Maybe if I'd been younger when they came out, I'd like them more. Don't know. And the hype around Ghostbusters definitely led me to expect more.
If it's any consolation, there really aren't many movies from that time frame that I *do* like. Spinal Tap and Amadeus stand out...

Hmmm...I'm guessing Weird Science wasn't your cup of tea, either? Not that they're considering a sequel to that. That I know of.

Ya know, oddly enough, I *LOVED* Weird Science. And Real Genius. And Creator. Go figure...
Heck, I even liked Stripes. Loved Caddyshack. But Ghostbusters just didn't bring the funny, as far as making ME laugh, at least.

Ya know, maybe it's Ivan Reitman as director. I mean, Stripes I liked, but didn't love. Meatballs was kinda cute, but not great. And pretty much everything else he directed just sucked balls, from Twins right on up through My Super Ex-Girlfriend.
Why does anyone keep letting this guy make movies?
I was trying to pin down what it was that went wrong with Ghost Busters. The writers I know can do good stuff (Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis). The actors are all capable enough. It seems to come down to a really bad director. Maybe John Landis should've helmed it. He was hotter then, with stuff like Animal House, Blues Brothers, American Werewolf In London, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, Trading Places, Three Amigos...
Yup, I think it's the director.

Would it be further heresy to admit here that I've never seen The Princess Bride, and likely never will?
I'm not sure WHY I never saw it, but as for why I won't, it's been built up too much, too many times, by too many people. There's no way it could POSSIBLY live up to my expectations of it now. So I refuse to see it, because it's better in my imagination (I've seen bits and pieces, but never the whole thing).

Just watched Ghostbusters with my 19 year old very geeky daughter. I've never heard so much laughing. I think she really enjoyed it.
She loves the Princess Bride as I do, but Stripes Sunday night barely got a cackle out of her.
As you see I'm showing her all the classics. LOL

Quite possible heresy, yes. But I don't blame you for not wanting to see it now. I sometimes have that same reaction myself to movies that people hype to me. Sometimes I end up watching, sometimes not. Sometimes I do like, sometimes not. I can only further your excuse by proclaiming it's one of my all-time favorites. Has been ever since I saw it in the theater. In college my friends and I could practically quote the whole movie line for line.
The other movies you mentioned are pretty good, too. Real Genius is another one of the classics that I could watch over and over again. Val Kilmer at his best, when he let himself go and be FUNNY.

I watched that in college with a bunch of friends and we laughed through the whole thing . . . I don't think it was supposd to be funny, was it?
