Shiny Offer
Friday, 01 February 2008 18:46:21

I've been approached about authoring a subject specific blog and providing photographic content for it. It sounds awesome! I've been out of the blogging and photo game for too long, my own fault mind you. It'll be great to start publishing and creating again. There's just one thing...what the heck do you charge for this sort of thing? edit: Didn't work out quite how I'd hoped. Maybe it's still possible.

just about moved in

Well, gang, it's been a real chore but I'm just about moved in to my new apartment..I never realized how much stuff one can accumulate in twelve years...hundreds of drawings, books and DVDs..not to mention over fifteen boxes of comics......but I'm getting settled in and trying to get myself accustomed to doing my artwork in a new location...so hang tight I'll be back to my prolific self soon..(I hope) See ya, Mike

Sorry I've been away from the BSR for so long.
Tuesday, 05 February 2008 05:59:09

First of all I want to apologize to everyone for not posting so much lately. Real life has thrown me a curve ball like it does from time to time. New Years evening about eleven o'clock my Mom fell in the den. She was in lots of pain and couldn't walk but wouldn't let me call EMS until the next morning. She insisted on dressing and putting on makeup and lipstick before EMS arrived the next morning and actually apologized to the firemen when they arrived to take her to the ER. I actually had to laugh a bit when the EMT's said that she was smaller than the back pack of equipment that they carted into the house. That began my current four week odyssey of long waits in the ER and hospital rooms, and not knowing if she was going to make it to the next morning because of previous medical complications. And finally hip replacement surgery and transfer to a nursing home for physical therapy. She's doing well and continues to improve a bit every day. She's walking short stretches with a walker and should be home in a few weeks. I visit every night after work and weekends so I don't have too much time for writing, except for late nights when I'm so tired that I can't get to sleep. I read the Firefly fics in the BSR (and Live Journal) and it takes me away from what's going on in my life. I like to think that Meg Reynolds is a bit like my Mom. Both women are tough in their own way, yet devoted to their family and love the place where they live whole heartedly.

As predicted, it didn't happen

Another New Year......
Thursday, 07 February 2008 00:46:28

Without too much sermonizing... I'd like to wish a Happy Chinese New Year to all the shippers and Browncoats out there, and wishes for everyone known and unknown to have a great one! I'd also like to to thank the ones that do know me (you know who you are) for all the support and friendship that has been given so freely...making life bearable is the blessing of having true friends. You all are Shiny! I'd also like a free Tibet, but I ain't gonna hold my breath on that one, and I learned the hard way that one should save the political views for other arenas...so like I said no sermonizing..keep the faith on more Firefly, and keep on Shippin'! Best to all in the verse, Browncoat or Alliance! BBJ-

Updates galore...
Thursday, 07 February 2008 08:27:42

...Well not really galore because my life is really boring but that was just a line to hoik you in  My parents have been in London this week and my brother at his girlfriend's; which basically means I have had to tape everything for them. My dad wanted Torchwood taping, which was really good btw, and John wanted the football doing but his tape ran out before the end aso he'll be happy when he finds that out. My birthday was fun. I went to Newcastle with John, and the two Andrew's and we later met up with Steph, John's Girlfriend. Our day basically consisted of sitting in the pub but I did find the Buffy comics in Forbidden Planet and have now read the first five issues. Here's some photos

Okay, sorry about this, but....

Just can't seem to get the fanfic started,if I was writting it on paper we'd have a forest culled for nothing by now.I should be making a bigger effort but getting lazy in my old age.To much time thinking and procrastinating. When you see some of the stuff here ,tis a little disheartning cos you dont think you can measure up to the level attained here, thats not too say im giving up just yet, after all, im a browncoat, its what we do.

OMG ponies!
Friday, 08 February 2008 17:30:49

I am beyond super duper happy to be back here. For some strange reason, a DNS problem occurred shortly after I posted my firefly fic Watch how I soar (that was on Sunday, October 30, 2005 03:33. I have been linking to it from other archives to promote this site a bit, but I got errors for so long, e-mailed Haken for help (but that probably got stuck in a spam file). Today, just because I felt like it, I tried again and yeeha! Finally I could access the site. I was able to read all the lovely comments on the fic by accessing the google cached pages, but It felt immensely guilty for not being able to thank those wonderful commenters. This Dutch browncoat is back and beyond happy!

The Return of the Eldritch Sandwich, Part Deux
Friday, 08 February 2008 19:06:34

As any of you still paying attention know, I stopped writing Blue Moon in the middle of Episode 6 almost a year ago (oh, yeah, look at the blog entry below this one!) However, a recent re-epiphany regarding the goodness of Firefly and the unexpected featuring of Episode 2 on the latest ep of Tales From the 'Verse has got the muses stirring again. What this means is that I'm coming out of retirement. In the coming weeks, I'm going to finish Episode 6 and, if that works out, the rest of Season 1 and the series at large. I don't know how many people are still paying attention after all this time, but to anyone who is; stay tuned.

