Re Pit Bulls in my state
"Councils across Victoria have the right to seize unregistered restricted breed dogs. Where dogs are deemed by the council to meet the Standard, they will be declared as a Restricted Breed Dog and may be subject to euthanasia. Owners have the right to appeal the Council's decision through VCAT."

"And it matters not what "accidental" deaths are ..."
I'm not even going to argue numbers. The problem is that Geezer ASSUMES that the dog-related deaths are accidental. How does he know? Maybe they're 'accidental', maybe the dog/dogs was/were let loose on someone in the hopes of causing injury or death, maybe the dog/dogs was/were trained and commanded to attack - for all we know a person could use dogs to commit suicide.
The point is you can't ASSUME the deaths are accidental and then start using that assumption to parse the numbers.

I've owned a few dogs, and I'd say each has its own personality. Was bitten by a Labrador puppy when I was trying to take the hose it was chewing on our if it's mouth, needed stitches. This one was generally playful and friendly, but dogs are taught not to bite by mom, who nips them back if they bite too hard.
Was bitten by a neighbor's 25 lb aggressive dog when I tried to move him out of the way so I could open our front door. (He was lusting after our female in heat) Turns out he has bitten one of his owners a couple of times before, when HE was reaching for the dog. But at one point little (unleashed) dog attacked a bigger (leashed) dog (German shepherd type) and the bigger dog picked him up by the throat and shook him. Died of blood loss. Little dog too aggressive for his own good.
Supposedly Cane Corsos are illegal in some cities but I see plenty of them in the neighborhood, as well as Dobermans, and .. no, this is not a gang neighborhood.
We now have a terrier/ Chihuahua mix, and I do see the very strong prey drive in her. She loves to play tug of war and bite hard on chew toys, but if she accidentally scratches or nips and I yelp, her head and tail go down and she very apologetically licks me to let me know she's sorry, and to make sure we're still friends, bc her pack behavior is also very strong.
We had a Samoyed from the pound, where we get all of our dogs. She was a sweet dog, very attached to me, but she got dotty in her old age and started to bite without warning.
I guess, point is, all kinds of dogs bite for all kinds of reasons. Some just have bad personalities, but ANY dog is capable of biting so any dog bigger than about 40 lbs can do a lot of damage.

I love dogs. I need to figure out my situation and either finish fixing up this house and get a good gate installed or eventually move into something smaller where I don't have to worry about so many things and I could give a good life to a dog.
A while back I was at my buddy's place and they got a new dog after their old dog Dex died. He was a good boy.
The new dog was really excited when I came into the house, as most young dogs are, and it immediately tried getting up on my leg and humping it.
Uh-uh, little one. When I'm in the house, I'm the Alpha.
I quickly got the dog down, got behind it and simulated doggy style right there in front of my friend and his wife while we're all laughing. The rest of the night while I was there, that dog sat silently at my feet whether I was petting it or not and never tried it again.
I also never allow a dog to lead me into the house. If it tries, I push it back. If it tries again, I push it back. Until it learns that the Alpha leads the way back into the house, it's not coming back inside.
Same with food. You can bark all you like while I'm eating, but you're not getting a scrap until I'm done eating. You eat after the Alpha is done eating. Eventually they learn this and they stop barking while you eat. They will sit or lie down by you at the kitchen table silently, because they know what happens after you're finished eating if they behave themselves.
The dogs remember this too. I watch dogs walk all over my friends and shit and piss everywhere and they can't seem to figure it out. But just like when I was a kid and my Grandpa would come over and our horribly trained dog would be on his best behavior, that's what happens when I come back and see the dog the next time. My friends think it's magic, but it's not.
If you're going to act like a bitch around your dogs, they're going to treat you like a bitch and take over the Alpha role. But the dog doesn't want to be the Alpha. That's a stressful position. Especially when we're talking cross-species, which they weren't designed biologically to be the Alpha for, and the weird and confusing dynamic this plays on the simple dog's mind where the Beta Bitch humans are the ones in control of things that it needs to survive, like the food that it can't hunt because it's trapped indoors with the Betas who control the food behind all the doors that it can't open, or the water in their bowls because they don't know what a water faucet is and can't operate it. Taking over the Alpha role while also not being able to do any of the Alpha things it would be doing in the wild is extremely stressful for the dog can literally break the dog's brain and make them yap and be on edge all of the time, making them much more likely to bite people.

