No, I honestly don't think it was...but you couldn't tell it by some of the writing (and - let's face it - some the acting). It was quite the chuckle-fest in spots - particuarly, as I recall, in scenes with Sting and/or Kyle MacLachlan. And that business with the heart plug? Man - laugh? I thought I'd die.
But it was a pleasure, to me, just watching some of the actors, principally Brad Dourif's Piter DeVries (the Mentat's Mentat) and Kenneth McMillan's Baron Harkonnen. It's sort of got categorized with me under the same heading as Flash, though where Dune ended up unintentionally funny in spots, Flash was intentionally funny in spots, and generally funny all over (intended or not). Or maybe it's just the von Sydow Connection™. Oddly, I like it - but ONLY because I'd just read the book before hearing there was a movie coming out, so I had the background and intricacies down pretty well before going in. It *IS* a rather difficult movie for the uninitiated.
And parts of it are just horrible. Honestly, who the hell ever thought Sting could be an actor? "I *will* kill him!"
And who knew that Paul's little sister, Alia, was going to grow up to be such a beauty (Alicia Witt)?

I'm not sure WHY I never saw it, but as for why I won't, it's been built up too much, too many times, by too many people. There's no way it could POSSIBLY live up to my expectations of it now. So I refuse to see it, because it's better in my imagination (I've seen bits and pieces, but never the whole thing).

Granted, The Princess Bride is such a popular iconic 80's film that it's hard to be part of the "me too" bandwagon.
The actual princess part of the movie is rather drab. Aside from a few good zingers between her, and Wesley it really isn't much of a story.
What makes the movie is Inigo Montoya played by Mandy Patinkin. Classic tale of revenge about a drunken master swordsman(The book tells his entire origin, and is much more in-depth about the character). Also, enough funny one-liners to last a year.
I wouldn't miss this film if I were you. Trust me my friends over-hyped Spinal Tap to absurd heights. I almost skipped it forever. Reluctantly watched it with one of them, and was a changed man.
Oh, and Alicia Witt is the hottest Red head on the planet. Good call.

Crap - you may have trapped me. You uttered the magic words "Mandy Patinkin". I'm powerless to resist his acting talents. Loved him in Alien Nation (the original movie); loved him in Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me, and Criminal Minds, but it drives me nuts that he always seems to bail out just before the shows take a steep nosedive in overall quality. Is it because he leaves, or does he leave because he sees where they're headed, and can't abide?
Now I have to watch it.

That's certainly a given. "Bogus Journey" IS a sequel, after all, and fell into the "not as good as" category. Though it didn't completely suck, either.

Well, if I'd known THAT was the magic word!!! Pitinkin is incredible in Princess Bride. Simply awesome and he has some of the best lines in the entire movie. One line is so iconic that, even now, when he does concerts (he's an accomplished piano player, too, ya know) people start chanting that he MUST say that line. And when he does it gets thunderous applause. So a friend tells me, at least. He was there, I wasn't. My friend was SUCH a bonehead, that after the concert, met Pitinkin backstage. And who does he call and put Pitinkin on the phone with? HIS MOTHER. Who has NO idea who Pitinkin is. I just about killed him.

Patinkin's quite an accomplished singer, too. There's not much in the entertainment biz that he CAN'T do. Song-n-dance man, funny man, serious man, piano man... He's an all-around Renaissance man!
