Instead, I bought him an ice cream cone and told him to tell me everything. Then we sat at McDonalds and talked about sports, and frustration, and how crying is normal. We talked about how playing sports isn’t about being the best, but about growth. It’s about showing up and trying, really trying. It’s about gaining skills, and how your whole life will be like this: sports, school, work, family.

Then I asked him if he was going to quit soccer. He took a bite of his cone and said, “No. I’m going to keep trying.”

I didn't have a trust fund, and I was the wrong color to get a free ride.

I couldn't even get any FASFA assistance until I was 25, even though I had been on my own since I was 18 years old without taking outrageous steps to make my parents look like assholes in the eyes of the federal government by getting handwritten letters from individuals such as cops, priests, psychiatrists, etc. No matter how crap my parents did raising us, I wasn't going to do that.

Until half of our good jobs were shipped overseas and/or replaced with automation, it didn't matter. I've made quite a bit over $50k/year at several jobs in my life. Now I'm competing with a bunch of college graduates every year that were able to get even better jobs before but all have to settle for less. Not having a college degree didn't turn out to be a problem until well in my 30's.

Sure. I might be jealous of their easy chance at what I was never able to get, but I'm twice as smart as 90% of them, so you'll never find me jealous of their abilities other than being able to show them the worthless paper that is a college degree.

I'm not going to let you get me down either. I'm dealing with a lot right now, but I'm going to figure it out.

Here's a thought.... You could have PAID your way. Like Hubby did. Neuro disorder, childhood from hell... He sure didn't get no "Free Ride." When we met he was 30k in debt because of his degree, but we paid it off. He didn't sit around and whine about not getting a free ride. Hell, even my dad managed to switch careers at 47.

Oh, and they are paying $500 sign on bonuses at two companies here because they need people so bad. There's still a billion jobs in this country if you'd get off your ass.

Seriously, you "dealing with stuff" doesn't give you a free pass to make fun of kids who are "dealing with stuff."

So what that their brains are still developing? They're not kids at 18.

Shortly after that happens they get a few years before their body starts making downward progress without doing stuff to hold that tide back. By the time you're elderly, half of your friends that are still alive are going to act like children anyhow.

By the time you're 18, you're old enough to vote, old enough to go to war, old enough to buy cigarettes, old enough to buy booze and gamble in some states, old enough to get married, old enough to go off on your own to college, old enough to work any job in the country and run any machinery that is deemed illegal to operate by minors.

Then there's the fact that there's no limits on what age you can make the very adult decision to fuck whoever you want so long as they're age appropriate.

Just because the generation currently graduating college has been coddled all of their lives to the point that a great deal of them come back home to continue leaching off of their parents when they get their useless degrees in liberal arts and finally figure out that nothing is fair in the world, that doesn't mean they weren't adults when they were 18.

Face facts, buttercup. You're an old lady now and your kid is almost an adult herself.

Maybe you didn't teach her any lessons that will make her strong after college so she'll fulfill your fantasy of being able to have your "kid" living with you forever, but that doesn't mean that she's not going to be an actual adult very soon.
