What we have here are simpletons who can't debate issues, so they accuse others of being all sorts of vile and ugly things.
That sort of nonsense wouldn't be tolerated on most boards.
...Have you SEEN the internet? This place is downright tame in comparison to most other boards.
I mean holy shit man, I was receiving death threats by email and sexual harrassment on other boards by the time I was twelve. Fireflyfans is on the warm and fuzzy end of the spectrum, trust me.

Finally. This has been the longest fracking 'goodbye' thread ever.
Here's my take, since I've been here for about ten years. I was here during the Iraq debate, the 2004 election debate, the Katrina debate, the Iraq debate, the Afgan debate, the Olympic debate, the stock market debate, the housing debate, the Iraq debate, the 2006 election debate, the Nazi-Queen Death Squad debate, the 'why FOX sucks' debate, the debate debate, the 'stop being mean' debate, the 'I'm not being mean' debate, the 'I'm leaving cause your all mean' debate, the Iraq debate, the dead soldiers debate, the bad cops debate, the good cops debate, the 'shot my face' debate, the Housing debate, the bailout debate, the Iraq debate, the other bailout debate, the 2008 election debate, the 'where was he born' debate, the gun debate, the Afgan debate, the Iraq debate, the movie debate, healthcare debate, the Tea Party party debate, the Glenn Beck debate, the terrorist trials debate, the Occupy sing-along debate, the Iraq debate, the 2010 election debate...etc, and so forth.
People come and go. The quality of the discussions waxes and wanes. PN is always an idiot who thinks the Queen is a Nazi and uses contrails and the Tennessee Highway Patrol to kill people. People will say mean things. People will say smart things. People will come and people will go. With the exception of PirateNews, nobody here has a gun to their head forcing them to participate. Part of free speech is the right to not speak or to come and go as you please.
This is a forum to discuss the issues of the day with people who don't always agree with you and are not always nice about it (kinda like Congress only without the ability to spend money we don't have on programs we don't need).
If that's something you want, come on in...otherwise, have a nice day.

Hero...must be right on all of this. ALL of the rest of us are wrong. Chrisisall, 2012

Usually I leave in a snit and then come back like a week later. My current record is two entire months.
I've made threads where I've said I wouldn't be posting as much but then pretty much don't keep to that.
However, I don't make leaving threads. I don't fully understand drawing attention to yourself right when you decide you want to leave, as it gives you a reason to come back and check the responses. Then the leaving thing doesn't actually stick.
I guess it gives people a chance to air grievances if they want to, but that also is not something I understand. It's not like you can really get the last word in unless no one even responds to your post (SAD) and it's not like they're going to change how they act based on something you said before leaving. And posting a long insulting rant at people will just cause them to remember you negatively - especially pointless if the rant is about something like being temp-banned by a mod, as that's basically shooting yourself in the foot and giving credit to the mod's action banning you.

LOL! Longest indeed. Longer than a list of Zsa Zsa's husbands. Longer than a Charo episode of Love Boat. Even longer than the announcement of Generalissimo Francisco Franco's death.

I've been here during most of that, since 2006. It was usually a bloodbath back then between liberals and conservatives, and there were lots of people posting regularly. That's all mostly gone away now.

Nah, it's not generational. I've seen forty-year-olds be total drama queens dropping the leaving threads every which way. Whereas I'm a young millenial who thinks facebook and other social networking programs are self-indulgent.
Still don't understand leaving threads - if you care enough about someone that they might worry about you, then you probably already have their email.

You jerkwads (meaning Hero and Jong, not Byte, who is not being a jerk about it) may note that this was not a goodbye thread, nor was it started by Niki. It was started by someone who likes her and missed her, as many of us do, and wanted to hear what she's up to. So she told us, and kept replying when we kept talking to her.
The actual point of the thread is quite clear by the title. Duh! If you are not interested in knowing where Niki is, don't read the thread. Certainly, don't read the thread then waste your precious time writing posts to bitch about it.
As for Rap whining about the poor quality of unmoderated posts: that is waaaaay too funny! You know, there was a poster on the original fivethirtyeight who I swear was the Rap with a different name. He went on about all the same crap in the same way - the Right must always right, liberals must always be wrong, and all because he said so with no evidence and would someone please please please fight with him over it so he could feel important? Then the blog got picked up by the New York Times, which means it got moderated. This schmoe almost completely disappeared for a long time. Now a few occasional posts get through with a whole different and suddenly more mature and logical tone. So I know it wasn't Rappy, because there's been no such growth here!
Not that I want this site moderated, on a post by post basis. But some posters earn special treatment - like Kaneman, who got who an "offensive" tag or whatever it was. And I remember when some teenager started posting stupid pictures and generally trolling. Haken shut out the IP (and I think notified the parents or something?). I think PN earns some special treatment when he starts a ton of trashy useless threads all at once and clogs up the board.

I am disappointed whenever someone is called a jerkwad and I am not included. I must not be trying hard enough.
As a side note:
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/JustForFun/TheGrandListOfForumAn
dCommunityLaws
"Inherent Savagery Postulate:
When a previously unregulated community starts enforcing positive posts, this means it has begun its decline. If it elects to enforce negativity instead, it can burn like a merry hell-pit for years on end."
So I don't want mods here... Unless they're troll mods.
I suspect no one else actually wants mods either, because... That doesn't make sense to me? And who'd even WANT to do that here? What an awful chore.

Piz, I subvert that simply by talking to people online the exact same way I would were I in the room with them in person, only they can't throw stuff at me save metaphorically...
And I ain't much for social courtesies simply cause I have never considered myself part of any society, and tend to view people as individuals rather than a collective, save when they self-identify with a collective even over their own sentience, at which part I kinda stop considering them people at all.
Hell, I just recently had prettymuch the same kind of hard break over personal values with someone offline who I've known for twenty and some years, and it went just the same in person, really.
I won't say it don't bother me, but it bugs me a hell of a lot less than trying to find tolerance for things I find intolerable, in the case above that being racism.

we observe simple courtesies more often even though they don't seem to apply in forums, "You said goodbye? Why? Weird."
If something's going on with me and I'll be AFK a while, I send emails to people who might actually care.
Imagine me posting the same "I'm going for a drive and I might DIE, hope to hear from you again soon" emails I always send out to my internet friends on a message board like this one. I mean people already think I'm an attention whore, you want it to be that much worse?
...Actually maybe I should totally post those messages here. Maybe I can start a thing where the accepted response back is "hope the paramedics are on standby" or maybe a cheerful "burn in hell!"