How many months??!!
Saturday, 09 February 2008 18:41:58

I've been hibernating. It's the only explanation. But I'm back. And I just found some of my work being critiqued elsewhere on the Net. Weird to read about yourself in the third person. I've been getting up a few noses with my interpretations of character, 'Verse etc. Seems folks would like everything to stay just the same as it was when Joss signed off. Tough. This is my 'Verse now. Finders Keepers. I won't piss in your sandbox, you don't piss in mine. And if you open a door into the AnJLverse, you have only yourself to blame. Anyhow, I've been dusting off some old writing in the Real World, and tidying it up for the Crime Writer's Association Debut Dagger, hence the hiatus. But the deadline is next week. After that, I may sidle back into the BSR. After all, now I've read the criticism, I know what I'm doing to annoy people. So I'm going to do it some more. With bells on. I've missed this place. In fact, I think I'm going to settle down for the evening and watch myself a few good episodes of 'FF'. Get back into the vibe. I've been reading all sorts of new stuff to put into the mix. And I'm getting the 'Northwest Smith' book soon. Maybe it's time to take a break from occult-influenced murder in a world of my own devising and come back to play in this one.

Another Less Than Triumphant Return – Or At Least Visit – To the Fold
Sunday, 10 February 2008 00:04:15

Friends! Browncoats! Fellow disciples of Joss Whedon! Lend me you…eyes, I guess! Been another long gap since I last dropped words around the Blue Sun Room, and for that, I am truly regretful. The 5 months, 2 weeks and 1 day since I last blogged have been filled with lots of action and excitement, joy and sadness, triumphs and failures…along with more than my fair share of near-death experiences, IMO. But hey…what’s a close shave or six in the grand scheme of things? To give everyone a heads-up about how things from before are going now, let me say this: I QUIT MY JOB!!! And part of me regrets it honestly. Why, you might ask, when my previous spiel made mention of constantly being exhausted and sore from uncomfortable job tasks, and being an illegal employee because of my lack of certification and registration? Simple, really: other than my boss, I thought the world of my co-workers and except for the less-than-pleasant parts of the job, I actually had fun meeting with potential and return customers looking for a good deal. My last day as an employee of --- CENSORED --- was Friday, October 5th and it was honestly a bittersweet day. Yeah, I was finally done with a place that probably would have seen me sick, injured or in trouble with the law…but getting honest well-wishes from co-workers and a little party where I was asked to give a short speech made me feel a lot guiltier about my decision to leave. At this moment, my memories are somewhat rose-coloured but I still know why I left…though hearing radio ads in the morning talking about the lot’s success and need for expansion to 2 locations and a larger product base kinda makes me grumpy, since I moved product on a regular basis and often made suggestions for helping to expand the business that were eventually taken up :disappointed: In any case, between October 5th, 2007 and January 11th, 2008, I was unemployed and debating about going back to school to finish my Bachelor’s degree. However, I did finally found a job in the strangest of places: a call centre run by a company called TeleTech Holdings Inc. in London, a city 30 minutes from where I live. They have offices in the States and in the Philippines and they hold the contract for supplying tech support for Verizon’s internet services. Specifically, I am what is designated a VCTS Frontline Agent, or Verizon Consumer Technical Support…basically I am the first line of help when a DSL Internet customer calls in for assistance. I get to spend 8 hours a day – currently working the 7AM to 3:45 shift – taking calls from Verizon customers in areas once served by Bell Atlantic and GTE (aka US Eastern Seaboard and the Southwestern US states that border Mexico). So if anyone has Verizon high-speed internet and needs to call in…you could get me as your agent  If you’re still wondering about my near-death moments comment from earlier in this blog, I was referring to almost falling from a height greater than 6 feet while in my last month of work at the car lot job…and almost killing myself when I lost control of my mom’s SUV on the way to work this past Thursday morning. Seems even 4-wheel drive doesn’t prevent traction loss from black ice patches  I’m OK and all, but it was definitely a hair-raising experience to endure…though I didn’t need my dad telling me that had I been just 100 metres (about 110 yards) farther along the road, I would have slid into a concrete water culvert running under the road rather than a farmer’s field bordered by bushes. I guess the point of this little rant/blog/chat is to say “I’m still here!” and re-affirm my obsession with Firefly and Serenity. That and to hopefully enlighten curious parties as to why my cheerleading efforts have been seriously curtailed from previous levels to the odd beta job. Working the hours I do are not conducive towards having oodles of conscious leisure time…. BlueEyedBrigadier

