve seen the little trailer Skiffy execs show on the Sci Fi channel, but this one one blows that out of the water! It’s awesome! When Rockne and Brian said it would blow people’s minds, they weren’t kidding. It looks to be everything I’ve come to expect from Farscape and more. I can’t wait till October! To check the trailer out, go here:

wow, I haven't visited this site in a while, but I thought I'd make a stop today - things have been kinda crazy - what with my job winding down and whatnot, and getting ready to move back home, but I did get the time to sit down and watch a few eps of firefly today. that was fun. takes the mind off things. love it. ok very tired. going to sleep now. Oh, I realized that I had a blog up earlier about searching for other users on firefly. here's the email I got back from Haken about it: You can either look at the current user list:

So that went well.... I hate short relationships. You really don't have anything to complain about, except nothing. What bothers me is the whole, I think i am closer to you than you are to me thing. And that we explored the relationship but friendship is the only thing we found. I don't get it. She didn't even flinch, but hey that's what happens in short relationships. There's no flinching....there's no flinching in dating. I slept well last night. May be it's a sign. My excitement about Dragon Con grows exponentially. I wish that art show wasn't on Sun. so I could stay. It will be nice to step away from this wretched city for a while. It's friday...

ARGH!
Friday, 27 August 2004 15:33:20

I hate feeling worthless and unfortunately I feel that way everyday because of my father (therefor the reason for the title). I know it's dumb to feel like I'm nothing just with how he acts with our dog (I know, I know!) but in comes my insecurities and low self-esteem. I know he loves me but... ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH! I just felt like venting. Sorry.

If I Could Save Time in a Taco...Part the first
Friday, 27 August 2004 22:31:22

There is a school of thought that neo-confabulist thinking is best expressed in pseudo-intellutalized satire. Which simply means, If you don't know what to say, dazzle 'em with bulls*it. That really has absolutely nothing to do with today's blog, but it was a place to start and I always have a problem knowing where to start. I'm wish I was more attentive to this blog, but I can at least claim that this week wasn't my fault. Since Saturday, Rod and I have sequestered ourselves at his parent's cabin east of San Diego in the Los Something-Something National Forest trying to get some work done. This week has been a fantastic example of what makes the great outdoors the third most avoided recreational activity in America. (No phone, no TV, no internet and no hot water for showers...) Actually showering in cold water can be incredibly refreshing once your body releases it's grip on your testicles and you can breathe again. For Rod it was a week to concentrate on our project before he and his wife have to devote most of their waking hours on their new baby girl (arrival in Nov.). For me it was a test to see how well I would adapt to putting my nose to the grindstone without a job to pressure me into it. Still, a week is a long time and with no outside contact, which can be a good learning experience. Boredom forces you to either make up stupid word games or take note of the world around you. Often startling discoveries are,...um, discovered...this way. Revelation: A week in a cabin with a buddy is a true test of friendship. Unlike a romantic relationship where love blinds you to the realities of the person you spend time with, friendship gives you just enough in common to think that you can survive in close quarters with someone who has a whooooole different idea of living than you do. Within a week, you either develop a sense of sympatico with each other or you repeatedly surpress wild urges to eat their heart. Revelation: It takes a minimum of two heaping teaspoonfuls of International Coffee's Swiss Mocha mix to make hot water taste like something other than hot water with a spoonful of dirt for flavoring. (Sub-Revelation: At five teaspoons, you might as well forget the water and spoon it straight into your mouth.) Revelation: You can make just about anything in a large electric skillet except cake. Revelation: There is a secret part of the human brain that has evolved to be smarter than our conscious selves. This is probably why the brain has separated lobes. I know this is hard to follow, so I'll go a little in depth. In years past, I've been able to drink large quantities of alcohol. (Typically in conjunction with some work function where it was expected...) For some reason though, as I've grown older, this recreational activity has come to make less and less sense to me. Let me try and illustrate it another way. When you were six, you were probably told by someone older than you to do something incredibly stupid. (You can submit these to the board here for all to see if you have the need. I'd love to know that I wasn't alone in having a sadistically intelligent older brother..."Bugs taste like chicken!".) Think that this doesn't apply to you? Try this: Place your hand flat on a table. Take a hammer (preferrably the rubber mallet type - as they don't tend to scar) and strike the center of your hand once as hard as you can (more if you have a high threshold for pain). If you found yourself incapable of doing so, then my theory may have validity. If you actually DID perform this act of lunacy, then you're living proof that evolution is a Darwinian process. Anyway, the point is, Rod and I tried to get smashed a couple of times this week. Unfortunately, by the time we'd each made it through a couple of beers, we'd start yawning and eventually head for our respective bunks. (This is the "smart-brain" reminding the body that hangovers aren't fun and acknowledging that there is a sixty foot drop less than a football field length away from the front door. Hence the theory.) FYI,

Blah, blah, Taco...Part the Second or, "What I did on my Summer Vacation."

