cat HELP needed

Okay, never had to introduce one cat to another. It's not going as well as I hoped. So....help? tips? suggestions?
Landry had very good suggestions, but we kinda forgot to talk about what happens AFTER having them sniff each other while both are being held by people. I did that, they sniffed and my cat hissed, she hissed, blah..So day 2, they spend the night apart (geez they're beginning to sound like a married couple ). Now I put her in a carrier, like robinhood suggested. Seems to work 'cos at least they can't fight. Well my big furry beast Nemo (the cat, the cat!) seems more social than I thought. He's lying next to the carrier as we speak (or type and read), but she (less than half his size) is seriously growling and hissing, now what? She even lashed out at him. I don't want to keep them apart for ever, but don't want them fight like..uhm..well like cats I guess.
Does anyone know if this is normal? am I doing it wrong? will they ever get along?....and so on..