The Firefly Love
Monday, 11 February 2008 11:52:50

Today, on the IMDb Boards, I saw peeps were asking about what is so special about Firefly. Well, I resolved to be bold, and told em. :) I gathered several parts of some earlier posts I made here and compiled the total package. Since it's pretty much a re-run, far as this community is concerned, it seemed inappropriate to just pester folks with it on a regular thread. But I figured, for my own blog, it might actually be a cute idea to have it spelled out once, all put together, why I love Firefly so much. I reckon it never hurts to shine the Firefly Light as far and wide as civilization will take it. :) --------------- Okay, it's all air through the engine now, as the show is over, but since peeps asked, I will try and explain why Firefly is so great. Everything, in the narrow sense, revolves around saving River; and, in the broader sense, about folks who do for each other and ain't always looking for the advantage. Set against a juxtapositioned Alliance, Serenity and crew, in a manner of speaking, are their own little flying micro-kosmos, Man's last best hope for, erm, hope. Firefly is probably the greatest love story ever told! Recall with me, if you will, Hamlet's feigned love for Ophelia at her funeral: "I loved Ophelia: forty thousand brothers could not, with all their quantity of love, make up my sum." No; then take Simon Tam! The boy spent his entire fortune developing the contacts to infiltrate a secret military facility to free his beloved "mei-mei" (a Chinese term of endearment; it means "little sister"). Gave up a brilliant future in medicine as well. "Have you looked at this scan carefully, Doctor? At his face. It's love, in point of fact." To me, the whole River persona, and her innocence, and a whole crew recognizing that innocence, and willing to protect it, is a huge part of why I love Firefly so much. Let's say, for the limited scope of this post, that there are only two loves: love, and the stuff surrounding making love. I think the magic which is Firefly is seated in being the opposite of pretty much everything else in Hollywood: it's about love, and not the making love. The former is about having deep, tender, ineffable feelings of affection for people, and letting those feelings be real enough to do right by your teenage crew member, even if you don't figure the percentage. Or even if it costs you. Haven. Mal, mostly to himself, "I had an out. Hell, I had every reason in the 'Verse to leave her lay and haul anchor." Upon which Book utters the truest words ever offered a human soul in this crap-hill 'Verse: "It's not your way, Mal." Mal chooses not to abandon River. Jayne's question was most poignant: "In earnest, Mal, why'd you bring her back on?" A man learns all the details of a situation like River's, well then he has a choice. But Mal would say, "I don't believe he does." That's Firefly. The Firefly love is a most elusive and precious quality, though. So elusive even, I've argued on occasion, that it escapes many. Seriously. I've personally witnessed folks who were totally awestruck by Firefly, yet unable to express why. The essence of real love, captured so brilliantly in Firefly, is so rare, that while it may vibrantly resonate with the core of people's soul, often, on a more conscious level, the WHY of their excitement eludes them. They just know they love it. And want more! The opposite is true, too: if you don't 'get' the Firefly love, it will probably just look like a silly "cowboys in space" thingy to you. Your loss. So, you ask, is it all about sacrifice then? Only on a very superficial level, I'd say. River: "You gave up everything to find me, and you found me broken. It's hard for you. You gave up everything you had." Beautiful, for sure. But Simon has glanced at Love Bare! His answer is as perplexing as it awesome: "Mei-mei, everything I have is right here." Tell me you didn't cry! This is why I fell in love with Firefly: because of the story arc between Simon and River (and all the expanse in-between, so effortlessly covered by selfle

Shinin' the Light of the

So there I is at the L.A. Chinatown New Year's Festival co-manning the Islam book stall thang and practicing my restaurant-quality Chinese whenever possible, and the guy in the next booth -- college kid -- says he has to do a 7-pg paper on the Iraq war and wants some info on the Islam angle, etc. No problem. Plus he can read our books in Chinese which is shiny and jealous-invoking. So after some conversating, I give him my business card with email and websites, plus on the back I write the website for this fine site with the instruct to go watch "Firefly" -- he might like it cuz they cuss in Chinese. So who knows... might have us a potential convert to the 76th's ranks. Stay Shiny & Keep Flying.

My brush with a F*x employee
Wednesday, 13 February 2008 01:09:15

Many of you know that I am a film student and trying to break into the biz. And on occasion, I am able to attend industry functions. Today, I went to a memorial service for a dear friend, and I discovered that a mutual acquaintance of the departed now works for 2**h C*****y F*x! She's a low ranking officer over technologies. She was in college when Firefly was canceled, so there is no blaming her for that. I wanted to ask why her boss's bosses keep canceling such good shows, but it was not the time nor place for it. Though, I don't think I'll ever bother to ask her if I ever meet her again. It's pretty unprofessional and unbecoming. But, I still wanted to!

I'm on TV with Princess Vespa!!
Wednesday, 13 February 2008 03:28:15

The TV show that I have yet to name, but I did extra work was "One Tree Hill". And, I was also on the episode that aired tonight. While I was watching it, I was also on the phone with my dad who was watching it at the same time at home. When Sophia Bush's character's mom came on TV, my dad reconized her, but couldn't place where he had seen her. So, I hopped into imdb.com and looked her up. The actress's name is Daphne Zuniga, and she played Princess Vespa in Spaceballs!! AHHHHH!!! How could my geekdar miss that when I was on set? HOW?!

Call me a Firefly dreamer.....
Thursday, 14 February 2008 22:44:20

w00t Hill for sleep deprivation - makes me all creative in the brain pan. Makes me poetical, and judging by last night, inspires Firefly dreams out the ears. No River last night, sadly. But almost as good: I was Mal (yeh, big shock there, right?) and I was standing on Serenity's bridge, looking across a plain, slightly hilly and treesy landscape. On the other side of this scape, I was staring at a ridiculously huge space battleship that bore an uncanny resemblance to the World War II battleship Yamato. Plot bunny ftw. I've thought of an ending for my book all over again.... Oh, and Happy Singles Awareness Day to all hands.

