There's a high school directory online called Sconex.com where you can join and see other people from nearby high schools. I'm from The Bronx High School of Science (NY), and I created a group called "You Can't Stop The Signal. (Firefly)" If anyone is interested in joining, feel free! I'm doing this to spread the news of Firefly, and hopefully a lot of people will join. Right now I'm not doing too good; I can view the profiles of students that go to my school or if they are linked to me through my friends, and it's sort of local, as the schools that come up most frequently are the local schools. It's hard to publicize the group, so if anyone is a member of sconex.com, please join the group! I do not know if there are other groups dedicated to Firefly. Although I typed in the key words and found nothing, it may be only locally. I also don't know if sconex.com is known to other states.

I was talking with one of my film profs about STAR WARS and George Lucas and all that, and it got me to thinking about fandom in general and what I like and don't like about it. I enjoy being a geek. I like being part of an internet community that helps champion a vastly underrated sci-fi story. And I enjoy being a part of other fandoms and such. But one thing about these fam groups that I don't really like is the fanaticism involved with it. Now I know this might sound hypocritical coming from someone who not only saw SERENITY five times on it's opening weekend, but went dressed as Wash all five times. But hear me out. The reaction to the film has been highly positive from everyone whose seen it. But occassionally, I see a thread here talking about how SERENITY was inferior to FIREFLY and a list talking about all the things they didn't like about it. Whinings like "Kaylee wasn't in the movie too long. Inara was just a cameo. Simon was too assertive. The film lacked the complexity of the series." Just a list of bitching and complaining from people who should have been incredibly grateful for the fact that there even was a movie to begin with. Which brings up my main point. At times, a lot of fans, not just Browncoats but the internet community in general, act like a spoiled child on Xmas morning. The kind of kid who gets the dollhouse they wanted, but makes a big stink over the fact that it's homemade with exquisite craftsmanship and not the one they saw in a catalogue. Rather than being grateful that there is a movie follow up to an unjustly cancelled TV show, or that there are going to be three more additions to the Holy Trilogy that are going to explain how it all began, they whine and mope and complain about the tiniest insignificant details, when they should be looking at the big picture. Rather than realizing the overall arch and connecting threads through all of the six films, they crucify them for their choice in window dressing. I love STAR WARS. I can't wait for like a 30th anniversary, 10 disc box set of the whole series to be released in 2007. But I'm not one of those "George Lucas raped my childhood" idiots. I'm not so wrapped up in my pre-conceived notions of what the Holy Trilogy should be that I whine when Lucas decides to try a different approach. The prequels , in my opinion, had the exact same amount of wonder and enchantment that the originals had. I have no objections to them at all. What I do object to is the collective mass of whiny, jaded geeks who are not able to look beyond their narcissism to realize what they have in front of them. If they want Han Solo to be a cold blooded killer, go ahead, take it. If they prefer a trilogy of films about cold, emotionless philosophers in leather fighting a computer system whose programs have more personality than the humans fighting it, so be it. I'm sticking with the fans that are grateful for what they get.

here's the question. if firefly / serenity as we know it never returns how open would ya'll be to a new show set in the same verse but with totally different characters? a few examples: - a series set during the unification war - a series set around a main alliance character - another 'historical' series maybe recounting the first signs of trouble on Miranda or my favourite idea - a series based around the hunts of jubal Early (especially the one with the miget arsonist) although they would be different shows they could still perhaps have camoes for the original cast

Ok, look alive you male Browncoats! Tis V-day! Time to remind the women-folk of our lives that we care. There are daughters, sisters, mothers, grandmothers, nieces, favorites aunts and close female friends, not to mention wives and girlfriends, that deserve it! Just a little something to show you care. No needy for tacky or cheesey. A single flower, a hug, a phone call is all it takes. If you want to cheap out and succumb to marketing... your loss. As a male that spends the majority of my summer on the softball diamond, I know I don't always take the time to show my girls how I feel. So on Valentines day I cook a special dinner, make a dessert, deliver my flowers (my florist knows me by name, not a bad thing really, keeps me outta the doghouse.). My little girls LOVE it! I know I'm spoiling it for their future boyfriends, but as a dad, I feel it's my duty. Duty is the wrong word, I love every minute of it. Ya it may be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. When My wife and I were at different Universities, I drew her Valentines cards. It's the... (hang onto your hats)... thought (ya I said thought) that counts. So, put some thought into it fellas. With a very few exceptions, they are worth it. That's just my two cents worth.

A wise person once said: "If you want to have a friend, be a friend." Tried that today. Only thing is, my FireFly friends are not in; doing their Valentine's Day thingy, I guess. And I should be happy for them; and I am. Don't make this day any less lonely, though. We all have to die alone; big deal. Some of us have to live alone, too. Nope, I won't say I "hate" this day; for there's really no place for hate in the heart. But lemme just say I will be glad when it's over. Do you know what my sin is? It's envy.