5 Million dog bites per year just means 5 Million people who own dogs that shouldn't own dogs.

The so-called "dog whisperer" has been sued for mistreating dogs and for keeping a pet dog that attacked a person, leaving serious injuries, and that killed another dog.
He may have great insight into most dogs, but some dogs are just crazy, or - in my dog's case - demented.

I'm just wondering what woman he jilted that decided she'd do whatever she could to ruin his life by making up a bunch of bullshit and knowing good and goddamned well she'd get away with it, because that's the culture we've been living in for the last 12 years until January.

Hey, some dogs are crazy, like some people are crazy. I can see they each have their own personalities, just like cats (believe it or not) have their own personalities and people - tho more complicated - have THEIR personalities.
But, be that as it may... maybe you can answer this question: Assuming that the concept of "alpha dog" is valid, and a human "alpha dog" is established in a household, what about OTHER family members and dogs? Is there a hierarchy? Alpha dog, beta dog, and so forth? And if so, how is that established?

Yup. Although it's the system that allowed it for so long that's really to blame. We're fixing that now.

Cats are a different beast altogether. If you get a dog, you're the master. If you get a cat, the cat is the master.
I hate cats.Sure. Dogs have personalities. But they're pretty dumb. You lay the ground rules and stick to them and let the dog know what they are by a proper regimen of carrot and stick, they'll do right. The only possible exception I could see to this is if you took in a stray or a rescue dog that was involved in something horrific like pit fighting. At that point, they might not really be dogs anymore with all that PTSD swimming around in their heads. I couldn't say for sure myself since as far as I know I've never been around a dog that was involved in something like that. If given the opportunity I would like to try fixing a dog like this though.

Ideally, you establish that the dog is below all humans. If the humans in your house are trained right, that will happen automatically.
Not really different than the example I gave above. My buddy and his wife have had 4 dogs since I started hanging out with them again around almost a decade ago now, usually 2 at one time. The Beta of the two dogs always seems well behaved according to them, but the other dog is always a problem. It's easy to see why because they both let the dogs into the house first every single time they let the dogs back in, and they'll feed the dogs food off their plates while they're eating.
I keep pointing those things out to them but they never learn. That's why when I come over it behaves, but even when I'm there it still shows its Humans very little respect. If I'm letting it back in the house, it waits for me to go in first, but 30 minutes later my friend will let it in and it runs right in ahead of him.
These are just little things that most people don't notice or think about, but it's virtually the entire world to the dog.
It's great to love your dog and even think of it as a friend or a member of the family, but you don't treat it like a human member of your family or you're going to get walked all over by the dog, and the dog will resent you for putting it in the position of being the stressed out Alpha in an environment not at all suitable for a dog to be the pack leader in the first place. Especially if you're the type of person who also lets the human members of the family run roughshod over you too.
And I'm not saying be mean to the dog, or to not show it affection or anything like that either... There's plenty of times where you can just chill with your dog, like when you're lounging on your couch and watching Netflix or listening to music or just hanging out with friends and family while lounging around and chatting. I love being at friends or family's houses when they have dogs and we watch a movie or something and I'll have 1 or 2 or even 3 dogs just sitting or laying around me, trying to almost fight each other for the petting until they all settle in and just chill out. Then I just absentmindedly take turns petting them for a while while the movie rolls or while I'm BSing with the other Humans. I think the dogs love it even more than I do too. That's the feeling of