Monty's flying circus
Friday, 15 February 2008 11:48:58

deleted scene from Uriah's Heap “Welcome aboard!” Monty Reynolds roared jovially from the bulkhead as the dandified and ragged members of the Solar Circus trooped into the loading bay. Various members of Monty’s crew watched with eager faces – noting the finery, the equipment, the strongmen, the tattooed women. “Thank you Suh!” came back the reply in a broad theatrical voice. “It’s a fine ship you’re having – and we’re glad of it!” The voice belonged to a stout figure in a patchwork frockcoat clashing noticeably with the wild red of his beard. “And you’d be?” “Why Suh, I’m nuthin if not Jefferson Feng ”, and he bowed formally, “romantic, explorer, purveyor of fine remedies and medication and manager of this circus. And - speaking Suh, as a man as wears a hair suit himself - may I be bold enough to complement you on that fine beard of yours.” Monty stuck his chin out proudly. “And mine to you”, he added politely. “Hell, that aint but lambs wool on the fence!” A new and aggrieved sounding voice cut in – and Feng found himself bowled suddenly sideways by the burly form of Ligea the bearded lady who stood firm to stare at Reynolds. Monty was taken aback – and – gorram it if a blush didn’t start to lustre up his cheeks. “THIS is a real beard!” exclaimed the woman. HHMMPH! “Mighty indeed”, Monty murmured hoarsely. Ligea grinned, slapping the leathered trouser of her thigh “takes one to know one Mr Monty – and this…” she indicated Feng, “aint one to know much of anything.” Feng looked peeved – and Monty was glad to get back to business. “Ah,” he said. “So, not the owner then?” Feng looked crestfallen. “Alas I cannot claim that honour.” Monty nodded. “Because the owner would be…?” “That’d be me!” Another strong voice called out – and this time proving to be from the disconcertingly tiny form of Max the Mighty Midget MC, held aloft by one of the strongmen. “Welcome aboard the Madagascar.” “Pleasure Sir!” Max jumped down from his perch and forward rolled, coming upright with a twirl of his top hat. Lemuel Samms found himself clapping involuntarily and Monty could feel the eyes of his crew – and the desire therein. “Well, Max,” he bellowed, “this place big enough for a show?” Max nodded “Of course Captain – we keep our promises – and we aint never been shy of working a passage.” Monty smiled. “Well then, there’s more’n a few of my lads keen enough for that.” “Aye Sir!” yelled one of his crew, lugging a heavy chest under the icy glare of a woman he took to be a fortune-teller of some sort. Jefferson Feng decided to reassert himself and coughed with an elaborate discreetness heard by all. “And a fine show it’ll be – especially seeing as us poor circus souls been seeking transport for, well, an age it certainly does seem, and if a poor circus can bring such resplendent folks pleasure? Well that’s all to the good and worth the price.” He smiled up at Monty. Monty smiled back. “Well we always like a good display – you ever seen gizzards hanging from a yard arm? That can be mighty entertaining!” Feng stopped smiling then. Monty guffawed and beckoned to Max. “Reckon I can provide you and the circus folk with more than passage – we got a secure base where you can take any rest you need, might even find space enough there to pitch up proper and for time.” Legia flashed a look. “Well, uh, little whiles anyway”, Monty corrected. The M.C. looked impressed. “That’s an intriguing notion Captain Reynolds,” he bounded up the spiral stairwell three steps at once, to go talk up some trade. “Captain, uh, y’say, uh, Reynolds?” queried Feng. “That’d be me”, Monty affirmed, “That mean something to you?” But Jefferson Feng had already vanished completely into the circus crowd. .................................

No More Provisional license!

I got notification yesterday, I am officially a FULLY licensed driver in the United States of America! I can't get a new license until mine expires, so, the license will still say provisional until 2011. Oh well, I guess I can live with that for three more years.

just watched'serenity' again last night. i remember when it first showed in theatres. i wasn't familiar with any of the actors, but i'm a big sci-fi/fantasy fan and wouldn't miss it. there's just not that much sci-fi being put out. loved it! i kept turning to my companions asking 'who are these people? where did this come from?' in a dazed and happy voice. then some friends told me about 'firefly'. haven't had tv for 6 yrs or so (didn't have electricity with which to run the thing!. well, recently that changed. so i've finally had the opportunity to watch the 'firefly' series on dvd. what a delight! the acting is top-notch, the special effects are good, the setting is believable and well-conceived, the people are folk that most of us can relate to without being too predictable, and the writing is amazing: intelligent and very funny. very few films/shows make me laugh out loud like this one. the outtakes (a particular fetish of mine) for the movie had me giggling like an idiot- a very happy idiot. apparently i'm not alone in my ardent -if belated- admiration. the story behind this quirky sci-fi has only added to it's charm for me and i'm sorry i wasn't in the mix when it was all going down. it is a rare and beautiful thing for story telling to touch so many in the way this has. as a writer and performer- in various medium and genre- i'm thrilled to see someone do their art so well, in a way that speaks so intimately to me. and the 'firefly' and 'serenity' projects involve several of these someones. fabulous job, one and all! i'm somewhat sad that i've seen all there is to see of it now. all there is to see so far anyway... oh- and i'm new here. hear?

River and Jayne's 'Rules'
Sunday, 17 February 2008 10:20:07

Okay, I know I said I wasn't gonna post any more stories, other than to finish up Archangel, which I'm doing slowly. Then Jane0904 posted 'The Couch' based on my one shot of "Jayne's Rules of Marriage". It was great! I loved it, laughed the whole time I was reading it. So I decided to post the rules here, just so folks wouldn't have to go looking elsewhere for them. Then everyone wanted to know if River had any rules, and of course, she did, so I posted them as well. And yes, that means I have, I think, already violated every last one of my New Years Resolutions. I'm just not very dedicated. That's got to be it. And I never meant that I wouldn't be around, still reading. THis is a GREAT site, full of very cool people, and home to some awesome writers. My stories, though, just didn't seem to be received all that well, which, hey, that's life! But I think I'll post more of my Rules series here, just because the first two got such good feed back. I only write fanfic to entertain. I figure if it ain't entertaining, then I'm not doing it right, that's all.

Good news for "Not Sorry" fans...
Tuesday, 19 February 2008 01:30:08

I'm writing a sequel. I have been beaten into submission by your sweet, sweet comments, and I came up with a story idea this morning. It will be fluffy, but I'm trying to slide some angst in there as well. However, I did come across a small roadblock in the writing process, and I will be racking my brain for a way around it for the rest of the evening. Or, at least until the Sarah Connor Chronicles comes on tonight. I refuse to miss this week's episode. I heard there is an extra special appearance by an important character in the Terminator series. But, I will resume thinking afterwards.

