SUPPORT AN INDEPENDENT (AUTHOR - THAT IS) Hi Guys, Some of you old timers might remember me from the olden days (also know as "days of yore" or even "Auld Lang Syne" - lets just say it was back before Serenity came out) when I used to frequent FFF. I am now a so-called "Indie author" looking for some support from my fellow Browncoats. What I’m doing is this: I have the first 10 chapters of my near-future science fiction novel “Emergent Behavior” previewed on a site called Authonomy.com which is run by HarperCollins Publishing. For my illustration poetry project I have to write 10 poems all of them being about a similar theme. I have to have images too, whether it be photos, drawings, paintings, magazine cutouts, objects, whatever as long as it relates to the theme. Well guess what I'm picking to be my theme? Well.....Firefly of course!!!! :biggrin: I'm going to write one poem on each character and draw a picture of them. Adding maybe some pictures from the web as well! The left over poem will be the shows theme song, since at least one poem cannot be your own (and I'm sure song lyrics will do.) Not quite writer's block, but I have been finding these past few chapters of PROSPERO'S LEGACY difficult. I'm just hoping my readers aren't finding them hard going! It seems such a lot of exposition at the moment, but that's pretty much all behind me now. Just a little while longer, and the action really starts. It's all my own fault, of course. I've been leading up to this story for a long while, and kept putting it off. I'd originally intended a version about a year ago (!) but other stories got in the way. When I finally realised I couldn't procrastinate (love that word) any longer, I had to actually draw a web to try and tie all the strands together! In case anyone is wondering, this isn't the end anyway, so to speak. I have a lot more ideas for the crew of Serenity, from funnies to fluff to more angst, but nowhere near as complicated (at least so far) as this! Thanks for listening, and keep flyin'. Jane :kiss:

Two things to comment on... Firstly the US Election. The peoples voice was loud and clear, I pray that Barack Obama and Joe Biden do a good job running the country. There's alot of work ahead... Secondly, my favorite sci-fi author has died. (No not Joss!) We'll miss you Michael Crichton. He had another book due to be released in December, which will close a chapter in my own life that saw me doing silly things like skipping work to read Sphere. (if you haven't done so go get Jurassic Park and Sphere right now. They are riveting from cover to cover.) I've read almost all of his books. (I own most of them and have immensely enjoyed almost all of the movies and TV shows based on his writings. (Except ER...Sorry hospitals are too dramatic in real life to enjoy as "fiction".) I pray for Crichton family as they mourn their loss.

God, i am a loser. I was on my new laptop in my room, hiding from my mother at 4am and i was bored so i was about to post a new blog...and then i fell asleep as i usually do after being awake for almost 24 hours. Then i woke up this morning and continued to hide from my mother and finally, 12 hours later, i decided to finally post this. Wow, i'm slow. So, i'm still obsessed with Twilight and the movie's coming out in 13 days so the entire fanbase is on edge. As we all know, all true Browncoats should own the movie Serenity. But some've us have got mor'n a few moneyless and motheaten pockets, are far from home, or are currently loaning them out to spread the shiny. Thus the nearest place many look in a pinch is Youtube. Which removes Serenity on a regular basis, and frequently our beloved series also. There’s got to be some ingenious system a’ keepin’ these things up and flying under the radar. Has anyone noticed that other movies stay up for years and their attatched corporations couldn’t care less, while Serenity has a mighty hard time staying up more than two months before the brave soul’s account is deleted or forcibly scoured of the offending material? For now I say we create channels and keywords with planet names (or something equally unrecognizable yet related) and move 'em monthly. That way the ‘liance will have less of a clue what they’re lookin’ for in their spidersearch keywords, but we’ll know where we’re touchin’ down: Persephone, Whitefall, Sihnon, Londinium, Hera, Ariel etc. Any ideas? I applaud those posters who keep movin' and postin' for the benefit of Browcoats with net access. You can’t stop the signal. :wink:

