Oh oh me me me! I noticed. It's one of my few topics of conversation I can throw out there at happy hour tonight. I don't think many other people will care about fantasy poker results from the world series of poker. Hi all...

I have successfully moved over to Burbank, and internship starts monday. Yay.

On the downside, I have no internet for the moment, alas, so until it's fixed I shall post sparsely if at all. Blah I was not expecting this part. At least my roommate is kind enough to let me use his.

And to answer a question on the previous thread... yeah, I am a freshman technically, but because of all those AP classes I took I'll be junior standing once the paperwork goes through on this past quarter. Which is why I can do the internship at all. It's funny because this was never ever a use of AP credits I thought of when I did them. But such is life. :-)

Well I feel all kinds of productive. So far today I've had a job interview, changed my insurance, gotten a new drivers license and plates for Nevada, ditched AT&T and gotten new cell and better , cheaper service, copied a key, ordered sod to be delivered on Wednesday so we can have a lawn, and started cooking the Friday feast:)

Lol congratulations on doing so much. Myself I went shopping for food and such, so now I can eat. This living-on-your-own business is funkyiful. Dorms don't count, at all. But yeah, one shopping trip. I was going to write in seclusion like a pro, but then I got another shot at the internets (roommate went to Trader Joe's) and now I can play the last episode of Sam N' Max. Oh distractions seem to find me no matter what I do. But then again, I'm on summer vacation for... three days, maybe that's my excuse. :)

And it is a tad ironic that I end up posting more because I have less time online, but that's just the way of it. ;-D

I stopped in at my local coffeeshop / bookstore to get a cup of joe and relax a little before going home. And just like Christmas the proprietor told me the book I ordered came in.

I hold, ever so gently, in my hands "General George Washington: A Military Life".

I am such an avid military student. This is one of the few books I have found that gives the complete history of George Washington's military career. I only discovered its existance a couple of weeks ago.

So what ever interests you may have, I hope you are greeted with a new discovery that brightens your day. Friday the 13th be damned.

Hmm that's not the explaination I've heard. The one I have heard is that the day of the huge assualt and murder took place on Friday the 13th ( which it did) and because Templars and Masons are spread throughout our culture the horror of the day lives on

I sympathize with your sting, as I am highly allergic. Once had a little toe swell up 'till I had two "big toes"I have heard rumors about putting a penny on a sting as well as taking Benedryl (liquid for quickness) and also grinding up an actual aspirin and appying with ice...I once tried meat tenderizer, believe it or not- it did help...

For me I'd say I would want to relive the daddy days ( we have 4 kids in my family and each of us got one Saturday a month do go with by ourselves with dad and choose a fun activity and do it together)

Super cool movie style I'd probably go back to sometime when I went to an arcade. Arcades were so awesome back in the day. You'd just walk in to this wide selection of fun & challenging games or all different types. Today it's like 30 racing games, 10 light gun games, DDR and maybe some fighting games. Pssh back in the day there were all sorts of different games to choose from.

Going back and having the ability to change things I'd have to go write myself a note to be real nice to a chick in my grade school. Cause when she ended up at the same college as me she was all hot as heck. I was never friends with her in grade school though so not much of an in to be all "hey remember grade school. good times."

Yep I was a huge arcade game junkie as a kid. There was a time we were headed to Chuck E Cheese as a kid and we got in a pretty bad car accident and while they paramedics are there tending to my parents I was like "wait a minute does this mean we aren't going to Chuck E Cheese? I was fine with the whole thing up until I figured that part out.

Ponder from the other day: I miss coming in late afternoon from walking all day to shoot rabbits. Mom would have soup or stew or beans all hot on the stove with bread under a damp towel. It was a lucky day to get the first piece of bread.

DTH try this then...you really can't mess this up. It's rolls you make in the blender

1 cup milk
2 eggs
2 teaspoons salt
1/6 cup sugar
1/2 cup corn or light oil
4 teaspoons baking powder
Flour

Put everything but flour in the blender and blend. Add flour gradually and blend until it looks like thick pancake batter. Pour batter into greased muffin tin cups. Bake at 375 degrees until light brown and puffy

Ok now for the real and nifty bread rcipe

2 cups water
4 teaspoons salt
1 cup sugar
1 cup Crisco or similar vegetable shortening
1/4 cup lukewarm water( with a pinch of sugar in it)
3 tablespoons yeast
2 eggs
5 cups flour ( may need a bit more than this)

Put the 1/4 cup water with pinch of sugar in a small bowl and sprinkle yeast on top. Set it aside. heat the 2 cups of water until it hurts your finger. Remove from heat and add salt, sugar, and Crisco. break 2 eggs into the mixing bowl and add the water, crisco, salt, sugar mixture. Add flour and mix. when the mixture is lukewarm add the yeast water. Keep adding flour until the dough is stiff and not very sticky. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rise. Push it down and let it rise again. Knead the dough for about a minute. Shape and place in bread pans. Cover and let it rise again. Bake 350 degrees until brown ( about 40 minutes)

HUGS DTH see you're not a bad cook, you just had bad instructions. I had that happen with a cake recipe mom gave me. She listed ingredients and quantities, but forgot directions. I tried to wing it and it sucked:)

Pissaladiere

Mix 275g strong plain flour, a sachet of yeast (7g) and a pinch of salt. Add in 2 tsp olive oil and 250 ml warm water. Mix, knead out on a floured surface, then dump back in the bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave in the warm for an hour.

