A Technical and Cultural Assessment of the Mueller Report PDF

"Native PDF redaction has been available now for more than 20 years, yet this document is just images of redacted pages. As such, there is no searchable text, the document will not reflow on different devices and most importantly this document is not Section 508 compliant. The document cannot be read by a screen reader for people with visual disabilities and it cannot be analyzed using any text analysis tools. The Mueller Report as a redacted PDF document is really kind of sad."

Technical assessment: conclusion

It's interesting - and deeply unfortunate - that Department of Justice clearly used advanced redaction software but nonetheless chose to deliver a paper-age "images only" PDF. In so doing they:

1) Dramatically increased the file's size, probably by 8-10x.

2) Permanently and substantially reduced the visual text and image quality of a document of historical interest

3) Permanently reduced text searchability (assuming they received a searchable PDF from Mueller)

4) Delivered a documents that's inherently inaccessible to users who require assistive technology (AT) in order to read, requiring substantial remediation efforts to recover any useful degree of accessibility, let alone full compliance with applicable regulations.

A solution (of sorts)
www.pdfa.org/even-with-ocr-the-mueller-report-pdf-isnt-fully-searchabl
e
/

Given what was released, there's only one way to search the PDF with any assurance; a complete reconstruction of each page. This is exactly what the New York Times has done here: www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/04/18/us/politics/mueller-report-docu
ment.html

The method the Times used to present a genuinely fully-searchable version of the Mueller report is elaborate, and required the services of 22 people (they are credited at the bottom of the page); even so, they were not able to fully mimic the original pages. The result is functional but extremely expensive, both in staff time and computing resources.

This unfortunate reality could have been avoided if DoJ's workflow was simply redact-release instead of redact-print-scan-release (or even worse: print-scan-OCR-redact-print-scan-release). They chose a method that did not improve the security of redacted content but did materially and negatively burden everyone who would try to read, consume or otherwise process this document, forever.

We know that DoJ knows better, as we've previously observed that they use professional redaction software. In our view it's simply unacceptable that they should choose an unnecessary belt-and-braces approach for this historically-significant document that impedes every downstream user.

What are you going to do about it? It seems as though we had no choices.

And Trump is going to be re-elected unless the Democrats can find a resounding message and somebody worth voting for.

Screaming for Trump's head the next 6 years isn't going to work. And it's not going to do your lovely disposition any favors either.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Once the choice was between Lincoln and Douglas. Do you remember how that ended? Being reasonable with people will not get the country back together again, as Lincoln, with all his skills at persuasion, sorrowfully learned. First Inaugural Address of Abraham Lincoln http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/lincoln1.asp

6ix, you might want to take note that Lincoln's political opponents saw him as the most immoral, treacherous liar that ever held the office. They couldn't prove it, but they didn't care. They said it anyway. In the case of Trump, he proved it. See the redacted Mueller report.

My point was, the only other choice we had was Clinton. Her actions, such as scrubbing the server she should have had in her home clean, and having everybody involved with her smashing up her cell phones are well known and were never disputed.

So when we're talking about any similar activities that Trump may or may not have done now, we already knew that our only other choice had done all of that before the election even took place.

The clock is ticking, but it's not the tick tock to impeachment. You know that full well.

There isn't a lot of time left before the next election goes full swing, and the Democrats don't have any clear message for the people or a legitimate candidate that would have a chance against Trump. Even lefty sources have come out recently and said that all things considered and assuming nothing changes, Trump would have an advantage.

The only chance of getting Trump out of office is the election in 2020, or waiting until he serves his second term, or waiting until his health fails him. (Without going into your ultra-dark territory on that... I know that you know what I mean).

I'm just waiting for the Democrats to drop the identity politics bullshit and come up with a way of truly fixing the economy and job situation as a contrast to what we have now. We've been hearing for two years that it's getting better, but the situation has not improved at all for the working class and continues to degrade.

Is any Democrat talking about that though? Nope.

It's still "Nazi" this, and muh Feminism that, and RUSSIA!!!! fearmongering and demands for tax returns that you're never going to see.

The Democratic party in 2019 is abhorrent.

Fix that, and Trump might be out.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

6ix, you have a very ineffectual way of looking at things. I have bought expensive machines that were no damn good and I got rid of them after they failed to perform. I didn't tell myself that the competing machinery seemed to me to have been worse. I get rid of what is bad and seek something else. Same with employees. When they fail, I fire their dumb asses in the meanest possible way. I don't tell myself that the other candidates for the job didn't seem to be as good and therefore I'm keeping Mr Failure as an employee. I go and seek a new employee. If you want to convince yourself that Trump isn't Mr Failure, then go right ahead. If you seek a replacement President that you want to absolutely be sure is better than Trump, there is no way to be sure. But you can be sure that any Democrat will be very different from Trump or Mike Pence or Jeb Bush or Mitt Romney. You should not pay any attention to anybody's promises. No President can deliver on their optimistic campaign promises. They can only deliver on their littlest promises, the ones that don't require Congressional approval. (Example of little promises: I promise to make my tax returns public. I promise to place my business in a blind trust. www.usatoday.com/in-depth/news/politics/2019/03/18/president-donald-tr

I'm fine with Trump, dipshit.

Give me a reason to vote against him in 2020.

I wonder that sometimes too, but now I think it's just a sampling of the actual American gen pop these days though. Everbody crazy.

The more things aren't getting anywhere, the crazier it's all getting. You can only run into the same block wall soooo many times...

Unless you are South American... They don't seem to have a problem with that

Strange. I got a completely searchable pdf off of a government website that is viewable by alternate software. Where did I get it? Don't remember and not my problem. But a short search should get you there. It was only 1 link down from the original webpage I looked at, either Signy's or yours. Either that or my software is better.

They're too busy in South America dealing with dictators, failed socialism, poverty, drug cartels, corrupt police forces and inflation to get on FFF.net and have an argument with you.

Oh... and trying to cross through Mexico to get through the US border illegally.

lol... I think I just got it. That was a poorly executed joke, wasn't it?

Yeah. It's pretty funny that hundreds of thousands of invaders have infiltrated the border at twice the rate they did last year because there is no wall and the government won't do anything about it.

Hilarious.

I gave you two reasons.

1) Trump is cheating on his taxes.

hemes-fred-trump.html

www.ais-cpa.com/tax-fraud-by-the-numbers-the-trump-timeline/

2) Trump bends his Presidential decisions to benefit his business.

Trump could prove that he is paying his taxes and prove he is not taking bribes if he would keep his promises to make his tax returns public and make his business a blind trust. Trump does not need permission from Congress to keep those two promises. I've noticed that born-again Republicans in Texas do not want Trump to keep those promises.

6ix, if it doesn't matter to you that Trump probably is not paying his taxes and it doesn't matter that Trump is probably taking bribes through his businesses, that says that you are a born-again Republican. Vote for Trump! MAGA!