I originally posted a review for the new Blu-ray release of Firefly on www.bluray.com but hey! I'll post it here as well! I’m sure there are many fans out there who have been anticipating this Blu-ray release for some time now. Being one of those fans, I picked it up bright and early this morning at my local Best Buy and have reviewed most of the set’s 3-discs. The 1080p transfer is a welcome upgrade from its DVD release several years ago, but the image lacks by more recent TV Blu-ray releases. There is slight edge enhancement throughout and special effects shot in particular are a rather soft. Black levels are never right on either especially in darker scenes. Despite what some people are saying on a few boards out there, this show was shot on film and transferred to HD shortly after. The audio however is finally being mixed in 5.1 (dts-HD none the less). While not overly aggressive, the surround sound is a nice upgrade as well from the shows original 2.0 dolby digital track. As for special features, all the originals from the DVD are ported over here in standard def. There are two new exclusives on this set: a 24 minute Reunion clip with Joss Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk and Ron Glass and a new audio commentary for the episode “Our Mrs. Reynolds”. Both are fun additions and I’m sure fans will enjoy seeing and hearing these four together again. The $60 price tag may be a lot for a few fans but I’m going to recommend this to all the browncoats out there. For those of you who still haven’t gotten on board with this show and love Blu-ray, I also recommend it. Even if this set is lacking in picture quality, you won’t be disappointed by the show’s entertainment value.

The new Naruto game for xbox 360 its supposed to be part two of Naruto rise of the ninja. It loooks good and all and i can't wait for it to come out i even downloaded the demo off my xbox to play it. The Demo was pretty cool but as you know its just a demo and doesn't let you play much of the game. Some other good games that our out right now our Saints Row 2, DBZ: Burst Limit,Prince of Persia and Gears of War 2. I haven't played any of these except Saints Row 2 because i bought it and i played the demo of DBZ:Burst Limit thats the only two i have played besides that nothing else to report today. -Just a random rant brought on by boredom- I like my standalone fics better than my series fics. In a series, there's always a grander purpose, it's always leading up to something, and that's great and all, but it makes the tone a bit different. The standalones, on the other hand, are just brief insights into the character's mind or feelings... and I don't know, they just seem better to me lol. I've been trying to bring some of the voice I put into my standalones into my series, and I hope it's working. The other thing might be that I tend to pick one moment and write about it in my standalones, and my series are obviously about a larger period of time. Anyway, that's just my rant lol.

