Soldiers who were in his unit or have been there actually have said such feelings of disillusion aren't unheard of. But that's kinda part of the military life, one which they ALL freely signed up for,even if they may not have fully understood what it may mean.
In such cases, some say screw the mission, screw the C.O., screw all that rah-rah crap that may have been what brought them there, but at the very least, you're in it for the guys around you. You watch their back, they watch yours, and everyone comes home.
Bergdahl said 'screw you' to his own mates, as well as screw America. he's not even worth a head slap by the great General Patton.
If he's not dishonorably discharged, at the very least, it could get ugly.

Dunno. Who died while men and machines were out looking in the vast emptiness of the ocean , on a wild goose chase, when those resources could have been used otherwise ?
I thought the original question was absurd, and showed a vast disconnect from the reality of what our military, any military would do, in a similar situation.
Leave no man behind. It's sorta been a not so secret motto for a while now. I guess it actually still means something.

I actually think that's pretty fair. People make mistakes where other people die all the time, and this doesn't seem like he premeditated his squadmates dying.
He wanted out of the military and the military was displeased by his quality of service. Dishonorable discharge makes sense to me and works for everyone.

Yanno, the reason prisoners are taken and exchanged has nothing to do with morality, it has to do with encouraging the other guys to do so, cause if we stop.. or say, start grabbing random guys and TORTURING them, and stuff....

As for walking out on a command structure you feel has betrayed you, yeah, let's talk about that... LETS....
See, once upon a long goddamn time ago, some of the folk I worked for got orders to directly support the motherfucking Contras, and some of those folk, being disposable type grunts of dubious political loyalties who knew a little too much about what was really going on (and fuck YOU, LTC North!) were pushed into a little more direct action than we believed should be taken.
And we walked.
Of course, given the nature of that particular fiasco *at the time* (was considered a "conspiracy theory" till it all came out for real) they couldn't very well fry those guys without revealing what was going on, and they couldn't even have em whacked, cause those WERE the guys what did the whacking... so they just pretended it never happened, and put the lot of them on inactive reserve... for all eternity.
Loyalty is a chain that goes in TWO directions, and since there hasn't been ANY coming back down for a long, long time, don't expect me to get any kind of upset when some poor fucked grunt realizes how screwed he is and the shit sandwich which is gonna be his future and says "Fuck This Noise".
Hell, if ENOUGH of em did that we wouldn't be in this mess in the first damn place.
And if you wanna scrub it all right down to the nitty gritty, the orders he was under were illegal in the first fucking place, which means under the UCMJ, if you wanted to get all particular - he ain't the one in the wrong.
Think about THAT, for a lil bit of time, will you ?