Where was I...? There was something I wanted to remember from the last post...think,think,think... Ahhh, never mind. I'll just pick a place to start. The unquestioned highlight of the week, aside from not hearing the echoes of work constantly invading my sleep, was "The Reading". For those of you who don't know, Rod and I are trying the ridiculously impossible task of actually producing our own, independent movie. This is not a step we took lightly, nor is it one that we are taking while wearing rose colored glasses. (Yes, we've done small, non-public projects before. No we have no formal training. Everything we've learned, we've learned by studying and trying to think of how to emulate.) We know that, ultimately, it comes down to desire, determination and the willingness to have enough faith in ourselves to dump every last nickle into this project. (That and gathering a group of people who have the same desire and energy and sense of fun that we do.) To that end, we decided to do our first reading with some of the people who may be involved. As this was the first time we'd had it read aloud, Rod was a ball of tension. Tug a little and he would have snapped like Daffy Duck in a room full of rabbits. Strangely I never saw this. He had to tell me later over coffee and breakfast at one in the morning at Denny's. As expected, things were both good and bad. Most of the people involved were reading cold. Only one or two had a copy of the script beforehand. We wanted this if only to get a fresh perspective from people who had no idea what was coming. Unfortunately, this meant that some of the best lines (it's a comedy) weren't read as we envisioned while other lines got laughs we hadn't quite expected. The good news is that everyone gave us a thumbs-up, and had a general up-beat attitude after the reading. We discussed the story from several different directions and got some interesting input. The bad news is that we didn't see wild, out-of-your-seat enthusiasm we had hoped for. (Like the lottery, you don't really expect to win, but you never let go of the "what if...".) So we're on re-writes now and are looking at schedules and pre-production tasks that will go on for the next couple of months. It's a breath-taking journey, both a little surreal and a little frightening. Like Rod told me: in my current job, I'm a go-to guy when customers have a problem with the equipment. If I want to take this leap, I have to be willing to learn how to walk and speak and spell again all for a different world. I try, for the most part, not to think about it. If I dwell on it too long, it looks overwhelming. The funny thing is, in my job, I give training classes to techs and engineers on our equipment. When I start, I always tell them that the machine is only complicated if you try to look at everything at once. But everything can be broken down into one small challenge at a time. 35 days left to a new life...this is going to get reeeealy intersting. Standing Outside the Fire -Garth Brooks

Announcing the triumphant return of Ebonezer!
Saturday, 28 August 2004 02:32:07

Hi. My name is Ebonezer and this is my triumphant return, as if the title didn't give that away. Really, I'm back for good now. Like back to my spend-more-time-on-the-computer-then-is-healthy backness, because school has started again (or will on monday) and we all know that isn't really important, so i'll have much more time to kill. And i have my computer back, thats a handy dandy thing if you wanna spend time on it. So hi!

Announcing PWAP 2 for Dragon-Con 2004
Saturday, 28 August 2004 03:11:51

Officially annoucing Panel Without A Purpose 2. Born out of boredom of the twilight hours of Dragon Con (Monday 1:30am) and the Ingenuity of finding an open panel room with live mics...PWAP drew 20 + attendees to witness and take part in its discussions about nothing in particular as well trivia ( $1 prize for correct answers ). It was also written about in the Duke University Student Newspaper. Hosted by - Token Jackass Token Blackman Token Asian (me!) Token Whiteman Token Female and whatever other "token"s we recruit from the audience [ last years included Highschool History Teacher & Highschool Student ]. So if there's a panel room open with a live mike like last year between 1am - 10am Monday morning ...be sure to drop by for some great twilight entertainment-debate-and story sharing.

Saturday, 28 August 2004 17:12:06

In noticing all the gorgeous artwork here, it occured to me that nobody has done a "wanted" poster. Our BDHs ARE criminals, after all! Tiger, GwenHarker, gojiro, TenthCM, et al... what SAY you?