Not this site, obviously. You're all wonderful here. No, I'm talking specifically about Supernatural.tv. A few months ago I had the misfortune of deciding to have a look at TWOP and I have to say that is one of the bitchiest sites I have ever been on. Now SN.TV is turning the same way. Which is a shame because it used to be a nice forum. Now it seems to be overrun by petty bitches who seem to do nothing but whine and complain about every little thing. You have the Sam fans complaining about Dean, the Dean fans complaining about Sam, people whining that the show isn't as good as the first season (what the hell are they on about? I love the show but the first season was the weakest of them all). Now I'm all for a bit of debate as long as it is civil bbut these people are turning the site into a place that I don't want to go to. For example, last night I commented on a person's post using an example from Buffy (I thought it was a perfectly valid point) and this person commented back saying that he/she didn't care because they'd never seen Buffy. This person just completely tore apart my post just because I slightly disagreed with theirs. I'd post exactly what they did write but I can't go back and read it again because I'm still fuming. And its not the first tiume this particualr person has been bitchy about one of my posts. And it's not just the posters. The mods are useless (You rarely ever see them in the controversial topics) and the super mods are dictatorial and too full of their own self importance. They immediately close down topics they don't like and leave the rest even though they are full of bithcing and backstabbing. It's really starting to get to me. When I was a teenager I watched Dana Carvey on Saturday Night Live play a character called "Grumpy Old Man". Whilst in character he would rail on younger generations and proclaim loudly how much harder life was in his day, all in the spirit of comedy. I'd compare Dana's character to conversations of older men in my local barber shop, or at church gatherings, and I resolved I'd never become such a person when I grew up. I understood my youth culture well, and decided I'd always be in tune with it. Now I'm just over 30 and, for the first time, looking down on younger kids. I'm observing the Generation Y crowd in high school and college. I see the new generaton of kids coming after, a generation of children sometimes refered to as the Millennals. With all their technology and devices they have it so easy! And thus, I have become Dana Carvey's grumpy old man. Please follow me through my rant. Perhaps you will laugh. Compared to my childhood, kids these days live in a damn utopia! 1. When I was a kid we had no internet. There were no fast computers. We had green-screen pieces of shit and the Commodore 64. Sometimes your Commodore would crash when you were playing a game....or during a program load.....or if the wind hit it wrong. When this happened you'd be graced with a Blue screen filled with illogical computer code and there was nothing you could do but re-boot. 2. We didn't have multi-terabyte hard drives or hand held thumb drives. We had 64K of computer memory. And great big floppy discs. They were bulky and stupid and easily damaged. You could accidently erase them with a magnet. Or if you set them on your external disc drive when it was running. When they did work you had to be careful you didn't fill them with too much information. We actually counted how many bytes we had to work with! 3. We had no email. If you wanted to send someone a message you had to pick up a pen. And then use paper. After that you had to mail it into the USPS and it often took more than 2 days to arrive at it's destination. Sometimes it got lost or arrived damaged! 4. We didn't have wikipedia or blackberries with which to access it. If you wanted to know something you had to go to a library. And use a freaking card catalog. My elementry school taught an entire class in the library on how to use those stupid cards. If your book was checked out you had to wait. If it was stolen you'd never get to know your answer. 5. We had no MP3's or torrent sites from which to steal music. We stole our tunes the old fashioned way: from music stores. We stuck CDs in our jackets and ran past security! Or we'd try to record a song from the radio and if we were lucky the goddamn DJ wouldn't talk over part of it. 6. We didn't have cell phones. We had one phone per household. It had a cord. Sometimes people or pets would trip over it when in use. Sometimes the cord would knock stuff off tables. And we didn't have features on our phones like call waiting, or multiple lines. We had one line, and if someone was on it, the new caller got a busy signal. We didn't have caller ID either. When the phone rang you'd have no idea who it was. It could be your school, your mom, your drug dealer, a collections agent, your bookie...you just didn't know! 7. We didn't have Xbox 360's or Playstations with awesome lifelike graphics. We had 8-bit nintendos. Or worse, the stupid atari 2600! With strange games like Yar's Revenge that made no sense! Your guy was a goddamn brown square! You had to actually use your imagination! There were no multiple levels or awesome ending animations. It was just one screen forever! And you could never win! The game just kept getting harder and faster until you DIED! Just like LIFE!! 8. Arcade games didn't cost multiple dollars like Dance Dance Revolution. They were 25 cents. Today I had this guy phone up asking about his father in laws loan. No matter how many times I told him I couldn't discuss it without his father in laws authority he just wouldn't listen. He said he was going to report me to the LTSB head office; which really doesn't bother me because I am not going to break data protection for anyone no matter how much they threaten. As much as I hate my job I don't want to be fired. I even helped him along by spelling my surname. He then said he was going to phone up saying he was his father in law so I sent an e mail across the floor warning everyone in case he did, he he he moron. after hearing about the shuttle astronaut this week. Among the stuff they're doin' up there, they're cleaning and lubing a big rotary joint bearing that's full of metal shavings from where it's been grinding on itself. I've worked 30 years as a maintenance mechanic, and done at least my share of screwed-up bearings full of crap, even if smaller and not so high in the air. So the astronaut-gal's grease gun freaking *B*L*E*W* *U*P* inside her tool bag. Now I ain't ever had one explode,but I've had the top come off a couple, or hoses fail, or something screw up while changing cartridges, and I gotta tell ya, it's a *M*E*S*S*. Sticky, slippery gunk all over everything, and ya try to clean it up, and it just gets spread around, gets on yer hands or gloves, and all over everything you touch, ya ain't got near enough rags to clean it all up. But she kept on working, and eventually relaxed her grip for just a second, and the tool bag got away from her, took off in its own personal orbit. And I emphathize with that completely-- I can't work on top of a 6 foot ladder without dropping wrench, screwdriver, hammer, one right after another, usually 'bout 3 minutes apart. And then I gotta climb down, pick it up, climb back up , get my focus going again, and then drop something else. And being near-sighted since I was a kid, and now gettin' far-sighted because I'm gettin' ol--that is-- not so young-- means I gotta be taking my glasses off, or puttin' 'em back on, or changin' to the other pair, and keepin' track of just where I set 'em down after I took 'em off last time. So I feel better about being me- even highly educated and trained folks in my line of work make goofs and drop things. At least when I do it, I'm not polluting outer space, or adding to the orbiting junk navigational hazards. And a greatly smaller number of folks notice it when I screw up. It doesn't make the front pages of newspapers, or get flashed all over the Internet.