First Story Posted

I have the prologue of my first Firefly fanfic posted in the BSR. The crew comes back from the Black post BDM to find they have turned the Verse upside down. All kinds of crazy things have happened. Student riots in Sihnon, a campaign to destroy the Reavers, and the Rim flooding with cashy money, weapons, Alliance deserters, and anarchists. In the midst of this they pickup a job from Badger who has moved up in the underworld. We are also introduced to a previous associate of his. I have most of the story outlined and know what some of the names of the chapters will be. Spinning Out Prologue: The News These Days Chapter1: What We Hath Wrought Chapter2: Long Time, No Piss Off Chapter3: Communication Breakdown Chapter4: The Deep End

AMAZING!!! INCREDIBLE COMEBACK!!!
Wednesday, 20 February 2008 04:26:54

It's a good year to be a Montreal Canadiens fan! The Habs just gave the Rangers a taste of their own medicine as they erased a FIVE GOAL deficit to come away with the big W (no Habs team has ever done this before, and there's been some pretty good ones). Ladies & menfolks, that was a game for the ages. Alex Kovalev's tying goal with 13 minutes left... Huet stoning both Shanahan and Jagr (who had 4 assists in the game... as:censored:le) in the shootout... Koivu mystifying the Ranger's tender and nailing the game-winner... Damn, I should've taped it. NHL teams beware, the Habs are for real and they're coming to get ya!

I posted the first chapter of my first fan fic. I also changed some things around so that there is now another chapter added to the list: Spinning Out Prologue: The News These Days Chapter1: Port Introspection Chapter2: What We Hath Wrought Chapter3: Long Time, No Piss Off Chapter4: Communication Breakdown Chapter5: The Deep End

The Wages of Sihnon
Wednesday, 20 February 2008 10:38:10

rough cut - extract from unfinished fic ………………………………………….. The landscape - swirling as it was around them, and under the vibrant sunset in a sky filled with shining kites and gliders – was truly idyllic, distractingly so. The neat arbour of plants, the lawns and small trees, the old stone walls – many of them derelict – the pools and ponds dancing with refractive water and the colourful bodies of tropical fish. Yes, it was distracting – which was presumably why The Priestess had invited Inara to walk through the grounds with her. She knew Inara well, knew that the heady delights of the manicured nature about her could not fail to impact, knock her off balance, and move her emotionally. Inara knew it too – her head swimming and aflame with every sense engulfed – and her ears - hearing for a moment only the splash of the water, the insects in the grass and the bees among the flowers - were slow to listen to the words being spoken to them. “This is a time of… choices”, the Priestess was saying as together they strolled the neat and meandering path. “Many decisions are being weighed – and, do you realise that every action of every member of our Guild can affect the whole?” Inara steadied herself, “In what sense?” “For example,” there was a pause for effect, the Priestess had deliberately adopted the crotchety tones of an old school ma’am, “your idea to create a Training House in the rim – House Serra… or whatever you were calling it. And now – with the Alliance pulling back from so much of the Rim… They are wondering – would it be possible… a licensed Guild – licensed by us… but no longer regulated by them.” Inara was shocked. “The Alliance would never - De-regulate? You mean CRIMINALISE – the Guild?” The Priestess nodded, even as she gazed down at the rhododendrons. “That’s exactly what I mean.” Inara kept her eyes on the other woman now. “That would never happen. Not now – we’ve come too far – our culture is…” “Enlightened? I wonder Inara if you really grasp the reality of the checks and balances and – well, just the basic bribery, necessary to maintain such ‘enlightenment.” She accented her words by brushing the green fly from off the petals before her. “But surely the Alliance approves of - ” This was met with a snort. “The Alliance approves of control. Surely you are not so naïve Inara?” Finally the Priestess turned and faced her – looking into her eyes, tapping the ground with her cane. “What are the two elements in humanity – the two needs that the Alliance cannot readily meet – and for the lack of which people will rebel, riot… force change and revolution?” Inara could feel herself becoming the pupil she had once been. It was a role she did not want – but could not easily cast off it seemed. “The Sexual and the Spiritual.” She answered dutifully. The Priestess nodded. “Exactly. Between us – The Guild and The Priory – we serve to fulfil those needs… we are therefore agents of control. It is THAT which allows the Alliance a choice – instead of de-regulation, they can choose to actively support the Guild, that is YOU – legally, financially. Even as they pull back their men, their machinery – it is YOU that can become their resource for stability. If they decide.” The woman turned once more to the flowers, leaving Inara to speak to her back. “But very few are eligible to retain a Companion – only the very privileged…” “Yes – only the very Good. But as for the rest – the rest can aspire, neh? Men can aspire to walk with a Companion – and women to become one. Again – that is Control.” And so saying she moved away and resumed strolling. Inara was forced to catch up. “But we…” “Enjoy what – freedom? Ha!” The cane waved into the air. “Our lives are coded, ritualised - we are machinery. We enjoy… luxury – perhaps… but it is the velvet cushion that gives lustre to a diamond watch. And a diamond watch has no concept of freedom – it is of course – a control device like any other.” She stopped quite suddenly again and Inara nearly bumped into her. Nearly but not qui

