SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered a statewide ‘shelter in place’ order on Thursday afternoon to limit the spread of COVID-19.
The order comes into force Thursday evening.
In a letter to President Donald Trump, Gavin said: “We project that roughly 56 percent of our population — 25.5 million people — will be infected with the virus over an eight week period.”
In the announcement Thursday, Newsom promised that grocery stores will remain open, kids can still play outside, and food can still be picked up at restaurants.
This is a developing story. Stay with us for further updates.

According to Time, it's not so lenient...
https://time.com/5806477/what-is-shelter-in-place/
In California, officials in the Bay Area introduced some of the U.S.’s most stringent restrictions by announcing a “shelter-in-place” mandate on Monday, which affects nearly 7 million people across six counties. Since Tuesday, residents affected have been required to stay inside and can go out only for necessities. For now, the mandate will last for three weeks, until April 7.
“This is a critical intervention to reduce harm from the spread of the coronavirus in our community,” reads a guide to the mandate from the city of San Francisco. “This is a mandatory order.”

Hey... At least we're not China, and we're not a Communist Government (at least not yet)...

Now, as the number of new reported cases in China slows to a trickle, millions of residents are still restricted by the government to their homes; they're not even allowed to go outside to shop for groceries. Instead, the residents CNN spoke to said they have to rely on designated neighborhood committees to make group orders for daily necessities -- often at a higher price.
Maybe somebody should let the Bernie Bros and everybody in NYC that voted for AOC know about this.
Pretty sure they're going to get the memo in New York if Andrew Cuomo goes back on his word and decides to put the same restrictions in place for the state that Commiefornia just did.

1KIKI: Governor Gavin Newsom has just placed all of California under a statewide 'shelter in place' order.
Now, to figure out what that means.
SIX: Sounds like a nice way of saying Martial Law.
COVID-19 response seems to be turning into the Patriot Act on steroids.
Well, let's say there was a major earthquake and widespread looting was happening at night. Would you object to a nighttime curfew?
Nature has a way of throwing us major curves that don't fit into ideological paradigms. Quite honestly, you seem more concerned with Trump's reelection than with the health and life of many of your fellow citizens.
It's not fair: Trump has fended off major attacks against him concocted by the deep state. Every major criticism of Trump has been false. He should have been able to coast to election on the (slightly) improved economy, and for simply having withstood the false allegations and fake news for three years. He should have been able to bring up the results of various investigations into Comey, Clapper, and Biden etc on the way to November elections. But now the news cycle has been enitrely hijacked by COVID-19, nobody cares about Russia!Russia! anymore, and he has a NEW challenge.
Well, that's life. Sometimes it hands you a shit sandwich even if you've done everything right, like I did when I was pregnant. You have to make the best of the situation.
FWIW I don't think people will blame Trump for the economic fallout. What they WILL blame him for is a major portion of families seeing grandma and grandpa die, while Trump did nothing. This is a major challenge; and this is where leaders prove their worth, or not. The Chinese ideogram for "crisis" is composed of "danger" and "opportunity". That is where Trump is.
Now,"shelter in place" and other restrictions are only TEMPORARY measures. There'sno way in hell you can stomp out the virus that way, because the moment you relax the measures it will start to spread again. What has to happen is that a much better program of TESTING has to occur. That way you don't have to restrict everyone, only some. After that, someone needs to find successful treatments for this virus. There are several in the works, and - in addition, altho this will happen much later - vaccines are also being developed. Any imposition of controls that don't directly addres the pandemic, or their extension beyond when "the next step" might reasonably be expected should be suspect.
Just as an aside, it looks to me like Trump might be relying on the military rather than on the deep state. I find The Patriot Act and the RUSSIA!RUSSIA! accusation (which allowed the ce nsorship of the internet) far more pernicious than overt military action. Lockdowns might be disruptive but they have a purpose. Censorship, universal surveillance, false accusations, media bias, trial by rumor, gun confiscation, etc etc have all of the hallmarks of a powergrab, and we've seen the deep state do that already; and they didn't need a virus as an excuse.

Coffins lined up, to be carried away by military convoy because mortuaries, crematoria, churches and cemetaries are overwhelmed in hard-hit areas.

There's no evidence of that yet.
The testing that has already been done has shown a much smaller mortality rate than was being thrown around before, and that number is only going to go down as more people get tested. We'll never know the true numbers because there is no way to know if all of the people who are testing negative didn't already have it and recover from it.