A few nights ago I woke up with a sore on the side of my leg that I thought I had just scratched the shit out of during the night in my sleep. Oh no, SO Oh no, I was wrong. I fell heavily asleep tonight content and happy from celebrating my brothers engagement and by that I mean completely shit faced, in fact I still am a little drunk as I write this. Waking up at 2am I desperately needed some water so I jumped out of bed as I do off the end because my bed just jams in my room and the walls are practically on the sides, and got a drink. Falling back into bed (because it’s easer) I began to tidy up my sheets and obviously rustled ‘Russ’ (That’s what I named him) awake because he started spidering about. Russ was a huntsman about the size of a bottle cap. I think he was a huntsman, I didn’t really ask. After realising I was now shaking from fear and not the alcohol left in my system I bolted from my room. Then I thought in my slightly drunk state that I didn’t want to wake anyone else to come get rid of a spider (because that would seem pathetic) and would have to do it myself. I grabbed the largest shoe I owned and proceeded to death stare Russ for about 10 minutes. I don’t know what was wrong with me but I couldn’t kill him. Not out of fear, mostly because I didn’t want to. He didn’t deserve to die just because he ended up in a bed with me. I could justify killing a few people if that was the case. I had to get him off my bed and outside so I could get back in my bed and go to sleep. I went back to the kitchen turning every light on as I went because clearly there was the possibility of hundreds of spiders waiting for the attack and found a container with a lid. Back hovering around the base of my bed I placed the container over Russ and held it down so he couldn’t squeeze under the edges and again call his friends and attack me. This was good, there was now a barrier between my bed buddy and me but I could hear him scurrying around the edges under the container which I really didn’t like. With one hand still on the container I reached for my cd player and turned on whatever cd was in there and boosted the volume just enough to cover the noise but not loud enough to wake the house. If they were to come in now I would look quite stupid drunkenly holding a container over a spider playing music at 2.30 in the morning with no pants on muttering to myself to gain the strength to save Russ rather than Squish him. Not knowing how to now get Russ off my bed I remembered how my dad use to get huntsman spiders out the house when I was younger. The very few times he didn’t just kill them. I placed the heaviest object in reach (My shoes from earlier) on the container to go find a piece of paper which I would then slide under the container to lift Russ off my bed and save myself and hopefully my dignity. Although if I wanted to do that I wouldn’t write about it. Anyway, with Russ in his new temporary home I lifted him to certain freedom and walked outside, placed the container on the ground. After actually counting to 3, because this would help the situation, I removed the container and ran (jumped, skipped, freaked out a little whatever) back to the house. Deciding I didn’t need the piece of paper anymore I’ve left It outside and am now back in my freshly searched through bed, with pants on, defrosting and trying to get this experience out of my system so I can fall back asleep. I know the odds of another spider in my bed are slim but that little voice in the back of my head that resembles one of my brothers at the moment keeps saying ‘What about the mutant eggs it layed?’ Or ‘What if he gets back in?’ I don’t think I have ever been more awake or sober at; well it’s now 3.28 in the morning. Being a grown up is hard.

NiHowdy, y’all. Yes, that greeting is intentional and applies well to this entry. Yes, I am aware that one pronunciation means ‘Hello ground’ in Chinese. In English it makes no sense either. But in Browncoat, it is a blended form of 'Hello firefly fans!” On with the show: Recently, I was reading a blog discussing the American obsession with the “exotic”, whether from primitive or advanced societies, and finding that 'exoticness fix' in other cultures such as those of the continents Asia and Africa. Okay, I buy that, I think it is a trend. Their next statement, however, made me angry in its lack of what I call 'broadsight' (aka seeing the big picture). That statement said that we--I am American, and therefore easily offended :wink:-- were essentially ‘raping’ those cultures (lots of sexually related language in that blog, gotta wonder what the blogger usually thinks about) because we Americans like to stick our noses into other people’s cultures, and get all enthusiastic about something we know less about than those of the culture that it came from or was inspired by. I will admit that this is frequently the case, and it annoys even me, since I consider myself more'culturally aware' than a lot of my countryfolk. But I have another possibly offensive opinion on the flipside of the coin. It coalesced when I began doing some thinking: I think I have every right to “fetishize”(in the blogger's terms) whatever culture I want—here’s why: in this context, ‘fetishize’ means to take selected parts of the culture and make them ‘cool’ or ‘in’, to talk about them, influence them or ape them with less right and less understanding than citizens of that country/culture. To say "Hey, we're not in Rome, or even geographically close to Rome, but look at what the Romans are doing--that's über-cool!" (yes, again intentional.) Isn’t that exactly what much of the ‘rest’ of the world has been doing(or moving towards)for at least the last 50 years with respect to the United States? But in that context it's just called the American Dream, not whoring out a streotype. We may not live in huge houses with TVs and white picket fences and 2.5 kids anymore. But then I don't sit down to an "American Meal" of a Big Mac every night at home either. I leave it up to the space monkeys out there to come up with the many easily available examples. They are too cliché to list here. Any thoughts on this? Flames, mindless support and actual thoughtful replies are equally requested.