Firefly 'Ad' at Apple.com

Links for Ripping DVD content for music videos
Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:37:30

I posted this info in a thread, but thought I put in in my Firefly Blog in the hopes that it would be more accessible to people. I use a combination of programs to rip DVD source to my computer, covert it an .avi format, and then import it into a Collection in Windows Movie Maker, which is where I do the actual editing of the music video. So far it's worked really well. The ripping programs is DVD Decrypter -

This is the first day of the last day of the first day of our lives
Monday, 30 August 2004 01:30:08

It’s hard to write in the only coffee shop in town that’s currently open. Sure I could have gone to a Starbucks there’s one littered on just about every corner of the earth, but I am not interested in seeing those people. This town has 4 types of caffienites. The Carpe Diem Crowd comprised mostly of Private college students, wealth Springhillians, ignorant liberals, and downright obnoxious conservatives. Ah the sounds that emanate from that place. Next there’s Satori. Once a record shop, a really great one at that, now reduced to nothing more than a pathetic stoop for music nazi pigeons that so like to frequent. In one day you can watch the same person change musical tastes based on who’s around. They’ll admit to liking trip hop, but god knows not in front of the “Hot Topics brand Punks.” Oh Starbucks. You’re almost as American as America itself, except underneath the environmentally friendly posterior you waste more milk and food than any I’ve ever seen. A girl I dated once works there. She told me never to order a latte. I don’t really know what that means, and frankly I don’t to. ‘nuff said. Finally, there’s the Ugly Mug. The perfect place to retire and shake hands with joe. Free wireless, decent coffee, they’re open till 1am all the time. No crowds. No snobs. The click there generally sticks to them, although on occasion a teen will interrupt the perfect sentence with some sort of pubescent sonic distortion. Big downfall. No outdoor seating—which means no smoking. Starbucks and Carpe are open on Sundays, the others are closed. Therefore, I get to spend the next hour or so sitting at Carpe Diem. NRkangel has the right idea. I keep flashing back to his writings. Why stay? I am at a dead end job, that at first preached the wonders of travel and growth as an artist, but now I am nothing more than Richard Prior in the “Toy”. I don’t hate it. I loathe it. On the other hand I understand the value of work, and the necessity of a paycheck. I can’t afford what little freedom I have if my bondage is financial. I will bide in my time I suppose and wait for the right moment to strike. I will be the Counte of Monte Cristo. Impatience just hangs on my heart and mind. Where do we go from here?

I've had a beautiful thought
Monday, 30 August 2004 01:53:00

I've had a great thought. You know how before every universal movie there's that song thing with clips from Universal movies. One day soon, Serenity is gonna be in that. That makes me feel all warm and funny inside.

Token Celebrities? At PWAP 2 (Dragon-Con 2004)
Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:33:11

Sometimes I can't believe my friends. Their the best and sometimes craziest bunch of guys and gals in the world. Should've expected another unexpected development... "Token Blackman" has got goth folk-rock singer / comdeian / spoken word artist Voltaire interested in the Panel Without A Purpose 2. Not surprised he could actually get in contact with the guy, he got him to drink with him last year. Then there's "Token Jackass". He's in contact with comic scribe Warren Ellis attempting to persuade him with booze and a free form venue to rant to show up. Apparently Ellis's excuse is that Sunday was a bad time, so PWAP V2 is rescheduled for Sunday morning (1am - 10am) at the closet availble open panel room. Trying not to keep my hopes up, I'd be happy as hell if PWAP 2004 was equal to PWAP2003...but damn...Voltaire and possibly Warrn Ellis...damn...

Nonsharing bastards!

If you have bit torrent, SHARE YOUR BLOODY BANDWIDTH. If you're using Kazaa or any other p2p software, SHARE YOUR BLOODY BANDWIDTH! Here's how p2p works. You download from someone else, and they download from you. But this only works if people want to use that program. And no one is going to want to use the program if they CAN'T GET ANY DOWNLOADING BANDWIDTH! So SHARE SOME F***ING BANDWIDTH YOU CHEAP BASTARDS!!! That is all.

Bit Torrent et al.
Tuesday, 31 August 2004 17:21:11

It's very simple. Just open the .torrent file with the BitTorrent software and let it download. If you wish to continue sharing your resources, keep the window open after you're done. The issue in my last rant wasn't directed at you guys, as we all want to share the videos and such here. The issue is a larger in general issue regarding people who hack BitTorrent to not share any bandwidth, or adjust kazaa to not share any bandwidth. Which just sucks.