So hey, just for V-Day, started a new little series:smile:Hope you guys like it and thanks to all the readers! It's a continuation of my series First through Gift Horse. Unfortunately it got bumped due to high volume, so I am shamelessly plugging it in a blog:biggrin:Please comment! It's called Thoughts

This is going to be a rather long and personal log entry. I just have to get some things out of my system. You are really welcome to read (and comment, of course), but don't say I did not warn you  Do you know the Angel ep where they have a sesitivity training at the police department and go all emotional (I think the ep title is "Sense and Sesitivity")? It was a little bit like that at work today (minus the training part). Everyone was just venting over something or yelling at someone else. And I sat at my PC screen on the verge of tears all day (more on that later). I really could not figure out a reason, until the thought came to me that, hey, maybe we have a full moon? And then when I just got home from work, there she was, staring me in the face, all big and round and satisfied with herself, laughing at me. Luna can be a real bitch sometimes. My life is a little Whedonesque at the moment. I am having relationship issues. Well, actually it is just one relationship issue and the issue is more or less that I don't have a relationship. That's something I share with roughly estimated a fourth of the human race, so it isn't half bad and I should be able to live with it by now (my last steady relationship ended 8 years ago and there weren't many unsteady ones in between either) At that time I fell in love with a man who did not return my feelings. That hurt, of course, rejection always does, but I got over it (or so I thought) and we became friends. Good friends. Close friends. Soulmates even. We really developed a brother/sister like relationship, we had so much in common it sometimes was almost scary. We are both pretty smart (the "gifted is the term" variant of smart), but were underachievers in school and especially at university, dropping out of our academic careers at almost the same time, found work at the same company, we both seemed unable to get a steady relationship on the way, we spent vacations together, wild ones, too, we shared a tent and a bunk on a sailing vessel more than once, we were rope partners when rock climbing. We are close, as close as you can get without starting a sexual relationship, but never would even as much as a kiss pass between us. He was the one who drove me to the hospital when I sprained my ankle, he fed my chicken broth when I was sick and he was the one I could call when I needed a strong man to help me redecorating my apartment. He depended on me to help him with his resume for a new job, he asked for advice on dating women. We talked on the phone for hours, we exchanged up to 20 emails a day. We were close. We needed each other in the way you need someone when you are single and still want to share your life with someone. Half a year agon he fell in love with another woman, the right one, this time, as far as I can tell. He is as happy as can be, they moved in together after only three month and they are going to get married in two weeks. I am sure that he would say that his feelings for me have not changed, but he just does not need me anymore. And for that reason I cannot keep calling him and depending on him the way I did all the years before. I feel like I am losing my best friend. I really do. And it hurts just so much. I hate myself for this, acutally. I don't want to need anyone, I want to be in control of my life and the last thing I want is to go all weepy about a man who does not even love me back (because as much as I want to blame it on the best-friend-no-longer-there part, I am afraid that this is what it is all about, still. He rejected me and marries someone else). I know it is time to just let go and be happy for him. I just can't. I am not Julia Roberts. I can't go to his wedding party and wish him luck on his way (and I don't have a gay friend who would show up and dance with me instead, either ... goodness, I even watched this stupid movie with him once). I know I would break down and cry as soon as the ceremony starts and I would probably be the one waving and screaming at the "if anyone here knows a reason..." part. I told him I will not atte

(There be spoilers, I'm sure) Finally got the trade paperback in the mail the other day, and of course I wasted no time in totally devouring it in one sitting. First off, I do have a small little gripe or two about a couple of things. Don't think our man Joss is all that used to the medium. Yet. Nothing so that his inner greatness doesn't shine through and nearly blind me in awe, but... couple transitions are a little wonky and it looks like he had a little trouble containing the story within the inherent confines of having to tell a story in so few pages. One or two parts I had to go back through to understand and such, couple transitions were a bit awkward. Sorry, had to get that out of the way ;p Five years in college studying sequential art and all I got out of it was opinionated. Plus side: It's more Firefly! It's worth getting the paperback edition for Nathan's intro and the various artists' take on the crew alone. Tim Bradstreet's one of my long-time fanboy idols from way back when he was illustrating RPG manuals, so I really appreciated his rendition of Book. Not to mention Will Conrad's art. I've always been a little wierded out by seeing Tv shows done in comic form. The characters are never going to look exactly like they do in the show. (Unless you could somehow get each and every cast-member to sit in for reference drawings for every panel...) He does a simply bang-up job in that area though. Wash and Inara being the two that don't QUITE look right. Kaylee's somewhere in between, I think he made her nose a bit too straight and the overalls prolly threw me a bit, but for the most he really captured her. Jayne of course just lends himself to being "comicized". But Mal, River, Zoe and Book are dead on the money. Not to mention the fact that he's a real shiny artist. Lotta love obviously went into putting this together, and that's generally what I look for in anything. That's what got me hooked on Firefly in the first place. Also, there's some really touching moments in there. (Here come the spoilers) Didn't catch it the first time through, but there's a panel where Mal is about to talk to Inara and is interrupted by Wash. It floored me when I noticed that in that panel, Mal is standing outside Inara's shuttle, poised to... knock! :P Nice being able to see some of the gaps between the show and the movie filled in, too. Bishop's leaving really makes sense to me now. Well... running out of steam. Just felt the need to get that off my chest. Now that I'm hearing there may be more comics in the future, I'm doubly excited. (Still not as good as the series getting up and running again. And it will!!!! :P But still news enough to be excited about.)
