Why so many of President Donald Trump's aides lied to protect him in Russia investigations

The first lie – the first one that was a crime, at least – came on the fourth day of Donald Trump’s presidency, in a White House office down the hall from Trump’s own.

That day, a pair of FBI agents came to question Trump’s top national security aide, Mike Flynn, about his dealings with the Russian government. Flynn gave the agents a tour of his new spot in the new administration, interrupted at one point as Trump and some movers walked past discussing where to hang art on the walls. Then Flynn took them back to his corner office and calmly lied to them about conversations with Russia’s ambassador.

Flynn, agents later wrote, “did not parse his words or hesitate.” He simply lied.

The exchange was the start of a remarkable succession of lies over nearly two years by some of Trump’s closest political associates, told to federal agents, Congress and the public that distanced the president and his campaign from an investigation into whether his campaign participated in Russian efforts to disrupt the election that put him in office.

Whatever else special counsel Robert Mueller’s now-concluded investigation may reveal, it has devoted considerable attention to the Trump associates whose lies to lawmakers and investigators deflected attention from connections between Russia and the president’s campaign, and to a central question hanging over many of the charges Mueller has filed: Why did they lie?

Then it is funny that Trump's men are going to jail. Trump only goes to jail if the Senate sends him. Cohen, Flynn and Papadopoulos have pleaded guilty to making false statements. So has Manafort’s former deputy Rick Gates, and an attorney who worked with the pair, Alexander Van Der Zwaan.

One suggested he lied out of loyalty. Others appear to have been protecting the president. One, Michael Cohen, a former executive in Trump’s private business and his personal lawyer, said he lied because the president wanted him to.

“Everybody's job at the Trump Organization is to protect Mr. Trump. Every day most of us knew we were coming in and we were going to lie for him on something and that became the norm,” Cohen said in sworn testimony to a House committee Feb. 27. “And that's exactly what's happening right now in this country and it's exactly what's happening here in government.”

They also don't get that they've exposed themselves as trolls who care nothing about the crimes exposed. They only talk about collusion. If conspiracy is not proven then to them Trump is somehow vindicated. That level of ignorance is off the charts.

The rule of law does not include GOP Senators. What would the Senate do if Trump obstructed justice? The Senate could ignore obstruction or it could remove Trump from office. In the latter case, ordinary citizen Trump, the ex-President, goes to a criminal trial. Then jail. Trump did obstruct justice, but no Republican Senator will vote to remove Trump. Those Senators have already decided Trump is innocent and there is no rule of law that will force them to change their minds. Trump admits the allegations of collusion between his advisers and Russian officials played into sacking of FBI director in order to obstruct justice. But the Republican Senators have decided to ignore what they heard Trump say on TV:

If Trump got asked a second time about obstructing justice during an impeachment trial, his lawyers will craft a false statement for Trump to read, one that all GOP Senators can hide behind when they vote "Not Guilty". There is no rule of law forcing a Senator to admit he knows the President is lying under oath, although juries are expected to decide if a witness is lying and to not accept a liar's word as truth.

As I've said second, that level of ignorance is off the charts. This presidency is immersed in scandals. And you can bet Trump has few republican friends. He has made them crawl in public since his election. Their reputations are in taters. If they can, they will crucify Trump.

No election tampering
No working with the Russians ( leave that for Hillary and the DNC )

Everyone knows full well that most of those ' crimes ' were meaningless process crimes, misstatements which were turned into LYING to the FBI. If we judged Hillary by the same standard,( as well as most everyone in the FBI ) , the list of folks going to jail would be a lot longer today. Oddly, we don't see this happening.

Flynn and Papadopoulos were especially egregious and gross overreaches by the Federal govt. Papadopoulos was clearly a lower level no one who the FBI set up , outright.

That should concern and even scare the hell out of every law abiding American.

Fathom the hypocrisy of a government that requires every citizen to prove they are insured... but not everyone must prove they are a citizen

I don't believe Trump fears that GOP Senators will crucify him. Sen. Ted Cruz (GOP-TX) was running second to Trump in the primaries and Cruz got the full Trump disrespect/contempt treatment, but when Cruz looks into Mueller's report, he won't see anything rising to the level of impeachable offense. That is because Texas GOP voters don't see Trump as a crook. The only rule of law that might throw Trump out of the White House is the next General Election in 19 months, not the Senate and not Ted Cruz.
