Is there anyone who saw the show when it first aired and DIDN'T realize they were in love with it from the engine kicking?

I think there was one person on this thread?

Yeah, I was watching not paying overly much attention(the commercials for it had almost made me not much, and my reception was terrible), but when that happened, I watched the show ever week I could.

I know that, from that moment, that I was watching something special...

over here in the uk they aired it in the proper order with a couple of episodes in a row at the start (although that might have been them showing serenity as two eps, i can't remember). being something of a joss fan at the time i decided to tape it as i wasn't going to be around when it was on. when i started to watch the tape, the way it started in the middle of the battle of serenity valley made me think i'd buggered up setting the video and started from ep2 or something, so stopped prety much instantly. stoopid me.

skip forwards a little while, the dvd set has been released, i'm watching my way through dvd sets of angel and come to accept the ultimate truth, i am a total joss whedon fanboy. so i picked up the dvd set. serenity obviously had a bunch of jossisms that made it enjoyable, but the bit where i realised it was something special was watching the cgi sequence of the reavers chasing serenity in the atmosphere. the way the camera was panning, zooming and focusing. i suddenly realised that i'd never seen anything do effects so realistically. thats what made the difference for me.

When I was catching up on earlier Buffy episodes by reading the transcripts, I kept noticing threads on the website about a show called Firefly. I found the transcripts for the show and read every one. I thought it was great so, I bought the DVD. The rest is history.

For me it was Mal bringing back the medecine at the end of The Train Job. Mal's line about not having a choice.

I get enough self-serving, me-first, to-hell-with-the-victims in real life. I don't need to see it on TV (that's why I'm against Reality TV) I like heroes that're good guys.

There was a seed from "Out of Gas" since I was so worried about Mal...seeing as how I couldn't watch the rest of the episode. That's so wrong X___X.

Anyway, I'm guessing I got hooked by the time I seen Airel and Jaynestown. Ariel made me think "Holy Crap!" and Jaynestown made me love Jayne even more

i actually like that they aren't exactly good guys. they operate in the grey, albeit with a certain moral code which makes them both real and likeable

A little while after "Safe," my brain put together the obvious contrast the writer was drawing between Simon's father refusing to bail him out again, and Mal 'not even liking' the guy, but doing so anyway... that's when the whole thing clicked for me. Same message as Buffy's "Family," but delivered with extra cleverness and wrapped in one of those non-linear plots I love so much.

So of course, you can imagine my response to "Out of Gas."

Like everyone else who watched when the show first aired, I laughed my ass off when Crow gets kicked into the engine, but I was still somewhat on the fence about the show (I could definitely see its potential, but wasn't sure which way it was going to go).

I think "Our Mrs. Reynolds" (which aired 3rd, I think, originally) was the first time I really "got" the show--the conceit and the characters and the story just clicked for me.

Then I loved "Jaynestown," because it turned Jayne from what had been, to me, a pretty one-dimensional character, to... well... Jayne, in all his surprisingly complicated glory.

"Out of Gas," though, was when I really fell head over heels. Sigh. I still adore that episode, on its own merits and because I still remember that moment of, "Wow... damn."

I took a chance and bought the DVD having not seen any episodes so I saw Serenity first.

It grew on me gradually over the first half hour. The story and characters were great and I envied that strawberry.

Then, without warning, Kaylee got shot. That was it - I was watching a masterpiece. It stepped up into a gear I didn't know television had and Joss didn't take his foot off the gas 'til the end.

Over the next eight days I watched the whole series. Twice.