Hello All!!! My name is Jonathon and I am a huge science fiction fan and self-identified Browncoat. I have been a science fiction fan as far back as I can remember and I can honestly say that Firefly was the best written sci fi show I have ever seen. Everything was fantastic from the character development, the Whedonism type humor, to the engaging plotline. It is truly a great travesty that more people did not recognize the sheer brilliance and genre significance that Firefly embodied while it was still on the air. It is encouraging however that there is a band rebels out there in the black willing to keep the spirit alive. Besides being an avid Firefly fan, I am also a graduate student working on a Masters degree. Coincidentally, I am writing my thesis on fandom cultures and I figured why not combine my two interests. I’ve decided to write my thesis specifically on Browncoats, Firefly Fans, Flyheads, or any other term we use to identify our fandom of the show/movie. I’m looking at the show and film from a narrative perspective. I’m getting stories from Firefly fans about their fandom experiences; why they like the show, how they became "fans", etc... As some of you know, I'm endevoring to be a writer. To that end I've taken another step in the right direction. I took the Advanced Creative Writing class, again through my local college, and am at the final class. What an eye opening ride it was. I had to write poetry for the first time. Two poems actually, Lyrical and Shakespearean Sonnet. I have to say it was the hardest thing I've ever done, BUT what an effect its had on the way I write descriptions now. Once this is done, I'll be into a year long novel writing course. But I digress. The last class is an open Mic. So this coming Monday, I get to read some of my work to an actual audience. Yikes!!

HOBBLEIT

...Were completely awesome last night. I haven't laughed so much in ages. It was so weird and wacky and utterly hilarious. My favourite parts 1. When nthey killed the Honey Monster with a giant hairdryer. That'll teach it to crimp, lol 2. the "serious" play about the environment. If all environmental documentaries had Noel fielding in a gold skirt with wings then I would probably play a hell of a lot more attention. 3. Julian Barrett's eyebrows in said play. I can't describe how hilarious they looked. 4. Tony Harrison. When is a pink head that looks like balls not be funny? The only downside were the screaming teenage emo freaks constantly squealing at Noel Fielding. Can't they just watch in silence? On the plus side at one point I was about 10 feet away from Noel Fielding. Awesome. TTFN Jennifer -x-

ANGELLEMARCS

I am wanting to finish the story of Cat and Ski and will be in the next month, but I have written a project that my writing coach has asked me to write. It is to put one of your own characters in a television program of your chosing, but one that has not been written of before. So that put Cat out of the picture. Plus my writing coach said it would be cheating even though she loves the Cat story. LOL! Anyway, I chose my other assassin, who is normal or at least normal as far as Cat is concerned. Her name is Angelle Marcs. For those of you who do not know, she is the main character in book I am writing which is yet to be published. Now, her story is a might different than the one in my book, but I wanted to know if anyone out there would like to read it. It involves her getting a ride on Serenity and there is no Ski, since this is a completely different storyline. Let me know if I should post it. Thnks

I actually got a few paragraphs of dialogue typed last night! Whatever is the world coming to?! :smile: Vacation is nice. I'm taking Dec 19- Jan 1 off. Not quite sure what I'll be doing with my silly self, but I'll find something to keep me busy! Dad's back at his own apartment, he's got a new tenant upstairs, and life seems to be getting back on track for people. (Uh oh.. I typed that out loud, didn't I..)
