For me it was just the "look" of he show.
It was such a relief to have sci-fi heroes' who weren't in some antiseptic uniform saluting characterless nonentities, in an antiseptic universe.
That and the fact that chinese was incorporated into the language - that is so clever.
Adam Baldwin too. So chuffed to see him in a TV show.

Yep, kinda same here.
Crow starts on his rant, and here I was rolling my eyes thinking "Oh dear god what a horrible and overused plot device... recurring villan, yep yep, argh..."
And then Mal kicked him into the engine, and I was like WTF ?
But what killed me worse is how they went RIGHT to the next guy!
"This is all the money Niska gave us..."
You BET he was down with the program!
I about died, that was it for me, I was hooked.
(tho I was kinda way hooked in from the teaser already..)

Yep. Same moment. I mean, I liked the show before that. 'Cause, who wouldn't? But, we were watching it taped from that evening because we'd been out. And when Crawl goes *shoop* into the engine, our mouths all fell open. All four of us. And then we rewound. And rewound again. And again. I think we watched it four times in a row. Now I just watch people's faces the first time they see that episode when that scene comes up.

For me, it was in "The Train Job" right at the beginning. Once the brawl moves outside, there's a clip where Zoe throws dirt in a guy's face, and another where Mal kicks a guy in the shin. It was just so practical and unconventional a fight.
And then Serenity comes up over the cliff, and Wash says oh-so-deadpan, "Every man there go back inside, or we will blow a new crater in this little moon."
Yep, I was hooked before the fight was over.
...still a little whimsical in the brain pan...

I knew I was hooked when I started melting down the DVD's and injecting them into my eye balls!

Sorry to say, I was unaware of Firefly until it hit the shelf in the store as a DVD. Even then I wondered a week what it really was before I bought it.
I was getting hooked that this would be a good thing from the start..
1 A war 500 years in the future and still using bullets and bombs instead of some fancy laser/phaser stuff. .... good
2 Silence in space ... better
3 Serenity pulling away.. beautiful ship.. getting REAL good
4 Ship passing over the scattering horses .. really really good
5 By the time the cargo was stowed .. seeing the comfort the cast had with the characters and lines... moved to great now
6 Kaylee with new words that make sense.. 'shiny' and her bubbly self .. yep yep.. rubbing hands now.
7 Small touches like the Xmas lights around what I learn later as Kaylees room .. ooo people paying attention to human details.
8 Inara and her ship.. okay this is gonna be a keeper
9 The town of Persephone OK , I give up.. Hooked
The Journey is the worthier part.

The opening theme, with that bluegrassy Bright Sunny South (by AKUS) feel..
Oh yeah, and the hour-minus-commercials that follows ;)

I was determined to watch & tape every episode
(even tho that meant staying up until midnight on the nights it was being pre-empted by a basketball game...)
but it wasn't until 'Jayne's Town' that I realized that this was right up there w/the Buffyverse...humor, excitement, AND metaphor goodness!
But it wasn't until I got the DVDs, watching them all, with the commentary, that I realized that this was Joss' best work.
Something that needed to be continued...
and I searched online to find others who felt the same way.

I'm not really sure when I got hooked. . . probably close to the end of the series. I just kept watching. My aunt and uncle got hooked when I sent them the recorded VHS tapes of the original broadcast. And another uncle of mine got hooked by the third episode (I've loaned my DVD set out to my extended relations, in order to make new converts. . .
).
