Whedon's 'Serenity' greenlit
U moves forward on sci-fi spinoff

Universal Pictures has greenlit "Serenity,'' the feature film based on Joss Whedon's Fox TV series "Firefly,'' which was canceled in late 2002 after just 11 episodes.
Deals are in place for Whedon to direct and for the original cast of the TV show to reprise their roles. Pic, budgeted in the mid-eight figures, is skedded for a June start and should be ready for a 2005 release.

After Fox pulled the plug on "Firefly," Whedon struggled to continue the project, speaking with other nets and cablers about the skein, then finally turning to studios about a feature version. U acquired the feature rights from Fox last fall.

Whedon said the pic will be released under the title "Serenity" to give it some distance from the TV version. "It was important that people understand that the movie isn't the series," he said. "The movie is bigger, more epic than anything you can do in a series."

To that end, he said he went out of his way while penning the "Serenity" script to make sure that it is accessible to auds who never tuned into "Firefly."

"You're not going to bring people into a movie if you're explaining all the time what happened before," Whedon said.

Series was a space oater set 500 years in the future, tracking the journeys of the crew aboard the Serenity.

Forthcoming pic is set about six months after the TV show left off, and centers on two passengers on board the ship who attract trouble to the crew.

The studio has closed a deal with Nathan Fillion to return as Capt. Malcolm Reynolds. Other original cast members Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher and Summer Glau are also in place.

Barry Mendel is producing the pic. Chris Buchanan of Mutant Enemy, Whedon's shingle, and Mendel exec Alissa Tager are exec producing. Overseeing the project for U is vice chair Mary Parent.

Truly, I think the cast list was abbreviated for...well...whatever incomprehensible reason one might so abbreviate. Barring sundry pick-ups, Alan should be done with "I, Robot" by then, and Ron's been rather quiescent, career-wise, of late. Serenity's been at loose ends as well, so she should be able to join the party without undue muss!

Let's face it, gentlefolk; it's time for Joss to push that Big Red Button!!!!

I think we all sort of knew this was coming, but still... given the body-blow of the 'Angel' cancellation, I for one was taking nothing for granted. But whaddaya you know? Joss actually got to push the red button.

Could be the case but you would have thought that when joss wrote the script he would have had to include their characters and would also had a good idea as whether they were going to be signing on for the film.

Yup, Maniac, I've got some Paddy's. A dwindling supply, alas. Quick, amusing anecdote: Last year, went to Ireland (FINALLY!). While at JFK (airport), I saw a sale at the Duty-Free, where Paddy's could be got for less than it could reputedly be obtained in Ireland itself (turned out to be so). So I bought two bottles, carted them to Ireland..then brought them back. So, not only yummy, but extremely well-travelled!!

But still, it was a worthy cause (!!!!!), and toasts were tendered for Serenity, for ME, and for all Browncoats everywhere! 3/3/04 is a day to commemorate!!

I have to say that is some pretty good news. Some pretty stupendously amazing news in that kind of ohmygawd sort of wow-ish type hooray-for-the-browncoats type way.

Looking forward to seeing the movie (and I wouldn't mind if I could find my way INTO the movie as well). I justr hope that Alan and Ron are on the cast list. Just can't imagine the movie without the inevitable betryal of dinosaurs, or the always hilarious special hell.

This is just fantastic. Just think, when they start filming, we can have a special section devoted to screen caps made available and all that. 2005 seems far away, and it will probably be towards the Fall, but still, knowing it is on the horizon is a wonderful feeling.

Hey, something I've been wondering about...

Did they tear down the Firefly set after the show got cancelled, or were they able to keep it around? Will they have to rebuild the set for the movie?

Oh, and yay for the movie. Here's hoping that 2004 goes by really really fast.

From what one of the crew posted on the official board back in Jan or Feb of '03, the sets were torn down and tossed out. They did not save anything.

I imagine Joss will want to build new sets anyway in keeping w/ the "bigger, more epic" feel he is looking for w/ the movie.

I'm not too worried about Alan being in the movie, as he's the one who stole the big red button and gave it to Joss in the first place. I don't think anything will stop him from being in the movie. I'm sure Ron'll sign up, too.