Meanwhile cook down 1.5 kg onions (about six, usually) finely sliced in olive oil, maybe a little butter if you like, and a good bunch of herbs (you want to take this out later, so tie 'em together) You want a good, thick onion mush. Season as wished.

Turn the dough out, knead it again, then push it out on an oiled baking tray. Put a thin layer of anchovy paste (bash a couple up in their oil) then the onions, leaving a border. Criss cross with slices of anchovy fillet, and faff about putting black olives in the gaps. Leave it while your oven gets to its max heat, then bake for 15 -20 minutes.

'Course, if folks are wussy about anchovies, up until that point, you got a perfectly good thick-crust pizza base...

But if I had my time over again, I'd be braver. A lot less inclined to try and please other people - it only leads to ulcers.

I think that's the wrong approach. You don't have to be combative to get them to stop. You have to show them that they have no effect on you. I was bullied and picked on to some extent but I would just let it roll off my back or throw them off by agreeing with them or something. By the end of gradeschool I was friends with the bullies and same thing happened by the end of high school. I always point to my senior year of high school when me (nerd), a football jock (guy tried to push me into a gym locker freshman year), a cheerleader and a druggie all partnered up (of our own free will) on a class project and it wasn't even so I'd do all the work. I was the biggest slacker really.

Anyway point is something about catching flies with honey or something. Note: don't give bullies honey. They'll probably pour it on you or something.

That's kind of what I meant (apart from the odd violent fantasy). I was quite emotional as a child and used to get really upset by the bullying - which of course made it worse.
I've had to toughen up since then (oh so much this first year of teaching), that I think I could have just laughed most of the bad stuff off were it to happen again.
Kind of jealose that you had that maturity to start with!

Everything comes with a price though. I think most of that maturity came from when my parents got divorced. I was 7 at the time and had to move to a totally new state. Manual labour very bad...Can't even do light labour at moment. I have managed to pop a rib out up under my shoulder-blade (?!)- putting it back in was immense fun.

I feel rather like that Nordic goddess of the Underworld, Hel - the whole left side of my body is crap; broken and rehealed oddly, dislocated, muscles connected wrong, just rubbish.

Plus side...I have a kitchen. Only I'm too broken to be able to heave all my heavy pans into it.

Woo, got me internets back up, and with the help of some of my awesome friends from school, the crisis in which i screwed up (or thought I screwed up) my roommate's computer/internet has been more or less resolved. Yay. So life is better now.

Internship first day was grand, although orientation-y and dull in a way. But I'm looking forward to work tomorrow. yay. stuff to do and a place to do it and all that good stuff. Shall be glorious.

And it turns out I may well be going to Comic-Con, ironically enough. Which is exciting, i've never been to a proper convention. No BDH guests or anything, but still, twill be fun, and as long as I work at the Cartoon Network booth for a bit, they pay for teh hotel. Woo. Internship coolness. So that'll be cool, mehopes.

Childhood stuff to relive? Uh.... cant think of much, i tend to progressively get happier that i'm not in the past as time goes on, so there's that, although I do miss the theater days in high school already. Yeah that's about the only part i'd actually WANT to relive. That and my childhood friend who moved to switzerland nine years back. Yeah, gotta have pasts n' all that.

Argh, i need to get myself a chair, this wall is not good for back support.

I am going to bed folks, but I remembered my promise to myself to check in here every day! I am so thrilled to see old friends in here, Hey Whitefall! I am so excited for you that you got the internship! Wooo Hooo! Hugs Honey!

It's just lovely to see folk like SpaceAngel (yeah I know - but you'll always be my 'Space Angel' to me! Remember!) and Emma, and Gee, and NVG & my own Li'l sis, MsB... some of you I talk with all the time, but there's so many of you I miss!

I agree with what's been said about bullying, BTW... I was bullied ("gee, really? You mean you were the weird kid who marched to the beat of your own drum, Magda? That sounds so unlikely... NOT!") Intelectually I knew it was their problem and not mine, and I used to try very hard to not let them see how much it hurt me... but I think the scars are still there at times. I later realised that I was bullied by one of my teachers, though I don't remember properly being aware of it at the time... it's hard to stand up to someone who sends you out of the room, then tells the rest of the class that if they want to be my friend they will get the same treatment I do from her... There are still days when I wonder what I would say to that teacher if I saw her today... I probably would ask her if her life is happier now? I would tell her I pity her for being so weak as to have to bully a 10 year old who trusted her and looked up to her. I would tell her that no matter how bad things get in her life, it is nothing compared to the complete helplessness of a 10 year old who can't seem to make friends and is miserable and lonely and doesn't even realise that she is the victim of bullying.

Then I would look her in the eye and tell her, with complete honesty, that I forgive her. I do, because it says more about how she felt complete lack of control of her life at the time than what it said about me!

I am stronger than that!

But no, I wouldn't go back to those days for all the money in the world!

On the subject of writers and food - bloke called Frank Tallis. His main character is a psychiatrist in turn of the century Vienna - the description of the cakes in the books makes you climb the walls with greed. Impossible to read without doughnuts etc to hand. (But really good on odd Freudian crime...)

odds - a good cookbook, if you have a limited kitchen/budget/skillset etc is Nigel Slater's 'Real Fast Food'