Where Have I Been?
Thursday, 21 February 2008 16:37:23

I have not been around much, or writing much, this past year. I had wondered why, myself. I love writing fic; what happened? My dayjob is "freelance writer." At the present time I write three columns a month for one monthly newsletter, and two other newsletters besides. I also have a couple of other projects ongoing that crop up periodically, but on a day to day basis, I have those three deadlines every single month. Just this month, I voluntarily gave up one of the three columns. I still have to write it for this month and next, but after that I'm down to two. Just this month, one of the two newsletters I write was taken in-house, which means I won't be writing it anymore. I still have to write one more issue, but after that, I'm done. Which means that two months from now, I'll be back where I was a year ago, before I took on the third column and the second newsletter. And I must be a total idiot, because it only just now hit me that

Posted Chapter 2 of Spinning Out
Friday, 22 February 2008 17:51:14

I posted another chapter late lastnight...or rather early this morning. I really like it but it is seriously angstnacious. I hope I don't scare readers off but so far comments have been very positive. I'm glad this one is out of the way. Chapter 3 "Long Time, No Piss Off" of course has Badger in it. He will give Mal the lay of the land and offer him a job. After this chapter the scenery will be set. Then it will be time for action :blast: Oh, and Chapter 4 will take a while to write but it will be awesome...I hope. I've been doing a lot of research for it and my hopes are high for this OC. Speaking of which: Tom and Jackson turned out real well. I liked Tom more than Jackson but he's what we have left. A future, for this one, I see.

Bored, bored, bored...
Friday, 22 February 2008 20:59:41

I've been putting up a lot of stuff because I've been really, really, really bored.... Anyway, I've decided I cannot date a guy who doesn't like (or who's never seen) Serenity/Firefly. I mean, I could get him to sit down and watch it, yeah, but someone I know said the series/movie were dumb :blast: We don't know each other anymore.

(Firstly – Colt99 and TuJiaoZuo, I forgot to say thanks before – your comments and posts were essential to the writing of Spiritual.) cough – cough – ok, at the risk of coming on like gwyneth paltrow (and not in the Royal Tennenbaums – sigh) and because I am going on holiday once my current story is posted, there follows a long list of thanks and appreciation… The Wages of Sihnon is dedicated to MSB, Sister and Riverflan. You ROCK. I started writing Wages of Sihnon last year after Quicksilver… the story wouldn’t break and I realised that I could not write Inara at all. So I wrote Words on a Wing instead which looked at a Companion’s experience through the eyes of a young trainee. Inara had one line on a video screen! It was quite some time till I had the guts to put Inara into a fic for the BSR but I have never stopped working on the Sihnon story. For this reason the list of people who helped, inspired or supported this tale is a lot longer than others. I hope my fic stays interesting. Kimber – you’ve weathered many a storm – I would not be writing about Inara at all still if not for you! I have read many significant Guild related stories and it would be dumb to pretend that there is no influence on me from the likes of Tamsibling, SpaceAnjl (thanks for tolerating my inner xander!), Jane0904, Mal 4 Prez, LeiaSky and Slumming. The quality of these writers staggers me. I have always devoured every thread posted about Inara or the Guild and so thanks are due to Agent Rouka, Asarian, Platonist and many others. Jetflair (also a fic stunner!) and NBZ (sick of being thanked yet?) helped me during my first period of very low confidence – their advice on writing has been vital. Still is. Thanks! Schooner – I always come back to a post of yours that Firefly is about the little people grinding away and you remain an influence on every one of my fics ‘Sihnon ‘ included. In a different way, MerryK has also helped put some humanity back in my writing. Ambdobell – you won’t likely know how helpful your comments long ago about ‘voices in fic’ were and still are. Thanks! Similarly, Zzeta and Desertgirl for their posts to the board about dialog. Chrisisall and Safeat2nd – general comments and posts to the board have really inspired me (you won’t know why!) – and kept my feet on the ground, a smile on my face and my head out my ass (blog pages like this excepted!). Current inspiration for keeping with a wider verse – HermitsRest and GorramMan. Thanks! ……………………………………………..

Why I haven't been around...
Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:32:08

Well, about two weeks ago I started my mid-yearly exams :hanged: and it was very unsettling with stress an' all...I filled all the extra papers with 'Mal/Inara's lol - don't worry examinars don't see these papers :D I hadn't much time to write either :( or the surf the net, I just posted some comments and a shot but I promise you a decent fic sometime soon (A very big thanks to my beta Desergirl by the way!!!) and keep on with the routine. Just pray that I get good results but I learned 3 shiny things this week: 1) I came first in English 2) I came first in German - and 4th in the whole school (not third for 3 marks :knife: ) 3) I'm second in French Now I'm waiting for the rest of the marks, fingerscrossed at the Firefly shrine... pray for me!!! Proudly M/I obsessed Kim

