When did you know you were hooked on Firefly?

I watched "Train Job" and couldn't get away from the feeling that something was missing. I didn't know it was the now infamous second pilot at the time. It seemed like there was too much exposition going on (i.e. Book's conversation with Mal as Mal heads up to the engine room). More than Joss Whedon is prone to. I also had a feeling I'd seen the actor playing Mal before, but I couldn't place where.
"Bushwacked" freaked me out a little, but confirmed it was a JW production. Then there was that whole "where have I seen the guy who plays Mal before" conundrum I was stuck in.
"Our Mrs. Reynolds" clinched it. In particular, that moment in the teaser where Saffron says "I'm your wife" and Mal's response is a subliminal buh-wha-huh? using only one blink of his eyes. I still fall into a fit of laughter when I see it.
AND I got the name of the actor playing Mal. I gave up trying to place him by memory, wrote down his name, went online and found out that Nathan Fillion had been the happy-go-lucky Johnny in a previous life on Two Guys and a Girl. You cannot imagine my relief. Little did I realize I was about to have the rug pulled out from under me in short order. It didn't take much. About two episodes later, gorram fox started moving it around the time grid on Fridays in favor of basketball, and I saw the beginning of the end.
That's when I went hunting voraciously online for a Firefly presence. That's how I ended up here, a war-weary veteran, retelling my story to y'all.

When they cut away from the space cruiser to River and Simon clinging to the side of Serenity in Bushwhacked. And then cut to a shot that was farther away, and then another, until both characters were lost in the immensity of the stars and of the ship.That was an amazing sequence! And then the scene vaulted into the stratospere when it cut to River laughing at the stars.

I loved Washe's delivery of that line, I laughed sooo hard. One of my favourite moments ever.

I knew I was hooked when I watched 5 episodes of the DVD back to back just to what Joss would give us in the way of River's storyline. I don't know about you guys, but everytime I see her cry, (for fear or aggrivation), it just kills me. I'm such a sap.
Oh yeah, and when Early says, "That ain't a Shepard", in Objects in Space. I always wind up talking to the screen asking, "How do you know this?!"

Within the first five minutes of viewing, I knew I wanted more. Subsequent viewing in the following weeks cemented my addiction.
I'd call it 'love at first sight', and this is the only time I've felt this deeply about a TV serial entertainment.

I agree completely. While I was watching it, I had a look very similar to Mal when he first saw Serenity...

I was hooked on Firefly from Serenity part 2 when Mal shot that fed. I did not watch the original airings on TV. I was addicted to Angel and couldn't squeeze 2 series (even Joss Whedon series) into my busy schedule. I was actually relieved with the Buffy cancellation. This turned out to be supremely ironic for obvious reasons.
After the Angel cancellation (and my grieving period) I downloaded Firefly from a Buffy site. I watched Serentity 1 & 2 and realized I HAD to own the DVD set. charki

I'm in the UK, my sister in the US clued me in and I found the downloads but they were so low quality and the start of the pilot was so dark I didn't bother watching anything else. But my sister kept urging me to watch so I bought the dvd and loved it all, or course. I watched the whole thing through one weekend and then watched all the commentaries the next weekend.
...So, my family knew I was hooked from the start but I didn't realize it until I had set the theme to play repeatedly on my pc....

After seeing Safe. Can’t pinpoint the exact moment or scene but at the time I was still in the process of getting to know the characters and the episode’s focus on the River/Simon relationship with the flashbacks and all made a few things clearer. I realized I cared about those characters and wanted to know more about them. I think I was somewhat hooked already even before but after Safe there was not doubt; this series was something special. (The music in that episode also helped to realize that fact)
The reason why I wasn’t hooked any sooner is because, well, I saw Firefly in Fox order and Serenity of course hadn’t aired yet and when I tried to watch the previous episodes I managed to fall asleep during most of them.
