Including almost Mal last night. That would be Neal McDonough, who reportedly was the last contender before Nathan got it.
Patton was already on (after Dollhouse).
Has Lucy Lawless been in Joss work?

Lucy has not been in anything directly produced or written by Joss, but in a "Six Degrees" sort of way they are connected. Steven S. DeKight was the creator and producer of Spartacus, and he worked with Joss on Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse.
Are you saying Neal was up for the part of Mal? I had not heard that before.

Nice intro to the show though. Quite the grab , getting Capt. America's buddies in the flash back scene.

Forgot to mention - nice to see Henry Simmons again. Haven't caught him since NYPD Blue.
And Matthew Glave - normally plays a super jerk, good to join Whedonverse.

I do not have the cites. Thought it was commonly known here.
Could somebody who knows more, or can recall the mention, please expand on this?

From Neal's bio page on IMDb:

According to Nathan Fillion in his appearance on the Nerdist podcast, Neal McDonough was also under consideration for the part of Captain Malcolm Reynolds on Firefly (2002).

How will that happen, when she is dead? Flashbacks won't tie up loose ends.
