I forgot the most important point. My Mother and Sisters are Jehovah's Witnesses. Voting for a Republican would be immoral, but my younger sister has strong negative opinions about how terrible Trump is with his policies about Healthcare and, more recently, Covid-19 because she is a nurse. a) Do you still believe that the Vietnam was was winnable, or even worth "winning"? what would "winning" have looked like, anyway? Originally it started out as Vietnamese war of independence from French colonial masters. How did we wind up on the wrong side of that fight, anyway?
b) Did you not notice that more young men were persuaded to fight by Kennedy (a Massachusetts Democrat) and Johnson (a Texas Democrat) than by Nixon (a California Republican)? IT'S TRUE! Under Kennedy, total armed forces increased from 2.4 to 2.7 million, and under Johnson it jumped from 2.7 to 3.5 million, almost a million-man increase. The VERY FIRST year that Nixon took office, total armed forces dropped from 3.5 to 3.1 million, and by the end of his Presidency fell to 2.2 million - lower than when Kennedy first took office.
I guess that you didn't realize that you were coming in on the tag-end of a pointless conflict that was already winding down.
c) I suppose that you didn't notice that Nixon ended the war?
d) I had to look this up, but of the five Generals commanding the Vietnam War. NOT A SINGLE ONE IS TEXAN, AND MANY DID NOT COME FROM CONFEDERATE STATES. Creighton Abrams was borm in Massachusetts, William Westmoreland in South Carolina, Frederick Weyand was born in California, Maxwell taylor in Missouri, and Paul Harkins also born in Massachusetts.