Questions, comments?
Sunday, 24 February 2008 04:10:31

I been dreaming alot lately. Weird dreams about my life and the realities i'm writing with all smushed together. Which is great on the one hand, i've come up with some killer lines, but sucks on the other because i'm masively sleep deprived. Anyway i thought i would put some quotes from future episodes up here. They are full of tease but i don't want them just sitting around until i get to writing the episodes! Thats not fun at all.... So in no particular order and with no real explanation.... ~~~~~~~~ River: Mal’s gone mad. Simon: No he hasn’t (chinese little sister) Jayne: (sarcastic) Increduously excitables the phrase I would’t have used. After a moment of silence. River: If they die. We die. (she is reffering to Inara and Derria and the fact that if they die the crew will be torn apart) ~~~~~~~~ Zoe: It’s a planet half populated with Reaver’s, Sir I don’t think you fully comprehend…. Mal: No I don’t think you understand. Probable the most important women, as I’ve just found out, are dying down there. Zoe: You’re right Sir. How could I possible know anything about someone important to me dying at the hands of a Reaver. (pause as they both take a breather) Zoe cont: (quetly) We’ll get them back. Mal: (louder) You’re GORRAM straight we will. Mal storms out of the bridge and Zoe glances towards the pilots chair. She places a hand on her newely swollen belly. ~~~~~~~~ Mal: I’m an old friend of Shepard Book, just wantin to do the right thing, let his family know. Shepard Chartel: Of Course, there is unfortunately little I can tell you about his times before the Abbey. His times with us however are greatly detailed. Mal: I’ll take what I can get. Shepard Chartel: I must leave you for the moment, to pray. Would you care to join? Mal: um…you go ahead, I’ll spend time..ah reflecting alone. Shepard Chartel: As you wish. ~~~~~~~~ Council Member: Indefinant Suspension, until you appeal to us otherwise. Inara’s jaw drops a little. Inara: How am I spose to do that. If I am not a Companion. How am I meant to prove my loyalty to the guild to be granted an appeal? Council member: The guild has reached their decision, do not try to argue. It is beneath Companions to argue Inara. Inara is silent. ~~~~~~~ Mal: Make good ‘n’ sure those bolts wont rust or detatch. That’s the last thing we need comin in on atmo. Wash: I got it. Mal: And Kaylee said somen bout metal fragments flyin into the engine room, so watch we don’t leave somen to fly into the air ducts… Wash: I know Mal. Mal: And… Wash stops what he is doing to turn and talk to Mal. Wash: I know how to fix a Gorram primary buffer panel…(of Mal’s look)….sir. The pair are silent for a moment while Wash continues to work. Wash: You know we’ll be flyin right by there, wouldn’t be trouble to stop in for a visit? Mal: Troubles all it would be, sides minds were made, no point in dwelling on it. ~~~~~~ Mal: Why were you at Badgers? Inara: That’s hardly any of your business. Mal: Well actually….. Inara: Mal. Shut up. This has nothing to do with you. I want my work back, my life. They have taken everything away from me. Mal: That aint true and you know it. Inara stops arguing for a moment because she knows he is meaning himself and the crew on Serenity. Inara: He was setting some papers in order for me. Companion documents….. Mal: Fake companion documents…. Inara: Fake documents so that I could continue working from Serenity. Mal: You’re not a companion anymore Nara. You don’t have to live by their rules. You can do whatever you want, you can (a beat) be with whoever you want. Inara: Mal… Mal: (interrupting her)….walk away. You wanna live your life that way, that’s fine by me but you don’t do it on my ship. I aint got time for those games. Inara: (very hurt by his last comment) you….dont want me…..here. Mal: What you an I both want and what you and I both can have always been dissimilar, and sides we both know you aint been a companion for a while n

First Music Video Ever!
Sunday, 24 February 2008 12:49:48

I finished making my first music video EVER! and its obviously a firefly music video. Took me ages and i'm quite proud.

Getting kind of quiet around here.
Monday, 25 February 2008 02:06:26

Seems to be a little to quiet around here. Thought I would start a little Invader Zim tribute to liven things up. Invader Zim has a similar history to Firefly. The network removed an excellent program and then the fan base grew to spread across the Earth. Feel free to contribute. It is the internet. All's fair. God bless YouTube. Traveler

Finally done YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN.
Monday, 25 February 2008 03:09:52

Hey All Well, I can't remember the last time I posted, or if anyone really cares, but I finally managed to post the rest of YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN. Even though there are parts that are incomplete, I finally decided to post it, mainly because I don't know if I can really get around to finishing it, what with school and graduation and real life coming up. I also wanted to post it because it's the section I worked on the most. It's what I've always wanted to see in a Firefly fanfic (the stuff with the elder Tams and Gabriel's descent, not the rock music angle which I'll admit is a bit dated), and I want it out there just get it off my hard drive. I've been sitting on this for about two years. So if you please comment on my last chapters, that would be great. Peace

Moronic Drivers >:(
Monday, 25 February 2008 21:29:35

In my last TWO driving lessons I have encountered three moronic drivers. The first one decided to overtake me right before having to stop at traffic lights. I mean, what was the point? He had to stop anyway so why did he bother? The second one, on the same lesson, tried to overtake me to avoid stopping in a box junction at some traffic lights but when he realised he couldn't, he then drove up a bus lane and waited until the lights changed before zooming off. Dangerous and illegal! The third one on my lesson on Saturday tried to overtakeme on a bend, coming off a roundabout with traffic coming in the opposite direction! She didn't manage it but she overtook me att he first available opportunity. Just because I am a learner doesn't mean that these people can treat me like crap! I'm only learning so it's understandable that I make mistakes but they have passed their tests so what makes them think they have more right to be on the road than me? It makes me want to scream

Chapter 3 Is Finally Posted!!
Tuesday, 26 February 2008 18:30:25

Oh man that was tougher than I thought. I promised a couple people it would be done by Sunday but that didn't pan out. My orginal outline is basically now a list of things that won't happen but the story is better for it. I'll be making a post in the BSR message board about a very subtle theme and some other ideas behind the story. The word count, for anybody curious enough to actually be reading this, was actually 6,220. I was really afraid of it becoming an expository disaster but I think it worked out. It doesn't read like an info dump. The tabel of contents has been rearranged again and is as follows: Spinning Out Prologue: The News These Days Chapter1: Port Introspection Chapter2: What We Hath Wrought Chapter3: Long Time, No Piss Off Chapter4: The Dig (tentative chapter title) Chapter5: Communication Breakdown Chapter6: The Deep End Another tentative idea is a name for an arch of stories that follow this line of events that I've created. I'm thinking "Serenity: The Centrifugal Chronicals" It keeps with the theme that central planets are spinning out of control. The previously mentioned message board post will explain it in greater detail. The new Chapter 4 will be very action packed. Can you say, "Return of the Killer Woman?":blast: I thought you could