The testing that has already been done has shown a much smaller mortality rate blah blah blah
That's why I specifically posted about grandma and grandpa.
That's why I posted the picture of the rows of coffins and convoys of military trucks carrying bodies: Because even if you restrict the high fatality rate to the elderly, that still means a lot of people will die
Now, maybe TO YOU grandma and grandpa are just inconveniently attenuated useless eaters who should have politely keeled over a couple of decades ago, but most Americans aren't as callous as that. Yeah, they can stomache killing foreigners by the millions, as long as those are brown people thousands of miles away and they don't have to see it on their TV screen, but let that happen to "them and theirs" (or to someone the press convinces could have been them and theirs) and they will demand vengeance

We don't know what happened in Italy yet. Compared to the rest of the world, that is an anomaly. It would suit you well to remember that and stop freaking out about the unknown until there are more facts.
Because right here in the united states, 150 people died so far since this started.
Today, 1,232 people in the US will die from smoking related illnesses.
Today, 82 people in the US will die of the flu.
Today, 102 people in the US will die in a fatal car accident.
Between the three of those causes of death combined, nearly 10 times as many people will die today than have died of the Coronavirus so far, and another 1,400 will die every single day for the rest of the year. And every day next year, and the next, and the next...
Do Right, Be Right. :)

Italy is NOT an anomaly. China and Iran have the same experience. Iran doesn't freely share information, but top Iranian officials and clerics are keeling over at a high rate, so one can imgaine the same happening in the population.China didn't build 16 pop-up hospitals in Hubei and (at one point) lock down half of its population for shits and giggles, yanno. China tried to warn us that this was a killer virus as early as mid January, and Trump shut down travel from China Jan 30ish. After that he followed the policies of the local officials in Wuhan: Minimize the problem, pillory anyone who might say otherwise, and do nothing. Here we are in mid-March, and people are finally waking up to the problem.
I don't know why you keep thinking this like a bad cold. And the problem is, if you wait until it gets bad in one more nation (like three examples of people keeling over in droves aren't enough already?) or you wait for definitive indication of a problem in your nation, at the rate this spreads it's already too late. A two-week delay is too much.
Glad that Newsome did what he did, altho he too was probably too late. Nations and states that take early action can look at nations and states that didn't, and see what their futures might have been.
Quote:LODI LOCKED DOWN ON ONE CASE
In performing their research, the authors of this study were able to highlight how social distancing affected via a lockdown can dramatically reduce the rate of new coronavirus cases. The Italian city of Lodi was the first to confirm a case of the coronavirus
Quote:BERGAMO WAITED TWO WEEKS
and enacted a lockdown on February 23. Another Italian city, Bergamo, waited until March 8
Quote:There are reasons why Italy has such a high deah rate: the population is aged, and they live intergenerationally. So mom,or dad, or kid got the virus and grandma and grandpa got nailed.
to enact a lockdown. This graph shows how the early social distancing efforts of Lodi helped to flatten the transmission curve as compared to Bergamo which experienced a much larger spike in coronavirus cases.

We don't live intergenerationally but our 60+ population is either out and about, just as exposed to the virus as anyone (maybe like YOUR parents, SIX?) or sequestered way in "old folks homes" which might be worse.

Yes. It IS an anomaly.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries
Even worst case numbers (which is what we have now because they haven't been testing much yet), the average death rate is 4.2% globally. And that's only so high because of these very early numbers coming out of a few countries that you mention without the REAL numbers that won't even approach being legitimate until millions of people are tested.
It might be hard to get the tests rolling out, but it's pretty difficult to trip over corpses.
I wouldn't go by the US numbers on this site until the CDC updates their own site here either:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/cases-in-us.ht
ml
(It says that they will update at NOON every weekday, but they don't specify what time zone, so apparently it's not my NOON).
But according to the first site I posted, the current counts are upped to 16,315 confirmed cases and 220 deaths. Up from the CDC data yesterday of 10,442 and 150.
If the numbers from the first site are what the CDC is going to report today, that's a drop from 1.44% to 1.35%, and they've only tested less than 6,000 people more than were tested yesterday.
If 250,000 people happen to be walking around with it now in America, that number drops to .08%, which is less than the flu. If a Million people already have it, it drops to .02%.
That's not even considering all the people who will be tested who will come up negative because they already have it and recovered and didn't even know it.
Quit the bullshit, and don't even put any stock into any of these numbers until a million people are tested.
Do Right, Be Right. :)
