I didn't know how to judge Kraven I thought ok maybe Sony with this movie could have some trick left maybe in marketing, however its off to a terrible start.
I'm only vaguely aware of him. I don't believe I ever owned a comic with Kraven, but I did collect Marvel cards when I was a kid and he was on some of them.
This is pure D-List shit here. I'm sure if the right people were put on it and an excellent story were crafted it could have done well, but we know that none of these people making comic book movies are interested in or capable of making good stories.
Giving Kraven his own movie would have been like if they gave Scarecrow his own movie without Batman in it instead of Batman Begins.
Stupid.

Wow.... Color me shocked.
I was 100% convinced that when I looked up the director to Kraven it would be a no-name DEI hire with nothing but a few sub-$1 Million indie flicks to their name. I guess it's only Disney/Marvel that does this.
They got a dude named J.C. Chander to do it.
Probably still not a great pick despite being a white guy who has actually directed big budget movies before. His list is pretty short, but it does have Margin Call which I thought was a good movie. I don't recognize the other 3 movies on his list.
I think at this point, unless somebody is throwing them some insane amounts of money to do it, there just aren't any great directors out there who even want to touch a comic book movie anymore. Going forward having idiots who can't direct in comic book movies might not even be a DEI thing since it will be the only people they can get to put their names on them.

Or is it more like going to Walmart, but there is nothing to take home with you after all the money you spent except an empty popcorn bucket that is also a greasy/salty souvenir of the experience?

Holy shit!
It has a sense of humor, folks!

Okay. You got me there buddy.
There is a reason why I could so very easily translate Ethan's explanation.
You and I don't go to the movie theaters. I'm assuming that maybe outside a rare special occasion that you haven't gone to the movie theaters much in at least the last 20 or so years too.
A lot of people aren't like you and I (and Ethan). They prefer to go out and socialize and be around other people for some reason. Don't pretend with me now that you're one of those people because you wouldn't be spending all your free time when not running your business shit posting on fireflyfans.net in 2024 if you were. There's no shame in it. You can own it.
As long as there's still fun to be had outside of the house, there will be people who go outside to have it. Even if that means just moving into another large box with a much larger rectangle and a much better sound system being the positive trade offs for potentially sitting with assholes, watching 30 minutes of commercials, and having carpet on your soles when you get home because they were so sticky from the liquid diabetes you were walking in to get to your seat that never gets cleaned up anymore.
There wasn't much fun to be had in theaters this year. A lot of stuff was pushed back a year or two or just cut from production completely.
Next year will be better. The only question is will it be better than 2023 was. If the answer to that question a year from now is no, they probably are in a bit of trouble.

I'm convinced that Hollywood's Abysmal Numbers are caused by technology. Home TV is better than the experience at the theater, but it remains a place where a carload of teenagers can go and be unsupervised by parents, so teens still go.
Hollywood has always made crap and yet people keep coming. From 2000: "One of the least entertaining satires ever made." "Spike Lee lost his nerve -- there are moments here, too, when it also seems like he lost his sense." https://www.metacritic.com/movie/bamboozled/

I called this one as a massive flop the second I heard it was announced.
I said it was going to do Madame Web numbers.
It appears that maybe I was only half right.
Sony WISHES Kraven was going to do Madame Web numbers.

I see reports everywhere saying that Kraven is "one of the" lowest opening weekends ever for a Marvel movie.
One of them?
Bitch, please... Ain't nothing in the Marvel catalogue had a worse opening than Kraven's $11 Million. Without even looking at it, I'm sure that the vast majority of Marvel movies between 2008 and Avengers: End Game made more than $11 Million on Preview Thursday.
Last year's super-flop The Marvels made $47 Million on opening weekend. This year's previous super-flop was Madame Web and even that cleared $15 Million on open.
What movies are you putting above Kraven as worse openings?
Are you digging all the way back to 2008's The Incredible Hulk?
No. I just checked that and it made $55 Million back in 2008 money.
Here's a list of the Top 10 lowest performing Marvel movies.
https://www.cbr.com/mcu-movies-lowest-box-office/
The Incredible Hulk is number 2 and The Marvels is number one, and all 8 other movies on that list grossed more than those did. And this list includes The Eternals and Shang Chi, which both had opening weekends 6 times larger than Kraven just did, and both of those came out in 2021, largely before most of the Biden Administration's inflation kicked in.
Funnily, as to illustrate the initial point I thought I'd be making, the original Iron Man makes that list at number 10, despite opening to $98 Million in 2008 money. The only reason it's on that list is because they didn't put 10 minutes into calculating all the Marvel movies for inflation first.
But I can't even make that argument here. I'm seriously struggling to find a Marvel movie that opened to less than $11 Million anywhere at any time to show that if you accounted for inflation it still wasn't worse than Kraven's $11 Million is right now.
...
...
Holy crap...
I looked at the numbers for the Blade Trilogy, figuring after I saw their total box offices at least the third one was going to be the movie that did worse than Kraven.
Nope...
Blade opening weekend: $17,073,856 in 1998
Blade II opening weekend: $32,528,016 in 2002
Blade Trinity opening weekend: $16,061,271 in 2004
They've got to be trolling us here... Are we going to never consider ANY Marvel movie the lowest grossing opening weekend because we're counting the Roger Corman 1994 Fantastic Four movie that made zero dollars on opening weekend because it was never actually intended to be seen by anybody?
