At the time of founding, Jews were A TRIBE, like any othe tribe. And they still identify as a tribe through bloodlines. And being a tribe surrounded by so many other tribes, they had to distingiush themselves in some fashion
Some tribes used tatoos, dress, religion and language to separate themselves from other tribes. altho they were all essentially the same: living in the same area and making their living the same way (farming, sheep herding etc). Apparently, you're only a Jew if your mother was a Jew, at least, to some Jews. And being an exclusive group, they don'y generally go around trying to bring outsiders into their group i.e. they're not a proselytizing relgion like, say, Christians, who went aroudn trying to convert people.