Well, I've finally done it...
Tuesday, 26 February 2008 19:05:36

I've posted a little ficlet in the BSR for the first time. I've pulled it out from the dark recesses of my hard drive into the harsh light of the internet for all to see. It's called "Dignity", and resides here:

Open letter to shippers reagrding "Dark Hawk ..Pale Dove"
Wednesday, 27 February 2008 01:06:45

Hey all..... I've noticed readers on the storyline..and asked for comments. A few have responded...so I'm opening the flood gate and asking the eternal question: What do you like or don't like? I would truly appreciate some answers on this that are constructive, not just slams. If you have a problem with the storyline (too full of OC's, maryjanes, so on) by all means say something. I'll listen to all as long as it's constructive. I write to make myself happy but if no one's reading it (and I am honest and egotistical enough to admit readership matters to me) then there's no point. I don't want to have my ego stroked, either. I'm looking for ways to make the storyline either more interesting or more enjoyable for the readers out there. Truly. So please, honest critiques always welcome! Hoping your all having good days- keep on shipping BBJ-

Sad News
Wednesday, 27 February 2008 11:14:56

My cat has passed on. We had to put him to sleep yesterday. He had the Big C, and he was very old, and his organs were failing. It still didn't make it easy. So farewell to a big, mean fighter of a cat, who loved his food. When we got him his last collar, it was very sparkly, but as my husband said, 'A cat walks down the street in a collar like that...' He was loud and obnoxious at times, and he had a bad tendency to throw up in inconvenient spots in the middle of the night. He liked to fight. He brought home all sorts of things in all sorts of states. You couldn't prepare food in the kitchen without eyes in the back of your head. (Or claws up the back of your knees.) But we loved him, and we shall miss him. But if you follow the theory of reincarnation, somewhere, somebody in the world has just picked up a new kitten, and received an unexpected handful of pins and a loud demand for sardines.

Part Time
Wednesday, 27 February 2008 23:12:47

I'm gonna be a here a little bit more, now, I've decided. Just Part Time, as it were. That means a bit of fic, the occasional humourous poster and stories about people with large guns and an unhealthy foundness for knives. Still working on A New 'Verse which will turn up eventually. A few edited versions of fics I posted a while ago and seem to have disapeared! :knife: And a new thing or two, maybe about the chracters, maybe just about the world that Firefly is based in. Actually I'm gonna take a small moment to bitch about that-cos I'm lamenting the lack of stories that revolve around OC's in different settings. The 'Verse is such a diverse and varied setting there are hundred of stories to tell that dont involve the crew and Serenity. Dont get me wrong I still love those, but I'd like to see other stuff as well. Ahhhh maybe I just need to read more. Anyways, Keep on Flying. Stormwind.

Apologies to my readers
Thursday, 28 February 2008 08:36:20

I just want to apologise to those of you who read my Maya fics on a regular (or even irregular) basis. I haven't been posting as often as I'd like - I know it seems that every time you log on there's a tale from me, but to me it feels like I'm letting you down. There's problems at work, and I'm having to look for a new job (difficult at the best of times) and at the moment it feels like I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul just to filch enough time to get a chapter done. But don't worry - there's plenty of stories left to go ... Or maybe you should be afraid. Be very afraid.

The Internetz
Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:02:20

So I've had lots of people notice that I'm not online much anymore. I know most of you know I've had lots of issues and just general stress that's been keeping me offline. That is not the whole story though. As much as I've loved being online and making lots of friends and discovering new things, it's eaten away at a lot of time I should be spending else where. I'm not saying anything bad 'bout spending lots of time online. I know lots of people who consider this a very big part of their lives and fit it into their schedule very well, and I think that's just shiny. But for me it's just been an escape and I really need to stop hiding from my life. I'm a wife, I'm employed, I have a loving fam, I have lots of friends who are not online, I go to church, I have a house to take care of, I have animals, I have bad health issues. All these things are very important and I have been neglecting. This doesn't mean that all the wonderful people I have met online don't mean anything to me, you all do very much, some more than you could ever know. It's just I have to focus on my life. I think half my stress is just all that has caught up with me after being avoided for so long. I used to spend literally all day online or every spare moment when I had so many other things that really needed my attention. When I was doing other things I just couldn't wait to get back online. I really feel I need to get back to those things. Don't get me wrong, I'll still be here everyday, I just won't be able to stay on as much as I used to, therefore not as active in the online community. This doesn't mean I won't email or respond to messages or comments, I'll just be less active in other things; blogging, reading blogs, forums, bulletins, and the like. I'd still like to very much keep in contact with everyone so if you want my number or address (one of my secret loves is snail-mail) to keep in better contact, feel free to message or email me. Or just keep messaging or emailing me, I'll try my very best to keep that regular. As much as I'm gonna miss my online fun, I gotta start taking my responsibilities seriously and realize that I can't keep hiding from it all. Thank you for all your love and understanding!

Conceptual Metaphors and my fanfic
Friday, 29 February 2008 00:12:13

Made a post today about chapter 3 and my ideas behind it.
