Thank your higher power that I finally have something I'm actually interested in to occupy my time during the worst class in the history of higher education. Firefly is just so much more entertaining than learning that computers can stare at you as easily (if not more so) as you can stare at a computer. My professor has an accent, slightly spanish I think and his english isn't bad. It's just so hard to listen to for three straight hours. But now I can release the pent up browncoat in me and enjoy my own odd sense of imagination along with those of others. The borders of the land (or space) of Firefly have at last been knocked down. It feels like I'm a dinosaur looking over a dashboard and proclaiming "We shall call it, this land." Alas, if I continue to slack off, this land may quickly become "my grave" in the intellectual world. Curse the sudden but ineveitable betrayal.

Picked up nametags for the Shindig Saturday night at the Bryn Mawr theater. Acme didn't have them but Office Depot did. I even picked up ones with gold trim that almost look brown. :) I found a guy who had once come to one of our second edition D&D games online and convinced him to come as well. He hasn't yet gotten into Firefly or Serenity, but once he hits the movie he might be a new recruit. === Upon further reflection, I actually recall Out of Gas way back from when it was originally aired! I coulda sworn I had never seen it before. I DO remember being at a dinner party at my mom's and my dad was watching Firefly (trying to get away from the hens). I remember getting the whole western theme but was slightly turned off by it. Know how I remember? I turned on the commentary and they mentioned the adrenaline shot. Then BAM, it hit me! I had that same conversation with my father as we watched Firefly! I know, I know, it was a complete Firefly moment, but it kinda warmed the cockles to know that I actually DID see it first time out.

Driving around town today, which is probably a bad idea what with the snow and black ice and all. And of course, my mind turns to Firefly. Actually, it happens alot in my car, 'cause it's a little bit like Serenity. It's... lived-in, well-worn, and held together mostly with tape, baling wire, and love. (Well, not so much the love... and what I wouldn't give for a spunky little mechanic to keep it flyin'... :) Anyways, said this before, but I like to pretend I'm flying a spaceship when I'm driving. Puts me in a Firefly mood and all that... So, doing some "precision" driving, and managing not to fish-tail too much, keeping an eye out for reavers, and my mind wanders, as it does... just wondering what our motley crew is up to. And it hits me... I'm not wondering what they'd be doing if the show hadn't been cancelled, or how neat it would be if it was still running. I'm thinking like "gee I wonder how Simon and River are getting along, and if Kaylee ever managed to convince Mal to splurge for a spare catalyzer. How has Zoe been holding up, and what hijinks is Jayne getting into?" I almost had to stop myself and remember that these aren't real people. Now, I'm not crazy. (Entirely... you can't prove it! :) I can tell fantasy from reality (except for that hazy couple of years some people like to call "college") But they aren't just characters, are they? They are real, living, breathing people. That, I realized is why I can't get the show out of my head lately. We're not talking about a bunch of stereotypical archetypes planted into a spaceship to progress the plot. The plot in Firefly is the characters. It's about what they're going through, not what sort of brilliant scheme they're going to come up with to foil Villian #3's plan. And blah, blah, blah... I can ramble on and on about that stuff, really. Trust me, it happens quite frequently. But there's those more eloquent than I who could put it alot better. (Reading through Finding Serenity ATM, and yeah, some of those essays really sum that aspect up real good.) Point here is: I've lost some good friends and family before, I've dealt with the stages of grief, etc (not looking for sympathy, just statin' a fact. I'm far, far from the only person out there to lose good people, my life ain't really all that bad, and I've been able to move on by this point in my life.) Thing that always struck me with death as odd, though, is the denial phase. Gee, haven't seen so-and-so in awhile, maybe I should give him a call... Oh, yeah, he's dead... ;p All I'm saying is I get the same feelings with our BDH's. Emotionally, I'm not pissed that the show is cancelled so much as the fact that somewhere out there in the cosmos our band of ne'er do well's it out galavanting around the 'verse, having a grand old time and getting into all kinds of misadventures... and I'm missing out on it. That make any kind of sense?

"Finding Serenity" is an interesting read. A wonderful piece of home in a book. Firefly being the home and all. Interesting insight into the show, although I'm pretty shallow when it comes to tv. I likes what I see and that's that. Lots of references to B5 and Star Trek (all of them including the black sheep Enterprise) I'm not very good at analyzing television so it was both thought provoking and educational. I only know to watch and in the case of Firefly love what I see. The book enlightened me upon the art of television. It actually exists! Who knew? Joss Whedon knew :)

Ok... so I went home a while ago and not wanting to be parted with Firefly for more than 24hours I decided to take all the disks home for the weekend. All was fine, shiny even, and then horror of horrors my sister took disk 2 out of disk wallet whilst I was packing and didn't tell me. :pissed: Thus, I returned completely unaware that this heinous crime had been commited. And, oh my did I turn the air blue when I discovered it :censored: But it's OK! I have now been reunited with disk two in all it's shinyness and have been walking round with a big grin... Which leaves me to ask the somewhat disturbing question... Is it wrong to be emotionally dependant on Fictional Characters that will be forever stuck in the middle of No and Where on the road to unanswered questions? I know that there's the real world and then there's the 'verse and i'm well aware that they're very different but should one make me happier than the other? An intersting sidetrack to this thought is that TV and movies are actually adding to life expectancy by cheering people up! Wishful thinking! In the meantime I will happily go back to repeatedly watching the series that brought everyone on this site together and will embrace the title 'browncoat' with pride. I shall also stop rambling because I am well aware that i'm sounding weirder by the minute!

I did watch War Stories with the audio commentary on today. Oh what fun! Alan and Nathan just do a wonderful job on it together. But still, it was not a new episode. There are no new episodes. I keep rewatching the ones which are already there, and I still enjoy them, but it just is not the same thing. It is just never as good as the first time! Oh how I wish I could dicover Firefly again! (Those of you who read the story I posted in the Blue Sun Room a few days ago will now know where the idea came from). I am an addict. I have experienced the coolest kick ever when watching Firefly and now I am out thrill seeking and just want this kick again! So, what was I supposed to do? I went out and bought season one of Angel today. I saw some eps of Angel when they were on German TV a few years back, but never got into it (I did not watch Buffy either). Now I decided that they can't be that bad and two friends who are also great Firefly fans, kept telling me that they are really good. I wanted to buy Buffy originally, but they did not have the first season at the store, so I went for Angel instead. I watched the first six eps already. So, yes, I do like it. It is nowhere near Firefly, but it has all that knight in shining armour saves damsel in distress stuff and I have to admit, I really adore knights in shining armour. It is a surrogate, but it is a satisfying one.
