has anyone read the enders game series at all - it is awsome - i had to read it back in school and i have always loved it

well i havent read it but my husband absolutely loves it and tries to get me to read all the time.

It starts good, and is an excellent example of his early writing - I'm thinking of "A Planet Called Treason" if you want similar books to the first of the Ender's Game books. But...
Then it turns into the Book of Mormon, though not as blatantly as his Earth series. As far as I can tell he's been on that kick ever since then - tried reading an alternate reality book he did, but again, preachy humanity-is-lost-without-Jesus stuff.

Is this the Orson Scott Card stuff? Read somewhere that he's a 'Firefly' fan, I think. Husband is an OSC fan, have to say I'm not so keen.

I'm so sick of ruttin' Card. Ender's Game is a brilliant book, but he's milked it and, as GrrArg put it so nicely, turned it into religious babble. Instead of the books getting succesively better, they get worse. I threw "Ender's Shadow" across the room and since then I have been done with him.
I made it longer than my dad. He was done at Xenocide.
Yeah, he's a Firefly fan I hear, but it amazes me that such a tolerant show would appeal to him (have you read his essay on "family structure"? It's sickening!)

What are all of you guys talking about? Obviously the Ender part of the series becomes more religious and such. Didn't care for them much. But how is the Shadow series religious or mormon? None of the characters are religious! Well, except for Peter's parents (are they? can't remember). Anyway, i loved them. Particularly the Shadow series.

OH! Now i see, you guys are thinking of Carlotta. Oh well, i don't really see it as preachy or religious. I was more fascinated by the unification of the world part of the story. I always liked Peter (well, except for at the beginning of Ender's Game, but even at the middle to end i loved the character).

I was actually thinking of Children of the mind and that whole "God-spoken" thing, and how it was better to remain a slave to that than accept a freedom offered you.
As for the Shadow series, my beef with that is a little different. Although there is the biblical reference in there of "life for knowledge" etc, my real problem was that I just thought it was BAD.

The whole gorram book talks about how ruttin' smart Bean is. This huge long setup; Bean can do anything, Bean is probably smarter than Ender, Bean is basically the second-in-command; if Ender cracks, he takes over. And he feels fine about that, if I remember correctly.
So we get to the final battle and Ender isn't saying anything and Bean starts thinking "Oh no, they're going to transfer command to me! What do I do! I have nothing! I can't think of any way to win this! Oh no! Oh no!"
WTF? This genetically-modified super genious, this expert on survival, quickest in Ender's class, and he can't think of anything?! That seriously irritated me.

So yeah. Done. I would not recommend reading beyond Ender's Game to anyone.

Orson Scott Card is one of my very favorite authors. Also he's a browncoat. There's an extensive interview with him on "Done the Impossible: The Fans' Tale of Firefly and Serenity." (watch it.)

Ender's Game series is amazing. Also the "spinoff" Bean series. I personally prefer Ender's series. but I like Ender's Shadow and the latest Bean one... Shadow Puppets if I remember correctly. The other Bean ones I found a bit boring to tell the truth.

It is true that Card lapses into Mormon stuff... but whatever, I see past it. He's really one of the most wonderful authors ever.

On an not-so-space note: read "Lost Boys" one of his best non-Ender books.

Further note: There is supposed to be a movie that melds Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. It's been in the works (kinda) for some years. Card is apparently working on the sreenplay.

I liked Ender's Game.
Up until Children of the Mind, I just couldn't fully get through it. The whole thing of Ender creating clones of Peter and Valentine, the whole aiua thingy. It just got too confusing for me, and I dropped it.

I liked the imagery that Card created, and the unique universe. Maybe if I had been into the relgious undertones at the time, it might have been something I'd have pursued a bit more.
