In my innocence, I'd figured all the madness was a singular thing, that the War we were in was a one-shot mistake that effing us up temporarily.

Me too. But there was so much turmoil going on in America and the world that any bit of innocence we still had was lost by 1970. All we could do after that was go to college, get a job, get married, and start the whole generational thing over again.

Interesting, because a few years later, in May 1977, Star Wars hit the movie theaters and some of that lost innocence was recaptured. (at least for me).
